Re: News from Austria
The more I read about NGOs, the more I understand why Russia and others have kicked so many of them out, LL. They're actually working AGAINST the interests of indigenous Austrians....
As for:
Austrian police said construction work started Tuesday on concrete foundations for a planned control area off the northbound motorway at the Brenner pass in the Alps.
"If these plans should materialise then we will have to look at them very seriously. The Brenner pass is essential for freedom of movement within the European Union," Bertaud said.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people? Their much-vaunted 'freedom of movement' was intended to benefit Europeans, not the criminal dregs of the Middle East.
The EU cannot have Merkel's mass migration and freedom of movement, the two are incompatibke.

Re: News from Austria
“We were promised something different before we came”, is the sentiment often heard by Taucher from some asylum seekers living in Austrian refugee centres, according to the Kurier.
What, didn't they get enough free stuff?

I hope that when they return, they take their frustration out on those who sent them to Europe.

Re: News from Austria
Austria's far-right Freedom Party candidate has come top in the first round of presidential elections, preliminary results show.
Norbert Hofer has about 36% of the votes for the mostly ceremonial role - not enough to avoid a run-off in May.
He is likely to face Alexander Van der Bellen, an independent contender backed by the Greens, who is polling 20%.
For the first time since World War Two, the candidates from Austria's two main parties did not make it to the run-off.
Another triumph for Merkel, LL?
Do you know, if it hadn't been for her behaviour, I would probably have simply abstained from the UK referendum, as I didn't have any strong views one way or another.

Re: News from Austria
Nothing to do with Merkel - she has no effect on what Austria does or says. LL

Re: News from Austria
The arrivals have prompted Austria to announce plans to reinstate border controls -- including a 370-metre (1,200-foot) fence -- at the Brenner pass in the Alps, a key transport corridor between northern and southern Europe.
The move has sparked protests at the checkpoint in recent weeks and sparked tensions between Vienna and Rome.
I don't blame Austria one bit, if Italy is stuck with them, well, it is Italy's own fault for not either refusing them entry to begin with or keeping them in proper camps. Italy can always send them to stay with the Pope. He's got lots of money and space.

Not a happy story, LL - I should think a good few people wish the clock could be turned back five or six years, and foolish decisions un-made.

Re: News from Austria
Oh, that's a classic, LL, love it.
But as for this:
City transport bosses failed to see the funny side, however, with spokesperson Daniel Amann telling Krone newspaper: “We find it not at all funny, it is dangerous and forbidden.”
What, exactly, does he think a length of wood, lying on the floor, is going to do that is 'dangerous'? Or is being fun dangerous enough to bureaucrats?

Re: News from Austria
It is considered dangerous for people ascending into the tram, who maybe don't look down and might trip over the very long wooden pole. There are very strict rules about what may be carried on the trams; bicycles, for instance have to stay in the area where the doors are, wheelchairs and prams have special areas where they do not impede other passengers. Austria shooting: Gunman opens fire at concert
http://www.smh.com.au/world/austria-shooting-multiple-people-killed-after-gunman-opens-fire-at-concert-20160522-gp0zw7.html
A gunman has shot and killed multiple people at an outdoor concert in western Austria.
Austrian police said the man fired shots into a crowd, killing two people and injuring 11 others. He then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself.
The shooting occurred near Nenzing in far-western Austria, about 40km east of the border with Liechtenstein.
Police say the overnight shooting was preceded by a loud argument between the gunman and a woman in a nearby parking lot.
They said the man then fetched a gun from his car, left the parking lot, went to the concert venue and started shooting, apparently at random.
Local media quoted rescue workers as saying some of the surviving victims were in serious condition.
Police spokeswoman Susanne Dilp described their wounds as "very diverse".
State broadcaster ORF said the shooting occurred on property used by a motorcycle club.
