Shots have been fired at a shopping centre in the German city of Munich, according to local police.

German media is reporting that there have been multiple deaths following the shooting at the Olympia-Einkaufszentrum (OEZ) - Bavaria's largest shopping centre.

There are currently no details on who was responsible for the shooting.

Footage from the scene appeared to show people running away to seek shelter - and there are local reports that helicopters are circling overhead.

A witness live-streaming from the mall said: "(The gunman) ran into the underground station. Police are looking for him. I don't have a description of the shooter.

"I don't know how many are dead - some people say it's about 15 people."

Munich Police says a "large police operation" is under way and a wide area around the complex has been cordoned off.

An official at the shopping centre said: "We are experiencing a problem."

The social media reports of casualties may be wrong, they often are in the early chaos - I hope so.

According to Sky, police have confirmed there have been multiple deaths.

Oh my goodness.

It seems there is something going on at one of the Metro stations now...

So, the police are now saying three gunmen are involved.

Unbelievable. Madness everywhere and growing..

It's a very confusing picture, isn't it? There have been images on Sky of one gunman, using a handgun, but there appear to be others on the loose...

On top of that, there's been a heated discussion going on elsewhere on twitter about a supposed exchange between the supposed gunman, standing on a roof, and some locals; the gunman supposedly insisted he was 'born in Germany' to which the onlookers, who seemed to be in a flat above it, said something along the lines of, No, you're a Turk.

All of which is probably total nonsense, in all this chaos.

Now it's being claimed that at least one gunman has shot himself.

Thanks, LL - as you know, I don't speak a word of German, so am going by what the translators are saying on Sky.

Usually, twitter is worth its weight in gold in unfolding crises, but on this occasion, some obvious nonsense is being rehashed and repeated on it. It's in danger of turning into an argument over whether this latest horror was carried out by neo-nazis commemorating Breivik's killing spree five years ago, or islamists doing it because that's what they do.....

It's not a pretty sight.
