Did she ever actually stop thinking like someone who thrived in East Germany? She's certainly done nothing of benefit to Western Europe.

Requests in Germany for self-defense weapons permits are hitting record highs in 2016, police data reveals. Firearms ownership experts say people wanting to purchase non-lethal weapons come from all sections of society, “be it workers or professors.”
The new police data shows that Germans are feeling increasingly unsafe in the wake of recent lone-wolf attacks and shootings, which has sparked a demand for non-lethal self-defense weapons.

“As of June 2016, there were 402,301 small arms carry permits in the National Weapons Register,” the Interior Ministry said, as cited by Die Welt.

This figure is almost 50 percent higher than last year when there were just fewer than 270,000 requests for permits in the first half of 2015.

Small arms carry permits or “Kleiner Waffenschein” in German, are restricted to non-lethal self-defense weapons, such as blank-firing and gas pistols, and flare guns.

But in a country with one of the strictest weapons laws in Europe, such permits are much easier to obtain, as they do not require background checks, safety classes, psychiatric evaluation and proficiency tests, which are mandatory for obtaining a firearms license.

A person wishing to get a license only needs to be of legal age, trustworthy and a law-abiding citizen. However, they are not allowed to take the self-defense weapons to public events, which is the same rule for those with full firearms permits.

“Customers are coming from all sections of the society, be it ordinary workers or professors,” Ingo Meinhard, the managing director of the German Gunsmiths and Arms Dealers Association (VDB), told Die Welt.

However, he warned that other self-defense products, such as pepper spray, should only be sold in specialized shops, as “professional advice” is always needed....etc.

Two female police officers have been wounded in Belgium by a man wielding a machete who shouted "Allahu Akbar".

The man was shot after the attack in Charleroi and was later confirmed to have died from his injuries, the city's police said in a tweet.

Sky's Mark White said one of the officers suffered moderate injuries to her face and the other was less severely wounded.

He said: "This was an attack that unfolded at 4pm local time in Belgium outside the police station.

"Two police officers were attacked according to police officials by a man wielding a machete.

"A third officer, who was there at the police station, opened fire on the attacker.

"Now, there are local reports, this hasn't come from police sources, but local reports suggesting that the attacker as he set about attacking those two police officers was heard to shout 'Allahu Akbar', the Arabic phrase for God is great.

"But that at this stage hasn't been confirmed by police, but it is being widely reported by media sources in and around the city of Charleroi."

White said that officers are working on the theory that it is terrorist related.

The Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said in a tweet in French: "I strongly condemn the attack in Charleroi. Thoughts are with the victims, their relatives and with the police. We will follow the situation closely."

Belgium's interior minister has said on Twitter that OCAM (the country's anti-terror group) is investigating the attack.

A Charleroi police tweet confirmed the death of the attacker. It said: "We confirm the death of the machete attacker. Our two colleagues are out of danger. Thank you for the good wishes."

The attack comes months after a deadly attack in which 35 people were killed in a suicide bombing on Brussels main airport and a local Metro station in the Belgian capital.

Six people have been injured after a man set a train carriage on fire in Switzerland and stabbed several passengers, police say.

The alleged attacker, who is a Swiss citizen, was also injured when the train was set alight as it travelled in the far east of the country along the border with Liechtenstein.

A six-year-old child is among those who were hurt as the train travelled between Buchs and Sennwald at 2.20pm local time (1.20pm UK time).

In a statement, St Gallen Police added: "According to current information a 27-year-old Swiss man poured out a flammable liquid. He was also armed with at least one knife. The liquid caught fire."
