Brexit: Jean Claude Juncker takes swipe at UK stating 'English is losing importance' amid ongoing row with Theresa May
Relations between Britain and the EU are tense after Ms May claimed Commission officials tried to influence the UK election.
Jean Claude Juncker has taken a swipe at London by stating that "English is losing importance" amid an ongoing Brexit row with Theresa May.
The European Commission President made the comments as he prepared to give a speech, which he said would be better given in French instead.
He said: "Slowly but surely, English is losing importance."
It is the latest blow in an intensifying war of words between the EU and the UK, with Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon saying on Friday morning that Brexit talks would be easier if Commission officials kept their views to themselves.
The row first burst into the open when Ms May sensationally accused EU officials and politicians of trying to swing the UK election, after details of a private meeting she had with Mr Juncker were leaked to the German press.
Discussing the furore, Sir Michael said: “It would certainly be easier if Commission officials kept their views to themselves and not further complicate what is already going to be a tough negotiation."
Ms May said on Wednesday that figures in the EU tried to influence the result of Britain’s election by leaking the content of discussions to the media, including claims that Mr Juncker believed Ms May to be “deluding herself” over Brexit.
She said the leaks to the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper were malicious, after the resulting stories gave her British political rivals ammunition in the on-going election campaign. More at link.

Frankly, he should sacked - for being drunk at work, if nothing else. This endless stream of abuse from him and one or two others is HELPING Mrs May - does he imagine that continually insulting British people is winning him admirers here? Converting anyone to the EU cause?

I'm sorry to say that the man is an embarrassment - and I say that as a committed europhile.
Frankly Tusk and Bernier are not much better.
But the reality is that all this is just dancing round the handbags - the real negotiating will e done by progressional civil servants on both sides behind closed doors in committee rooms.

As always, Jean-Pierre. But it's Juncker's awful behaviour that keeps making headlines, and it's doing nothing for the image of the EU.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is angry with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for allowing details of a tense dinner with the British Prime Minister Theresa May to come to light, Der Spiegel reported Saturday.
Juncker’s confrontational April 26 dinner with May on Brexit, reports of which have since been aired in the press, triggered a rapid deterioration in relations between London and Brussels this week, with May accusing Brussels of leaking the details to influence the U.K. elections.
I just don't believe Juncker would be able to remember what happened at a dinner.....

Re: Brexit: Jean Claude Juncker takes swipe at UK stating 'English is losing importance' amid ongoing row with Theresa May
I can't criticise anyone who was conscripted by the nazis - they didn't have any choice, they only wanted to somehow survive. But actively, voluntarily collaborating, as his father-in-law did - that's another matter.
I find it ironic that, far from binding Europe together, the behaviour of Juncker and some others is actually helping tear it apart. They also seem to forget that the EU is NOT Europe, and that many see it as an out of control monster, dominated by Germany, where the rich get richer and the poor get trampled down.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/09/jean-claude-juncker-admits-leak-downing-street-dinner-theresa/
Jean-Claude Juncker has admitted that the leak of his discussions with Theresa May during a Downing Street dinner was a "serious mistake".
The President of the European Commission insisted he was not responsible for the scathing account of his meeting with Mrs May, which was leaked to a Germany newspaper.
The Prime Minister subsequently accused the EU of trying to interfere in the General Election and “run over us” in Brexit talks.
The Prime Minister accused European politicians and officials of plotting to “deliberately affect” the result of next month’s poll by issuing “threats” against Britain....etc.
Drunken imbecile. I wonder, has it dawned on him how much he INCREASED support for Mrs May and Brexit? The UK isn't Greece, and considerably harder to bully and threaten.

Re: Brexit: Jean Claude Juncker takes swipe at UK stating 'English is losing importance' amid ongoing row with Theresa May
Romania delivers demand: Give our nationals British citizenship or NO Brexit deal.
The Romanian minister delegate for European Affairs has threatened to block Brexit talks until Britain agrees to give Romanian residents of the UK citizenship in the country.
Ana Birchall, who is the Romanian minister delegate for European Affairs, said that the rights of Romanians in Britain as well as the EU bill are the two biggest obstacles to Brexit.
She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning that the country will not start talks on Brexit until Theresa May agrees to give Romanian migrants British citizenship.
The warning means up to 220,000 Romanians who are legal residents in the UK could be given full rights as a British citizens.
This comes as EU leaders meet in Brussels to agree on the negotiating guidelines for the future Brexit talks.
Romania is expected to play a key role in the upcoming Brexit talks.
The Eastern European country is set to hold the presidency of the EU Council between January and June 2019 - when Brexit is due to be completed.
Mrs Birchall said preparations for the presidency role were well underway in her country.
John Humphrys asked whether her Brexit priorities were to have "Romanian citizens gain citizenship of this country if they have lived here for 4-5 years?"
She told the BBC: "For Romania it is very important to fully protect the rights and interests of Romanian citizens in the UK.
"Not just for one year or two but long-term.
"We are not talking about numbers here, we are talking about people’s lives, their future, their hopes."
Mrs Birchall also warned that Britain has to pay up its financial commitments to the EU before exit talks can start.
Mrs Birchall dismissed questions on whether the EU would be "helpful" in agreeing a free trade deal.
She said: "It's not about being helpful or not. It’s about respecting obligations, and fulfilling financial commitments.
"We will act as an honest broker. We will continue to advocate - to act as one in the negotiations, to have a predictable and orderly withdrawal."

Re: Brexit: Jean Claude Juncker takes swipe at UK stating 'English is losing importance' amid ongoing row with Theresa May
She told the BBC: "For Romania it is very important to fully protect the rights and interests of Romanian citizens in the UK.
How about the rights of British citizens NOT to be pestered and robbed by gangs of Roma? How about their rights NOT to see previously-decent areas turned into sh*tholes by Roma traffickers, importing women as little more than slaves?
I appreciate that not all Romanians are Roma, and not all Roma are Romanian, but I am hard-pressed to think of any group of EU citizens that have done more to increase demands for Brexit.
She's probably more concerned that the flow of money these gangs of criminals send home will be cut off if they are kicked out. They certainly haven't the slightest bit of respect for anyone else's rights.

Re: Brexit: Jean Claude Juncker takes swipe at UK stating 'English is losing importance' amid ongoing row with Theresa May
A perfect example of the problem:
Romanian child sex trafficking gang who lured a 14-year-old girl to the UK before forcing her to have sex with up to 15 men per day and threatening to hurt her family if she refused are jailed
Couple Romelia Florentina Radu and Petre Niculescu lured women to the UK
They promised work in restaurants or shops but forced victims into prostitution
One of them - a 14-year-old girl - was made to have sex with up to 15 men per day
They have been jailed for 14 years each at Kingston Crown Court in Surrey
Another man - George Maracineanu - was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison after persuading a woman to come to the UK

Re: Brexit: Jean Claude Juncker takes swipe at UK stating 'English is losing importance' amid ongoing row with Theresa May
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, pictured, claimed Britain and the United States were no longer reliable allies in Europe as a result of Brexit and the election of president Donald Trump
While Germany and Europe would strive to remain on good terms with America and Britain, 'we have to fight for our own destiny', Merkel went on.

Didn't a previous German chancellor make remarks like that? Seventy or eighty years ago? Didn't end too well?
