Madeleine has to be dead so they can hate her parents. I don't know why they hate her parents, but they are forever trying to put down Kate and Gerry, so it must be something to do with Class and Success, of which most of the Forkers appear to have neither.

Obviously The Abductor is lurking somewhere on these Cess Pits, which is why we aren't going to get anything much out of Scotland Yard.
