This is crazy stuff, though. Why tell a lie like that - yet another convoluted one which involves his mother - over something so trivial?

I know there is a word for that sort of compulsion, that need to rewrite even the most trivial things to make yourself look like some kind of hero, but to onlookers it just appears as utter madness.

I still get a bit steaming mad, Bonny. Especially when the likes of Bennett try to twist things for people who genuinely don't know what has gone on.
