If the crime of taking children isn't bad enough, only 3 have been returned to their parents? What the hell is that?

It says that many of these children have effectively been "borrowed" for criminal purposes from other members of the 15 adults families. I suspect that the real parents are no longer in Portugal or if they are there are very reluctant to come forward because they will be questioned as to why they allowed their children to be used in this way.

There is in the article though an indication that only some of these 27 belong to relatives. Where did the others come from I wonder?

It's impossible to grasp the scale of the problem, isn't it, and being PC isn't helping the children, and others, caught up in this one bit.

Understandably, because of past persecution of Roma, especially by the Nazis, many are reluctant to speak out about these practises, but it really isn't helping. All it's achieving, IMO, is creating a Europe-wide criminal underclass, which is getting all gypsies and travellers tarred with the same brush.

Good that she was indeed with her parents - but shouldn't she have been attending school in the first place?

Glad it's sorted out.

Well, that one is, for now, though I doubt if it would have happened in the first place if the child had been attending school, which it appears she hasn't been. And no, I don't think she was being home-schooled, any more than the Greek child was being lovingly smeared with factor 50 sunscreen.

Let's hope the social workers involved try to ensure the child goes to school and learns useful things like reading and writing.

Hope so too, Bonny, and of course she wasn't being home schooled.

Oh good God! How many of these poor children are there, drifting around Europe like human flotsam and jetsam? It annoys me very much that they are slipping through every protective net normal in society, and I don't find it at all acceptable that a seven-year-old child has never been to school.

Many Roma are so marginalised that the kids never go to school.  Illiteracy is rampant, and with nationalism beginning to resurface things are turning nasty.  Actually as many northern Greeks, especially Macedonians are her coloring (Alexander the Great was supposed to have been blond and blue-eyed) she could well be from up there.   Light skinned blonde and blue eyed gypsies are not that rare any more than Arabs with  light skins and grey or blue-grey eyes.   One should, I think, bear in mind that the story of gypsies stealing fair children is very old, as is the one that Jews stole Christian babies and drained them of their blood to make matzo bread.   And to a Roman, a Circassian child was a trophy as it is for some from the Middle East.   LL
