Mick Jagger's fashion designer girlfriend L'Wren Scott has been found dead in her New York City apartment.

A spokesman for Jagger, who is currently on tour in Australia, said the singer was "completely shocked and devastated".

US media reports, citing law enforcement sources, say the death is being investigated as a possible suicide.

Scott, 49, began dating the 70-year-old rocker in 2001.

The Rolling Stones are slated to perform in Perth on Wednesday.

Scott, originally from Utah, had her own fashion label popular with celebrities, and was a fixture on Jagger's arm.

At around 6ft 3in, she towered over her famous boyfriend on the red carpet.

Scott founded her high-end label in 2006 and recently created a more affordable line of clothes with retailer Banana Republic.

She has dressed several stars, including Nicole Kidman, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie.

Just last month Scott cancelled her London Fashion Week show, due to reported production delays.

It looks like she was very deeply in debt. Poor woman, the world must have seemed bleak and hopeless to her.

She must have been suffering for quite a while. She turned down Mick Jagger's offers to help her financially. That will surely leave him feeling bereft?

I should think so, Lily, he's not a young Love God any more, and they have been together a long time. Terrible, when you think how many just declare themselves bankrupt and continue merrily more or less as before.

He will know he could have done it in a blink and that it would only be a dot in his fortune. I do hope that he will come to terms with her death and not blame himself.

Who knows, maybe he will even set up a clothing design educational foundation or something, in her memory.
