The U.S. cleverly outfoxed al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, using air power and local Afghan allies (the Northern Alliance) to destroy the Taliban without many American boots on the ground.

Unfortunately, the years since that was written have shown that someone was outfoxed, and it wasn't the Taliban.

Is it not actually Christianity and Islam that have caused almost all of it, LL? Possibly because of their insistence on converting people, and then fighting amongst themselves about the most ridiculous details in their own faith?

Religion is not, and never has been, of any interest to me. I loathe those missionaries who forced simple men and women to deny their beliefs and worship an alien god. I also fail to understand that if, as is claimed, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are the Religions of the Book, they try and destroy each other with such zeal. LL

WASHINGTON — Just weeks before Blackwater guards fatally shot 17 civilians at Baghdad’s Nisour Square in 2007, the State Department began investigating the security contractor’s operations in Iraq. But the inquiry was abandoned after Blackwater’s top manager there issued a threat: “that he could kill” the government’s chief investigator and “no one could or would do anything about it as we were in Iraq,” according to department reports.

American Embassy officials in Baghdad sided with Blackwater rather than the State Department investigators as a dispute over the probe escalated in August 2007, the previously undisclosed documents show. The officials told the investigators that they had disrupted the embassy’s relationship with the security contractor and ordered them to leave the country, according to the reports.

After returning to Washington, the chief investigator wrote a scathing report to State Department officials documenting misconduct by Blackwater employees and warning that lax oversight of the company, which had a contract worth more than $1 billion to protect American diplomats, had created “an environment full of liability and negligence.”

“The management structures in place to manage and monitor our contracts in Iraq have become subservient to the contractors themselves,” the investigator, Jean C. Richter, wrote in an Aug. 31, 2007, memo to State Department officials. “Blackwater contractors saw themselves as above the law,” he said, adding that the “hands off” management resulted in a situation in which “the contractors, instead of Department officials, are in command and in control.”

His memo and other newly disclosed State Department documents make clear that the department was alerted to serious problems involving Blackwater and its government overseers before the Nisour Square shooting, which outraged Iraqis and deepened resentment over the United States’ presence in the country.

Today, as conflict rages again in Iraq, four Blackwater guards involved in the Nisour Square shooting are on trial in Washington on charges stemming from the episode, the government’s second attempt to prosecute the case in an American court after previous charges against five guards were dismissed in 2009.

CNN) -- Angry protesters forced three buses carrying undocumented immigrants to turn around Tuesday in Southern California.
The immigrants had arrived in San Diego from south Texas and were on their way to be processed at the Murrieta Border Patrol station.
Protesters chanting "USA!" "Impeach Obama!" and "Deport, Deport!" blocked their route. A heated yelling match ensued between the demonstrators and a group of counterprotesters.
As the buses were forced to retreat, the roughly 140 people on board were taken to a border station in San Ysidro, according to Ron Zermeno with the National Border Patrol Council.
It was not immediately clear whether they would stay there or what would happen next.
The U.S. government is struggling to process and accommodate an influx of undocumented immigrants, and specifically a spike in immigrant children. The government doesn't have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.
To help relieve crowded facilities in Texas, undocumented immigrants are now being sent elsewhere to be processed.
Murrieta Police Chief Sean Hadden said that police there had been told to expect 140 immigrants every 72 hours, with the next group scheduled to arrive on Friday.

Authorities estimate 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House has called an "immediate humanitarian crisis."
The mayor of Murrieta, Alan Long, had urged residents Monday to protest the decision to move undocumented immigrants to the area, the Los Angeles Times reported.
He spoke again Tuesday at a Murrieta City Council meeting, thanking police and others.
"Please remember these are human beings that are fleeing the violence in their home countries. The problem is that they need to come into this country the legal way," Long said.

It's just a matter of time before one of these incidents spirals out of control, IMO, Lily. Irate citizens and cops defending the indefensible is always a recipe for disaster. Especially when the easy way to stop the problems is to CLOSE THE DAMNED BORDER.

He doesn't want it closed.  It means loads and loads of future voters for his party.  In the meantime it is at the expense of others.

What the HELL is Obama playing at, Lily? It makes no sense at all. Apart from anything else, it's a terrible slap in the face to all those people who emigrated to the US legally, and jumped through hoops to get Green Cards.

And where are all these 'war-torn regions' in South America supposed to be, anyway? Last time I looked, it was more or less at peace, apart from drug cartels (exporting to the US) and Venezuela (being stirred up by the US).

How are they getting through Mexico? And why are so many of them, well, fat?

There have been adverts for them South of the US. They are even getting escorts to bring them in.

You know, there isn't a great deal of point in the US causing annoyance to ordinary travellers at airports, when the world and it's mother is simply walking over the Mexican border.

Unless Obama thinks there isn't a single person in South America with a grudge against the States?
