Audi says 2.1m of its cars were fitted with emission cheating software, as Volkswagen is said to have suspended the research and development heads of three divisions.

The luxury car brand, which is a subsidiary of Volkswagen, has admitted that millions of its vehicles with so-called EU5 engines have an emissions "defeat device" installed.

Newer cars with EU6 engines aren't said to be affected.

The news comes as reports suggest the R&D chief of Audi, along with those of Volkswagen's core passenger car division and sports car maker Porsche, is reported to have been put on leave.

All three companies have declined to comment

Ankara (AFP) - Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday ruled out creating a processing centre for the thousands of mostly Syrian migrants trying to enter Europe from Turkish territory, calling instead for them to be hosted in "safe zones" inside Syria.

Responding to repeated calls by EU members for migrants' asylum claims to be handled in the countries from which they set sail for Europe, Davutoglu told Hurriyet newspaper: "We have told Europe that there will be no reception centre in Turkey."

EU leaders last week agreed to boost aid for Turkey and other countries neighbouring Syria, which have taken in the bulk of the over four million people fleeing the Syrian civil war and Islamic State extremists.

They also vowed to strengthen the bloc's outer frontiers and create controversial centres in frontline states like Greece and Italy to sort refugees from economic migrants more quickly.

Davutoglu said such centres were "unacceptable" and "inhumane" and repeated Turkey's call for the formation of a safe zone inside Syria stretching from Azaz to Jarablus in the north.

"If Azaz-Jarablus is cleared (of Islamic State extremists), we can establish three cities there each hosting 100 thousand people," said the Turkish premier.

A mass brawl has erupted at a tented camp for migrants in Germany, with Albanians and Pakistanis fighting each other with sticks and irritant sprays.
It took police several hours to quell the violence between some 400 migrants at Calden, near Kassel in central Germany, German media report.
Fourteen people were injured, three of them police officers. It began with an argument in the camp's canteen.
Meanwhile the anti-immigration Freedom Party has surged in polls in Austria.

Asylum claim tension
The violence at Calden, in the German state of Hesse, left some migrants shivering in the cold outside the camp until they could be moved back in late on Sunday.
But one migrant group was moved out to separate accommodation.
It is not yet clear what type of irritant gas was used in the fighting.

The camp is estimated to have 1,500 migrants from 20 countries, including Syria.
Tensions have arisen there and elsewhere over the way asylum claims are handled, as Syrians and Iraqis are usually prioritised for refugee status.
Last month a mass brawl also erupted at a migrant hostel at Suhl in eastern Germany, after an Afghan tore pages out of a Koran.
Several German politicians have argued that different ethnic groups should be housed in separate migrant accommodation.
Migrant hostels have also been targeted by anti-immigration nationalists. Fires have swept through several hostels - often buildings not yet occupied by migrants - in suspected arson attacks.

Migrant influx
Meanwhile, the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) won 30.4% of the vote in Upper Austria, coming second behind the conservative Austrian People's Party (OVP) on 36.4%.
Upper Austria, an industrial region, is Austria's fourth-largest state. The FPO doubled its vote tally compared with the 2009 state election, while the OVP dropped by 10%.
The centre-left Social Democrats (SPO) lost about 6%, finishing third.
At national level Austria has been ruled by conservative-social democrat coalitions since World War Two.
But opinion polls suggest that the migrant crisis has greatly boosted support for the FPO.
This summer Austria has struggled to cope with tens of thousands of non-EU migrants entering from Hungary. Many of them are Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan refugees hoping to get asylum in Germany.
Germany expects at least 800,000 asylum seekers this year - about four times the 2014 figure. It has by far the largest number of claimants in Europe.

The number of attacks and other criminal offences committed against refugee shelters in Germany has more than doubled this year compared to 2014, police said.

Germany expects a record-breaking number of 800,000 new arrivals this year. The unprecedented influx of foreigners has fuelled social tensions and there have been protests and attacks against asylum shelters in some parts of the country.

"In the last few months, the crimes have reached a new level, both in quantity and quality," Sandra Clemens, spokeswoman for the BKA Federal Criminal Police Office, said.

The number of criminal offences against asylum shelters so far this year surged to 437 from around 200 in the whole of 2014, she said, adding that damage to property, graffiti and verbal insults made up the largest part of the offences.

The total for 2015 included 59 crimes classified as violent, a new record high after last year's peak of 28, Clemens said. Of this year's figure, 26 were arson attacks.

Aida Bolevár lived in the Middle East for five years and is fluent in Arabic. At the start of the video, she stresses that she is not trying to make the migrants look bad by telling her story.

Arriving at Keleti railway station in Budapest, Bolevár said she was shocked to see a mass of “filthy” people who refused to let her enter the building and tried to steal her luggage while hurling insults.

After witnessing some of the migrants “without shame, simply defecating where they stood,” Bolevár said some of the women were being beaten by their own husbands.

“All they could think to do in the heat of the moment was to grab the luggage of passersby and shout obscenities (at) them,” said Bolevár, adding that 90% of the migrants were men aged 18-45.

Bolevár says the men “grabbed random children” and tried to use them as human shields in order to board the train, Bedlam then ensued, with windows cracking and fights breaking out as waves of people surged onto the train.

Bolevár was sat near four other people who had purchased tickets for the train.

“They began talking to each other in a relaxed tone, considering whether or not they should rob us, since that would please Allah because we were infidels. As for me, it would really be worth raping me because I am not dressed like a proper woman, I haven’t got a hijab on my head, that is, I’m not Muslim, and so I am bad,” said Bolevár.

BAPSKA, Croatia (AP) — Doctors treated migrant children — including newborns — for exposure as dropping temperatures Monday worsened the plight of asylum-seekers walking for days trying to reach sanctuary in Europe.

They seem to be overlooking the small detail that they were IN 'sanctuary' in Turkey before they decided to march across Europe...

It's fascinating how often Poland falls out with their neighbours about the War, though on this occassion, it's hard to fault them for being annoyed at being blamed for causing it.....

Turkey is correct is saying that there should be safe areas provided for them in Syria. They need money to do that and honestly, it would be cheaper to do that than having to build camp and pay welfare for them in Europe?

Court rules police discriminated against Roma community by failing to curb far-right groups

A Hungarian court ruled for the first time that police discriminated against the Roma (Gypsy) minority in a case flowing from highly-publicized events that took place in the Heves County town of Gyöngyöspata during the spring and summer of 2011, hvg.hu reports.

The Eger Law Court ruled in a lawsuit filed by the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ) in a first degree verdict that the police had violated the right of the Gyöngyöspata Roma community to equal treatment when they had failed to act properly against the far-right paramilitary groups present in the village for weeks, and therefore had failed to protect the intimidated Roma. The court also ruled that the police’s practice of cracking down on minor offences had also been discriminatory, as it unfairly fell on the Roma.

TASZ said it considers the verdict a very important step forward in Hungarian rights protection and law practice, as it is the first time a court ruled that police discriminated against Hungarian Roma in a public interest lawsuit. Besides determining that the law had been violated, the court also obliged the police to publish the verdict on their internet site and also inform the state news agency MTI about it.

It is, IMO, grossly unfair for Hungary to get such stick - whatever his other faults may be, Orban seems to be one of the few European leaders who is doing what he is paid to do - look after his own country, first and foremost.

The EU's migration chief has urged European leaders to stop thinking about whether accepting refugees into their country will affect the next election.
Dimitris Avramopoulos hinted that EU heads of state is letting their worry about how their actions in response to the migration crisis will be seen by voters cloud their humanitarian judgement.
The 62-year-old said EU leaders should think more like the Commission, which does not need to be re-elected and therefore does not take into account how their actions might change public opinion.

Hungary to propose global refugee quotas

Hungary will propose introducing global refugee quotas at the ongoing UN General Assembly session, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said. Such quotas would ensure that global powers who “had a hand” in destabilising regions close to Europe also do their part in sharing the burden of illegal migrants, he said in New York. Szijjártó, who is scheduled to address the 70th UN Global Assembly session on Saturday, said Europe had not faced as many challenges as it does today since the end of the second world war, adding that the migrant crisis is “probably” the most significant problem.“From our perspective it seems like only Europe is exposed to a large migration pressure because it is surrounded by unstable regions, which may lead to 30-35 million people flocking to our borders,” he said.

People living on humanitarian aid number 8 million in Iraq, 12 million in Syria and over 12 million in Sub-Saharan Africa. The official number of Syrian refugees in Turkey is 2 million, with the actual number likely to be as high as 4-5 million, he said. Szijjártó said it would not be fair for Europe to shoulder the burden of migrants alone, as other global powers were also responsible for the decisions that rendered the surrounding regions unstable.
