It won't work in Europe, Lily, as I've said before, Europeans don't need guns to cause chaos - just think of those farmers burning hay bales against the doors of the European Union.

Four-fifths of respondents told pollsters that they were in favour of border controls in a new survey released on Monday.

The poll, conducted by Initiative Markt- und Sozialforschung (Initiative for Market and Social Research) shows a big turnaround in opinion on the migrant crisis in recent weeks.

Well over half - 59 percent - of respondents thought Chancellor Angela Merkel had been wrong to allow Syrian refugees to travel unhindered to Germany from Hungary.

That was a big turnaround from the last poll on the subject, in which 66 percent of people asked said it had been the right decision to let the Syrians in.......etc.

I suspect they'd managed to persuade themselves there was only one trainload for them to fawn over, and wave stupid signs at.

When the 'migrants' kept coming, kept fighting with each other and everyone else, threw babies at the police - and Germans saw what their new chums had been doing on trains - sane Germans went off the whole idea pretty quickly.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Several Eastern European countries are cooperating on controlling the flow of migrants at the external borders of the European Union — a program a top Hungarian official said Tuesday could set an example for the rest of the 28-nation bloc.

Zsolt Nemeth, head of the Hungarian parliament's foreign relations committee, said his country is working jointly with the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia to help protect Hungary's border with Croatia, which is also an external border for the EU's passport-free Schengen travel zone.

"We want to return traffic at the external border to its normal course," Nemeth told The Associated Press in an interview. "We want (migrants) to enter the Schengen zone only at the checkpoints." The Czech Republic on Monday decided to send 25 soldiers to Hungary to help protect its borders with Croatia and was considering sending more troops and police, while Poland's Border Guard sent a helicopter with eight crew members and one liaison officer to Hungary.

On Thursday, the interior ministers of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland will discuss further ways to help Hungary, which has seen over 318,000 people seeking safety arrive this year. The four countries form the so-called Visegrad Group.

Nemeth said Hungary wants to spur the EU into protecting the external borders of Greece, where most of the tens of thousands of migrants reaching Hungary first enter the EU. "If we, the Visegrad Countries, can set an example for Europe, then there is a chance that the EU will follow this example," Nemeth said. "We should defend the Greek border together."

Hungary has built a razor-wire fence on its border with Serbia, which is not in the EU, and is rapidly completing a similar barrier on the Croatian border as well.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary's prime minister lambasted his Croatian counterpart Friday, accusing him of being the envoy of a global left-wing organization with the job of attacking Hungary — some the strongest statements yet in neighborhood disputes caused by the migrant crisis.

Meanwhile, officials in the Czech Republic said they were willing to send more than 100 police and soldiers to help Hungary defend its European Union borders, which could include the border with Croatia. That could create the awkward situation of EU members guarding the borders of a fellow member country with troops.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the parties in the Socialist International, which includes Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic's Social Democratic Party, support migration, think the wave of migrants reaching Europe is a "good thing" and their leaders "are following the orders not so much of their people as of the Socialist International."

Orban said on state radio that "we don't consider what the Croatian prime minister says to be the opinion of the Croatian people." "When they hear the Croatian prime minister, I ask Hungarians not to hear a Croatian man but an envoy of the Socialist International who is supposed to attack Hungary," Orban continued, adding that he had refrained from criticizing Milanovic until now in the interest of the long-term relationship between their countries.

Politicians from the two countries have been trading barbs since Hungary's decision on Sept. 15 to close its border with Serbia with a high fence protected by razor wire, police and soldiers. Hungary's foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, last month called Milanovic's handling of the migrant crisis "pathetic," while Milanovic said Hungary's border fences were a disgrace.

Thousands of migrants a day are streaming into Hungary from Croatia, through which they were forced to detour because of the fence. They are searching for clear paths toward Germany and other destinations in the European Union.

Hungarian officials say they are close to completing a fence on the Croatian border as well. Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said Friday the matter of Czech help with border control in Hungary would be discussed Oct. 8 at a meeting with his counterparts from Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

All four countries in the so-called Visegrad Group, or V4, are in the EU's Schengen zone of passport-free travel. Chovanec said the soldiers could be deployed within two weeks, while the Polish interior ministry said a helicopter and crew from the Polish Border Guard could be sent to help Hungary.

EU member Croatia is not a Schengen country while Serbia is a candidate for EU membership.

German authorities accused of playing down refugee shelter sex crime reports

Germany's police union and women's rights groups accused the authorities on Tuesday of playing down reports of harassment, sexual assault and even rape at refugee shelters because they feared a backlash against asylum seekers.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere called on Germans to avoid succumbing to a blanket suspicion of the hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving in the country, saying an unbelievable number of rumors were being spread on the Internet.

But police union chief Rainer Wendt said he believed that authorities in Germany's federal states, which are responsible for housing asylum seekers, were playing down the problem of assaults on women in the shelters.

"It is understandable that there is the desire to calm things down politically," Wendt told Reuters. But he, along with women's groups, believed that ignoring the problem would be counterproductive. "There is a lot of glossing over going on. But this doesn't represent reality," he said.

With public opinion hardening on the refugee influx, German authorities appear anxious to avoid giving extreme-right groups any opportunity to stir up hostility towards migrants, many of whom are Muslims including those fleeing the Syrian civil war.....more at link.

There has been a rising number of violent incidents in German refugee hostels in recent weeks and concern is growing among officials. But some communities are finding creative ways to make life more tolerable in the asylum homes.

Two men are waiting for their lunch inside a drafty airport hangar -- one is an 80-year-old from Pakistan, the other an 18-year-old Albanian. A throng of people are waiting and the line can take up to an hour, but the young man has run out of patience. He climbs over the barrier and pushes forward, gets his food and then sits down at a table. A short time later, the elderly man addresses him angrily.

A dispute that began banally enough on Sunday, Sept. 27, ended in a mass brawl after the young Albanian hit the old man in the face. A security guard intervened and was able to pull the two apart, but three hours later, 50 to 60 Pakistanis stormed into the hangar and threatened the young Albanian with aluminum rods they had taken from their cots. The police moved in and were initially able to restore peace. Come dinner time, though, 300 angry Albanians had turned up. Some attacked the Pakistanis, benches were thrown, men struck each other with clubs and used pepper spray.
Police estimate that more than 350 of the 1,500 refugees staying in the emergency shelter at the Calden Airport near the city of Kassel became involved in the fight. The incident resulted in 14 injuries, including police officers. Two weeks prior, another altercation at Calden left 60 people injured.

Mounting Tensions

There have been other violent outbreaks at hostels in Ellwangen in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Suhl in Thuringia, Bramsche in Lower Saxony, Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate, Heidenau in Saxony, as well as in Dresden and Leipzig. Indeed, an explosive mood is developing in many of the refugee camps across Germany, most of which have become overcrowded. Police situation reports from across the country describe a growing propensity to violence in the hostels.

In one refugee hostel in the town of Königsbrunn in Bavaria, police claim to have found machetes constructed using bed frames -- "two approximately one-meter-long (three-foot-long) pipes with knives attached to them," as well as a "chair leg whose tip had been shaped into a club and four iron pipes, each about one meter in length."

At the beginning of September, inside a trade fair exhibition hall that had been converted into a refugee hostel in the town of Sinsheim in Baden-Württemberg, 200 to 300 asylum-seekers began fighting. A police report notes that security guards were so frightened after a man accused of participating in the brawl pulled a knife on them that they fled the scene.

In August alone, police in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia were dispatched 926 times to refugee accommodations -- far more frequently than in previous months. Often they are responding to reports of bodily injury, but other times it's as simple as someone having pulled the fire alarm. Rainer Wendt, the head of DPolG, Germany's second-largest police union, says that officials are "facing the greatest challenge in postwar history.".....more at link.

A woman whose family branded her 'unclean' after she was gang-raped in her Syrian homeland has been found murdered in Germany – allegedly on the orders of her own mother.
Police believe the victim, named only as Rokstan M, 20, was stabbed to death by her father and brothers in the twisted logic that she had brought disgrace on her family through the sex attack.
Shortly before she was found dead in an allotment garden in the eastern German city of Dessau, she apparently had a premonition of her fate.
Writing on her WhatsApp profile, she said: 'I am awaiting death. But I am too young to die.'
Rokstan had been living in a house for single women before returning to her family a few days before she was murdered and buried in a shallow grave.
The killing has served to pull into sharp focus the cultural gulf between Germans and the more than one million refugees expected to arrive in the country this year.
