Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
As I've said, I don't like Netenyahu, IMO, he's done the image of Israel an awful lot of damage in the wider world. As well as killing a lot of Palestinians and stealing a lot of land.
BUT - Obama and Soros want him out, and haven't even attempted to hide their scheming, so I am not sure what is really going on here.

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
Of course they do, I have supported them for years, but as long as you have Netanyahu and his ilk in charge the Palestinians will be ground into the dust and the Jews, whether Israeli citizens or not, will be blamed. The Israelis will go up a point in my estimation if they stop listening to mad, evil warmongers and realise that bashing the living daylights out of the Palestinians is not going to make them vanish. Hitler tried that with the Jews and failed totally - as long as one family survives, the whole nation survives. LLlily wrote:Palestine deserves to be given state status, LL.

That is what has never made too much sense to me either. That is also the issue that kept other Arab countries not wanting to deal with them at all, correctly, too.bb1 wrote:lily wrote:Palestine deserves to be given state status, LL.

As nuke talks intensify, WH celebrates Iranian holiday
The White House this week celebrated Nowruz, the Persian New Year most often observed by Iranians.
The festivities come amid tense negotiations between the White House and Tehran. President Obama hopes Iran will slow or stop its nuclear weapons program in exchange for removing economic sanctions.
First Lady Michelle Obama praised the holiday in remarks at the executive mansion Wednesday. The event featured a Persian dinner and a dance troop’s performance.
“I think it’s so fitting we’re holding this celebration here today,” Michelle Obama said. “One of the things I love about the White House is how it truly is the people’s house. It is a house that reflects the diversity of culture and traditions that make us who we are as a country. Nowruz is one of those traditions.”
The U.S. is targeting a tentative outline of the deal by the end of the month.
Britain, France, China, Germany and Russia are aiding America’s efforts, with talks resuming in Lausanne, Switzerland, next week.
A group of 47 GOP Senators revolted against President Obama’s strategy Monday, sending Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, an open letter promising Congress will end any agreement it finds harms American interests.
Obama on Friday said he was “embarrassed” by the lawmaker’s actions. Khamenei, meanwhile, criticized it Thursday as proof of Western “tricks and deceptions” in the negotiations.
The first lady made no mention of Iran in Wednesday’s speech. She did praise the ancient festival as one of “family and community.”
“For more than 3,000 years, families and communities in the Middle East, Asia and all around the world — including here in the United States — have celebrated this holiday to mark the renewal of the Earth in springtime,” she said. “It’s to reflect on the year before and make new commitments to good health and prosperity in the year ahead.”
Nowruz marks the start of both spring and the beginning of the Persian calendar each year.
A central facet of Nowruz celebrations are “Haft Sin,” or “the seven S’s” in Persian. Participants display seven items (all beginning with “S” in Persian) as symbols of new hopes for the next year.
The first lady said Wednesday the White House has its own Haft Sin display this Nowruz. Example she cited included an apple for beauty, grass for rejuvenation and crushed berry spices for “the spice of life.”
============
That must have gone down well in Tel Aviv. Mind you, I don't think Tehran is terribly keen on 'First Ladies' that do hip-bumps with lesbian talk show hosts.
Maybe Tel Aviv and Tehran have more in common than they realise?

Israel election: No clear winner, exit polls suggest
Neither Israel's governing Likud party nor the opposition Zionist Union has a clear lead in Israel's general election, exit polls suggest.
Exit polls by two Israeli broadcasters gave both sides 27 seats each in the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset.
Both would need support from other parties to form a governing coalition.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the vote as a "great victory" for his Likud party, which is credited with a better result than expected.
Likud had trailed the centre-left Zionist Union in opinion polls last week, correspondents say.
However, Zionist Union, headed by Yitzhak Herzog, said that the "spin" from Likud was "premature" and everything was "possible until the real results are in".
Final results are not expected until Wednesday morning.
When results are known, Israel's president will give the task of forming a government to a party leader who he thinks has the strongest chance of assembling a coalition.
Mr Netanyahu could become Israel's longest-serving leader if he secures a fourth term.
No party has ever won an outright majority under Israel's proportional representation voting system.
More than 71% of those eligible voted in the election, which ended at 22:00 local time (20:00 GMT).
Israel's Channel 1 and Channel 10 both projected 27 seats each for Likud and Zionist Union, while Channel 2 gave Likud a one-seat lead, with 28 seats.
The Joint Arab List, an alliance of Israeli Arab-dominated parties, has come third with about 13 seats, exit polls suggest.
It has said, however, that it will not take any positions in government.
========
At least it's a respectable turnout.

LIKUD WINS
God help the Palestinians. Full story at link. LL.... series of hard-line positions that will put him at odds with the international community.
In a dramatic policy reversal, he said he now opposes the creation of a Palestinian state — a key policy goal of the White House and the international community. He also promised to expand construction in Jewish areas of east Jerusalem, the section of the city claimed by the Palestinians as their capital.

A commentator from Jerusalem said that the new government will be hawkish and right wing, and there will be no accommodation with the Palestinians on any views other than those of the new government. Netanyahu played the security card, Iran etc while ignoring the state of the economy and other pressing internal problems. How long before he recommences the destruction of Gaza? LL

Oh Lord, no, I was praying he wouldn't be re-elected. So, more bloodshed and land theft coming?
BTW, I did try to read a bit about the wider background to the election; I hadn't realised his policies have done a pretty fair job of trashing the Israeli economy, along with a lot of the social programmes that had previously been admired.
Just another neocon warmonger, in fact.
I don't see anything good coming out of his victory in the long-term, frankly.

United Arab Party, Expected to Be Third Largest, Will Recommend Herzog for PM
Ironically, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is facing elimination, with some polls showing his party failing to pass the blocking percentage it legislated.
Zionist Camp Chairman Itzhak Herzog will receive the support of the joint Arab party, which has finally decided to recommend him to the President.
Following the elections in Israel, the president meets with the heads of every faction that had made it into parliament, to ask them whom they recommend to take on the task of cobbling a new coalition givernment.
The law does not require that the candidate represent the largest party, he or she only have to have been elected to the Knesset.
Back in October 2010, the Kadima party under Tzipi Livni’s leadership received 28 seats in the elections to become the largest faction in the Knesset. But the right-wing bloc with the religious parties comprised 65 MKs, with the Likud showing with 27 seats. Ten days after the election, President Shimon Peres instructed Benjamin Netanyahu, who had been recommended by those 65 MKs to build the next coalition. Livni and Kadima, with their 28 seats, remained in the opposition.
Some polls predicted that the United Arab List would receive as many as 15 seats this time around, compared with the 11 seats the three partners making up the list had in the last Knesset. The main reason for the forging of this new, larger Arab party, had to do with the new law instituting a blocking percentage on candidates entering the Knesset.
A party has to have 3.8 seats in order to qualify, meaning, in most cases, if you received fewer than 4 seats, you lost all your votes. The three Arab parties had traditionally hovered around the 3-4 seats, and would have been destined to disappear had they not formed their alliance.
Ironically, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, whose Knesset faction passed the new law, is himself facing elimination, with some polls showing his party failing to pass the blocking percentage it legislated.
Itzhak Herzog pointed said this morning that “these elections are a chance to decide between the path of despair and failure of Bibi and the way of change and hope which I will mark as prime minister. I need your vote to be able to form a strong, stable, socially responsible government, that will really usher in the change we all hope for.”

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
I hope they can cobble together some kind of coalition, LL. I honestly don't see Israel surviving, long-term, with Netenyahu in charge.
And frankly, the idea of him having nuclear weapons, while refusing to co-operate with inspectors, terrifies me. Why isn't Israel getting the same treatment as Iran - especially as Israel is KNOWN to have about 100 nuclear warheads?
On the other hand - no need to answer.

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
From Jerusalem Post:
Daily Beast:
........................................................................................................................NY Times lashes out at surprise Netanyahu win
Only hours after the surprise Likud victory, following weeks of polls showing the party would lose by as many as five mandates, the American media began its harsh critique of the will of the Israeli people, and especially of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In one New York Times op-ed, titled "Deep Wounds and Lingering Questions After Israel’s Bitter Race," Isabel Kershner wrote that the Netanyahu's win was "the result of an increasingly shrill campaign that raised questions about his ability to heal Israel’s internal wounds or better its standing in the world."
"Even while his critics said Mr. Netanyahu had reaffirmed his reputation as a cynical, calculating politician, it appeared that his approach succeeded in drawing votes from other right-leaning parties," referring to the prime minister's brash statements regarding the formation a Palestinian state, as well as the increase in Arab voters showing up to the polls.
Kershner harpooned Netanyahu's speech to the US Congress on March 3 by saying that "he angered the president of the United States with a speech to Congress and infuriated European leaders eager to see the peace process move ahead to create a Palestinian state."
Meanwhile, on news portal The Daily Beast, Jonathan Alter called Netanyahu desperate and warned of harsh consequences as a result of the win
"A reckoning is coming — faster than expected — for Netanyahu, his Likud Party and maybe even for the State of Israel itself," he wrote in a piece titled "Bibi’s Ugly Win Will Harm Israel."
"Instead of trying to hide his desperation, he flaunted (or contrived) it, to great political effect, winning by several seats more than expected."
Alter further warned that the Netanyahu's win would only serve to legitimize anti-Israel movements abroad. "[T]he 'BDS' movement (Boycotts, Divestment, Sanctions) will likely move from the (sometimes anti-Semitic) fringe closer to the center of the debate on college campuses and in international forums."
"Beset by European boycotts, rebuked by international tribunals, estranged from the president of the United States—it’s not a pretty picture of the fate of America’s closest ally in the region."
Daily Beast:
Bibi’s Ugly Win Will Harm Israel
A desperate Netanyahu used fear to grab the most seats in the election, but his rejection of a Palestinian state will further isolate the Jewish state.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu won a big election Tuesday, but he won ugly by staking out a new position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is likely to harm his nation in the months ahead.
A reckoning is coming—faster than expected—for Netanyahu, his Likud Party and maybe even for the State of Israel itself.
Complete returns showed that Netanyahu’s Likud Party won 29 seats in the Knesset to 24 seats for the Zionist Union (formerly Labor) Party headed by Isaac Herzog, who ran a more spirited campaign than expected but almost certainly fell short of the support necessary to form a government.
Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, whose job consists mostly of presiding over elections, said not long after the polls closed that he wants a coalition government and has given Netanyahu, Herzog and the other party leaders a couple of days to engage in a frenzy of (largely unconsummated) deal-making. But Herzog’s parliamentary math problem got worse as the evening wore on, and it’s hard to see where he finds the “mandates” (seats) to prevail.
Beset by European boycotts, rebuked by international tribunals, estranged from the president of the United States—it’s not a pretty picture.
One big surprise was the performance of the Joint List, a coalition of usually fractious Arab parties that won 13 seats and finished third, far better than Arab Israelis ever have in the past. But their influence will be limited because Arab parties traditionally refuse to join the government so as to avoid being complicit in official Israeli policy that they loathe.
As the returns came in, the center-left and other critics of Netanyahu held out hope that Moshe Kahlon—whose center-right Kulanu Party won 10 seats—would nurse his anger at Netanyahu (in whose government he once served) and side with Zionist Union. But even that would be unlikely to yield enough seats to oust Netanyahu. The small religious parties that often hold the balance of power faded amid Bibi’s last-minute panicky bid for right-wing votes.
That panic had a purpose. Netanyahu came back from the dead by doing something politicians almost never do—predicting his own defeat. He told base voters that he would lose if they didn’t abandon far-right-winger Naftali Bennett’s Habayit Hayeudi Party and flock back to Likud. Instead of trying to hide his desperation, he flaunted (or contrived) it, to great political effect, winning by several seats more than expected.
Like George W. Bush in his 2004 reelection campaign against John Kerry in the aftermath of 9/11, Netanyahu wielded security issues as a polarizing political weapon, overcoming personal unpopularity and a mediocre economic record with a campaign based largely on fear. It worked.
But at what cost? In the days before the election, Netanyahu accused the opposition of being manipulated by Americans, insulted Arabs for simply voting, doubled down on support for settlements in East Jerusalem and—most significantly—said there would be no Palestinian state on his watch, thereby confirming a view that critics always suspected he harbored.
Cynical about their politicians, some Israeli pundits predicted that Netanyahu would slip away from his new line, just as he this week repudiated his famous 2009 speech at Bar Ilan University in which he proclaimed, “Let us make peace,” and endorsed a two-state solution.
Bibi can try, but Monday’s comment set his feet in cement. “I think that anyone who moves to establish a Palestinian state and evacuate territory gives territory away to radical Islamist attacks against Israel,” Netanyahu told a website owned by his most generous supporter, American casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Should he go back on this pledge, his right-wing supporters would desert him and he would be forced to call another election next year that he would likely lose.
Netanyahu knows that intransigence on the Palestinians is harmful to his purported security priority—confronting a nuclear Iran. He knows that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, and other countries can’t ally with Israel against Iran until he makes peace with the Palestinians. But he was willing to do what it takes to win.
Now the rest of the world will do what it takes to punish his government. That means that the “BDS” movement (Boycotts, Divestment, Sanctions) will likely move from the (sometimes anti-Semitic) fringe closer to the center of the debate on college campuses and in international forums. As the Palestinians pursue their case globally with more finesse than they once had, the Israeli policy—shorn of efforts to achieve peace—will look increasingly illegitimate.
And Bibi and Likud might be in for a rude shock at the United Nations. On Tuesday, moderate Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told CNN that it was “hard to imagine” there would be no consequences from Netanyahu’s new one-state views.
Bibi has placed all his chips on the Republican Congress, which has no say over how the U.S. votes in the U.N. Schiff—who often reflects the view of the White House—hinted that the Obama administration might consider selectively lifting the American veto in the Security Council that has protected Israel for more than six decades.
While the U.S. will no doubt continue to veto the most obnoxious U.N. resolutions, others (like those based on comments of U.S. officials about the need for a two-state solution) are now more likely to pass with the tacit support of the U.S., opening a new chapter in international pressure on Israel.
Beset by European boycotts, rebuked by international tribunals, estranged from the president of the United States—it’s not a pretty picture of the fate of America’s closest ally in the region.
But that might be the fallout from the most bruising and consequential Israeli election in many years.

Analysis: Netanyahu's reelection will likely result in Likud cooperating with ultranationalists, which does not bode well for the peace process or Israel's international operation.
Something else - Israeli society now looks to be split down the middle?

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
Actually it has always been kind of split, there are the ultra-zionists, the secular Jews, the liberals, conservative and orthodox, ultra-orthodox, and hasidim who are the mainstream. There are also athiest Jews who want to live in their homeland but not follow the religion. Then there are the various Christian sects, branches of Islam .... in other words a hotchpotch. The big problem is the orthodox and ultra-orthodox who lead the anti-Islam sections of society. The ultra-orthodox are exempt from national service - or at least they were, the government has been trying for ages to make nat service compulsory for everyone. It's a disaster waiting to happen and with Netanyahu in charge that may happen sooner than later. LLIsraeli society now looks to be split down the middle?

Enraged by Netanyahu's rhetoric, White House officials believe Israeli-U.S. relations fundamentally changed
Three comments by the newly reelected Israeli prime minister left Team Obama fuming; officials in Washington say his stance on Palestinian statehood is forcing an American 'reassessment.'

On Wednesday, I asked a senior Obama administration official whether there was anything Benjamin Netanyahu could do to repair the damage done by his comments late in his reelection campaign. The official’s answer: “You can’t unring the bell.” Other officials, off the record, put it far, far more harshly than that.

Report: US revisiting Israel policy after PM's rejection of Palestinian state
After Netanyahu rules out Palestinian state day before elections, Politico says White House officials consider ceasing being Israel's diplomatic protector.

The Obama administration is reconsidering its role as Israel's protector in the international diplomacy arena following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of a Palestinian state, Politico reported Thursday.
Follow Ynetnews on Facebook and Twitter
“The positions taken by the prime minister in the last days of the campaign have raised very significant substantive questions that go far beyond just optics,” a senior Obama administration official told Politico.
Netanyahu, whose party's big election win all but ensures his return to the Prime Minister's Office, declared the day before the election that a Palestinian state would not be formed under his watch, a reversal of his 2009 statement in support of such a state, and in contradiction with long-standing US policy.
“We are signaling that if the Israeli government’s position is no longer to pursue a Palestinian state, we’re going to have to broaden the spectrum of options we pursue going forward,” warned the official.
The news site suggested that while the US would not cut back its financial and military support for Israel, it may become less supportive in international diplomatic forums.
“I do think the administration is going to look very closely at the possibility of either joining, or at least not blocking an internationally backed move at the UN to restate the parameters for ending the conflict,” said Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of the left-leaning pro-Israel lobby group J Street.
A decision not to block such a move would mean that an attempt by the Palestinians to pass a UN Security Council resolution to end Israel's presence in the West Bank might succeed in 2015. The Palestinians will also join the International Criminal Court on April 1 and hope to bring formal charges of war crimes against Israeli officials.
Shortly after exit polls were released Tuesday, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told AFP that "we will go to the Hague Tribunal, we will accelerate, continue and intensify" diplomatic efforts.
Politico's source noted that Netanyahu recently admitted that he had once approved settlement construction with the intention of cutting Palestinian areas off from one another.
“To actually come out and say that this construction is actually driven by efforts to undermine a future Palestinian state is fairly dramatic,” said the source.
The news site quoted a former Obama official, who spoke more bluntly about Netanyahu, saying: "He’s shown his true colors.”
It further noted that the White House's new point person on the Middle East is Rob Malley, whose appointment drew fire from some Israeli-American groups because of his past contacts with Hamas.

The Obama administration is reconsidering its role as Israel's protector in the international diplomacy arena following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of a Palestinian state, Politico reported Thursday.

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
Fox version:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/03/19/white-house-eyeing-un-to-pressure-israel-on-peace-deal/
The White House could soon look to the United Nations to pressure Israel into a peace deal with the Palestinians, a move sure to inflame tensions between President Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu.
The U.S. for years has helped Israel resist U.N. intervention in peace talks. But the Obama administration reportedly is weighing a shift in that approach after Netanyahu's Likud Party won big in Tuesday's election, positioning him for a third consecutive term as prime minister.
Shortly before the election, Netanyahu reversed course and declared he would not allow a Palestinian state on his watch. That puts him at odds with the U.S. government.
Asked repeatedly Wednesday where that leaves U.S. policy, Obama administration officials left the door open. Officials with both the White House and State Department said Obama still supports a two-state solution -- but they said the U.S. would now "reevaluate" its approach toward achieving that.
Foreign Policy reported Thursday that the U.S. in fact is looking at supporting a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for peace talks and a comprehensive settlement.
"The more the new [Israeli] government veers to the right the more likely you will see something [at the United Nations] in New York," a Western diplomat told Foreign Policy.

I would like to congratulate Obama on leaving the US with only two firm allies in the world. Unfortunately, they're Canada and Ukraine.

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
The area was always called Palestine, Lily, it beggars belief that there should be any argument about it - though from some comments, 'God says so', seems to be all some Israelis need to nab other people's land.
Of course Israel has a right to exist - but so does an independent Palestinian state, on land in Palestine. Israel simply cannot go on stealing land like this.
This is from Presstv., not the most unbiased of sources, but again, the photos speak for themselves:

Israeli troops uproot 300 Palestinian olive trees in West Bank
Israeli forces have once again attacked Palestinian olive farms in the occupied West Bank and destroyed hundreds of saplings.
Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian Authority official, said dozens of Israeli military vehicles and bulldozers on Wednesday evening uprooted some 300 olive trees in the village of Majdal Bani Fadilan, south of the city of Nablus.
The olive saplings had been planted as part of an agricultural project in the area, he added.
The Israeli forces also razed more than 5,000 meters of stone walls in the area, Daghlas said.
Majdal Bani Fadil, located on the eastern edge of the Nablus region, is surrounded by areas under Israeli military control as well as Israeli settlements on all sides.
The olive industry provides a livelihood for about 80,000 Palestinian families in the West Bank. Israel has uprooted over 800,000 olive trees in the occupied territories since 1967.
Earlier in January, Israelis settlers attacked the Palestinian properties in occupied territories and chopped down dozens of olive trees in the southern West Bank.
Settlers, mostly armed, regularly attack Palestinian villages and farms and set fire to their mosques, olive groves and other properties in the West Bank under the so-called “price tag” policy.
Price tag attacks are acts of vandalism and violence against Palestinians and their property as well as Islamic holy sites by Israeli settlers.
The attacks are carried out with impunity. Palestinians say the violent attacks by Israeli settlers are systematic and are often ignored by Israeli officials.
The Al-Tadamun Foundation for Human Rights, a Palestinian NGO, said in an annual 2014 report that an estimated 8,000 trees, some of them hundreds of years old, were damaged and destroyed altogether by the Israelis last year.

It's inexcuseable. No-one, anywhere in the world, is going to stand by and do nothing while their family's property is destroyed by invaders.

Re: Netanyahu row with Obama administration deepens
They've been doing that for years, Bonny. It's actually evil when you think about it. It is inexcusable and a blot on humanity for this to continue.
To think that Arizona was once considered for the displaced Jews. That would have been a better choice, in my opinion, however that could not have included Jerusalem.
Rothschild did well.............or did he?

Netanyahu apologises to Israeli-Arabs over election remarks
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32026995
BBC News 23 March 2015
From the section Middle East
Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video message on Facebook saying Arab voters were "voting in droves"
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he "regrets" warning "the Arabs are voting in droves" during last week's elections.
He said he had not meant to offend Israeli Arab voters.
In a Facebook message directed at supporters on election day, he warned that "right-wing rule is in danger" as left-wing organisations were bringing Arabs to vote "in buses".
The Joint List alliance of Arab-dominated parties rejected the apology.
The prime minister had feared his voters would stay at home, but won against expectations.
Mr Netanyahu now says he hopes to form a new governing coalition within two or three weeks.
Apologising for his comments he said: "I know the things I said a few days ago hurt some Israeli citizens.
"My actions as prime minister, including massive investment in minority sectors, prove the exact opposite.
"I think, similarly, that no element outside the state of Israel should intervene in our democratic processes."
'Cannot pretend'
Ayman Odeh, leader of the Joint Arab List - an alliance of Israeli Arab-dominated parties that united for the first time and secured 13 seats at last week's election, told Israel's Channel 10: "We do not accept this apology.
"It was to a group of elders and not to the elected leadership of Israel's Arabs. I want to see actions, how is he going to manifest this apology? Will he advance equality?"
Mr Netanyahu's comments on election day drew criticism from the White House, which said it was "deeply concerned" by "divisive rhetoric" that sought to marginalise Israeli Arabs.
Ahead of the vote, Mr Netanyahu also said he would not allow the creation of a Palestinian state if re-elected.
His centre-left opposition, the Zionist Union, had promised to repair ties with the Palestinians and the international community.
Mr Netanyahu has since watered down this position in an interview with MSNBC.
But White House adviser Denis McDonough said on Monday that "we cannot pretend that these comments were never made."
Israeli Arabs, descendants of the 160,000 Palestinians who remained after the State of Israel was created in 1948, represent about 20% the Israeli population.

Oh, he said it to get votes, LL, they're his words, and he owns them. Or, if he can't control his own tongue, then he isn't fit to lead the country.
