Netanyahu under fire after accusing Palestinian grand mufti of inciting Holocaust

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has come under fire for accusing the World War II Palestinian grand mufti of convincing Adolf Hitler to exterminate the Jews. The bold claim has been deemed incorrect by historians and Israeli opposition leaders.
Speaking to the Zionist Congress on Tuesday, Netanyahu spoke of a series of attacks by Muslims against Jews in Palestine during the 1920s, stating that those assaults were instigated by Haj Amin al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem at that time.

Al-Husseini flew to meet Adolf Hitler in Berlin in 1941, and that meeting was instrumental in the Nazi leader's decision to launch a campaign to exterminate Jews, Netanyahu said in his speech.

"Hitler didn't want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews. And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, 'If you expel them, they'll all come here.'”

Netanyahu then alleged that Hitler asked what he should do with the Jews – to which al-Husseini replied: “Burn them.”

The comments immediately received a backlash from opposition politicians and Holocaust experts, who accused Netanyahu of twisting historical facts.

Palestinian officials said Netanyahu appeared to be absolving Hitler of his crimes in order to blame Muslims.

"It is a sad day in history when the leader of the Israeli government hates his neighbor so much that he is willing to absolve the most notorious war criminal in history, Adolf Hitler, of the murder of 6 million Jews," said Saeb Erekat, the Palestine Liberation Organization's secretary general, as quoted by Reuters....more at link.

As I recall, Hitler came to power in 1933, the Nurremberg Laws were enacted in 1935, Kristallnacht took place in 1938. The meeting with the Grand Mufti was in 1941. There was anti-semitism in all European (Christian) countries, inluding the UK, before 1939, in fact it had existed for hundreds of years. LL

This question is one of the most difficult to answer. While Hitler made several references to killing Jews, both in his early writings (Mein Kampf) and in various speeches during the 1930s, it is fairly certain that the Nazis had no operative plan for the systematic annihilation of the Jews before 1941. The decision on the systematic murder of the Jews was apparently made in the late winter or the early spring of 1941 in conjunction with the decision to invade the Soviet Union.

That's quite interesting, on the links between Islam and Nazis. I doubt if the Grand Mufti objected terribly much to the holocaust, but that's a long way from claiming it was his idea.

This is worth a read, a massacre of Jews in York in 1190.   The Roman Catholic Church taught that Jews murdered Christ.   The reason they did this was because Emperor Constantine the Great made Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire and therefore the old belief that the Romans committed deicide by killing Jesus had to be somehow 'changed'.   Therefore it was decided the Jews killed him, despite the facts that he was tried for sedition against Rome; the Jews could find no reason to try him so they handed him over to the occupying power - Rome and  death by crucifixion was a Roman practice, the Jews stoned their criminals or drove them out into the desert to die.   LL

A small number of Jews were killed soon after the concentration camps started (March 1933 on). At that stage practically none were killed simply for being Jews. They were either opponents of the Nazi regime or were viewed as a threat or had angered leading Nazis.
During the Night of the Broken Glass (9-10 November 1938) and in the days immediately after, about 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration camps. Of these, 2,000 were dead by Christmas 1938.
Large-scale, systematic killings (by mobile killing units) began on 25 June 1941.
Routine gassings started on 8 December 1941.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters the Obama administration has no doubt who was responsible for the genocide, which involved the systematic murder of six million Jews.

AMMAN, Jordan – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday that Israel and Jordan have agreed on steps aimed at reducing tensions at a holy site in Jerusalem that have fanned Israeli-Palestinian violence.

"All the violence and the incitement to violence must stop. Leaders must lead," Kerry told reporters in the Jordanian capital after meeting with King Abdullah II and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The top U.S. diplomat said the steps include round-the-clock video monitoring and Israel's reaffirming of Jordan's special and historic role as custodian of the site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif.

The king suggested that monitoring, according to Kerry, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted.

Israel has pledged to maintain the rules of worship at the site, and Israeli and Jordanian authorities will meet about bolstering security, Kerry said.

Kerry, who met with Netanyahu in Berlin on Thursday, said the leaders "expressed their strong commitment to ending the violence and restoring the calm as soon as possible."...more at link.

The Israeli authorities are planning to toughen working conditions of the non-profit organizations in the country if more than half of their budget comes from abroad, media reported.

At the same time, Raphi Walden, head of the Israeli NGO “Physicians for Human Rights” argued that the new law is of discriminatory nature and is aimed at creating a negative image of non-profit organizations.
