Oslo: Bomb blast near Norway prime minister's office

A massive bomb blast has hit government buildings in the Norwegian capital Oslo, killing at least two people and injuring 15 others.

PM Jens Stoltenberg described the situation as "very serious".

The bomb was followed by a shooting incident near Oslo at a youth meeting of the Labour Party, which Mr Stoltenberg leads.

Unconfirmed reports said a man dressed as a police officer had opened fire indiscriminately, injuring five. [There have been recent reports that people were actually killed in this attack]

No group has said they carried out the attacks.

Hours after the bomb struck Oslo, officials said some people were still inside the damaged buildings, some of which were on fire.

Television footage from the government quarter showed rubble and glass from shattered windows in the streets - smoke was rising from some buildings where fires were burning. The wreckage of at least one car was on one street.

All roads into the city centre have been closed, said national broadcaster NRK, and security officials evacuated people from the area, fearing another blast.

Mr Stoltenberg, in a telephone call to Norwegian television, said all government ministers were believed to be safe.

He said he had been advised by police not to reveal his current location.

"Even if one is well prepared, it is always rather dramatic when something like this happens," he said.

Egil Vrekke, Assistant Chief Constable of Oslo police told the BBC the rescue operation was ongoing.

"We are issuing warnings just make sure people are not in the area in case there are further explosions," he told the BBC.

"We have cordoned off large areas. There are bomb experts at the scene investigating whether there are other devices in the area."

A spokesman for Oslo University hospital said seven people had been taken there for treatment.

Hours later, reports emerged of a shooting at a Labour Party youth camp in Utoeya, and island outside the capital.

Mr Stoltenberg, who had been due to visit the camp on Saturday, told TV2 the situation in Utoeya was critical.

At least 500 people were at the camp, said reports, and five people were said to have been injured.

Assistant Chief Constable Egil Vrekke: "There are a lot of casualties"

State Secretary Kristian Amundsen said Friday was a public holiday in Norway so the government offices were not as busy as they might usually have been.

"But there are many hundreds of people in these buildings every day," he told the BBC.

"We have to focus on the rescue operation - there are still people in the building, there are still people in the hospital."

Reuters said the oil ministry was among the other government buildings hit.

Oistein Mjarum, head of communications for the Norwegian Red Cross, said his offices were close to the site of the explosion.

"There was a massive explosion which could be heard over the capital Oslo," he told the BBC.

"This is a very busy area on Friday afternoon and there was a lot of people in the streets, and many people working in these buildings that are now burning," he said.

An NRK journalist, Ingunn Andersen, said the headquarters of tabloid newspaper VG had also been damaged.

"I see that some windows of the VG building and the government headquarters have been broken. Some people covered with blood are lying in the street," AP quoted her as saying.

"It's complete chaos here. The windows are blown out in all the buildings close by."

Local resident Silvio told the BBC the blast shook everything in his apartment.

"I went running out onto the street to see what happened. All the neighbours came running out too."

He said he saw two or three unconscious people being carried on stretchers and others on the floor.

"If they were dead or not I wouldn't be able to tell you but they were receiving assistance at the time."

"The police were clearing the area and there was already various security guards who were going over to attend to the various shops whose glass had been broken out."

Mr Mjarum said people across the Oslo and Norway were in shock.

"We have never had a terrorist attack like this in Norway - if that's what it is - but of course this has been a great fear for all Norwegians when they have seen what has been happening around the world."

The United States has condemned the "despicable acts of violence" in Oslo, while the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said he was "deeply shocked" by "these acts of cowardice for which there is no justification".

As at 22.15 CET, there are 12 dead, 8 injured, and both figures are expected to rise. On the island the ranges of the people there was 15-25, they were attending a Youth Movement Rally. The gunman, disguised as a policeman, told the people he was there to do a security check because of the earlier bomb in Oslo; he then pulled out an automatic weapon and began shooting, as one observer said "in executioner style". He shot at people who jumped into the sea trying to swim away from the island. The real police arrived and he was arrested. The police are searching Oslo as they are sure there was more than one person involved in the bombing. They are also searching the island for possible explosives. The question is being raised as to whether this is Al Qaida inspired. The Norwegians are in total shock; one man said they hadn't had anything like this since WW2, Norway being considered one of the safest places in the world. The attack is being called 'Norway's 9/11'. It looks like Norway will never be the same again. LL

ETA. The expolosion in Oslo has now been confirmed as a car bomb; latest casualty is the capital is 7 dead and many seriously injured.

They are Western, they are Christian, they are quite well-off (Norway has a high standard of living), they are first and foremost citizens of a country that is in NATO, supports the US and the UK, has troops in Afghanistan, and Iraq (though they may have gone form the latter by now). All in all, they are the spawn of the Crusaders so they are fair and legitimate targets. Fanatics and fundamental radicalised people do not differentiate between the adults and the kids, all are tainted in the same way. The awful thing is that, if this is an Al Qaida operation, again the moderate Muslims will get blamed. LL

Which is of no comfort to anyone who has been caught up in this, but there is at present no indication that this is some 'plot'.

The latest figures this morning at 08.55 CET: on the island there were 500-700 young people, at least 80 dead and many injured. In Oslo, 7 confirmed dead and many injured, some very seriously. At present a 32 year old Norwegian has been arrested. Police continue to search for accomplices. LL

They are asking businesses to chedk their CCTV videos and contact them if anything is on the videos that might be of help, At present they do not know if he acted alone; they are giving a press conference at this moment and being cagey about various matters.

Scores killed in Norway attack

At least 84 people died when a gunman opened fire at an island youth camp in Norway, hours after a bomb attack on the capital, Oslo, police say.

Police are questioning a 32-year-old Norwegian man in connection with Friday's attacks.

The man was arrested on tiny Utoeya island outside Oslo, where police say he opened fire on teenagers.

The Oslo bombing killed at least seven. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said government members were among the dead.

Mr Stoltenberg, whose offices were among those badly hit by the blast, described the attacks as "a national tragedy".

The attacks were "like a nightmare" for Norway, he told a news conference in Oslo: "Never since the Second World War has our country been hit by a crime on this scale."

He added that he was due to have been on Utoeya - "a youth paradise turned into a hell" - a few hours after the attacks began. "He asked people to gather round and then he started shooting, so these young people fled into the bushes and woods ”

Mr Stoltenberg said he knew some of the dead in the Oslo attack. "Beyond that I cannot give further details while the police carry out their investigation."

He said it was too early too comment on a possible motive for the attacks. No group has said it carried them out.

The suspect is reported by local media to have had links with right-wing extremists. The authorities have named him as Anders Behring Breivik. His Oslo apartment was searched overnight.

The BBC's Richard Galpin, near the island, says that Norway has had problems with neo-Nazi groups in the past but the assumption was that such groups had been largely eliminated and did not pose a significant threat.

The authorities are still not sure whether the attacks were the work of just one man.

Earlier, the number of dead from the island shooting spree, which is among the world's most deadly, was put at 10. Hundreds of young people were attending the summer camp organised by the ruling Labour Party on Utoeya island.

Eyewitnesses described how a tall, blond man dressed as a policeman opened fire indiscriminately, prompting camp attendees to jump into the water to try and escape the hail of bullets. Some of the teenagers were shot at as they tried to swim to safety.

Armed police were deployed to the island but details of the operation to capture the suspect remain unclear.

Police say they discovered many more victims after searching the area around the island.

"It goes without saying that this gives dimensions to this incident that are exceptional," police director Oystein Maeland is quoted as saying by the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

Police warned the death toll may rise further as rescue teams continued to scour the waters around the island.

The gunman is reported to have been armed with a handgun, an automatic weapon and a shotgun.

"He travelled on the ferry boat from the mainland over to that little inland island posing as a police officer, saying he was there to do research in connection with the bomb blasts," NRK journalist Ole Torp told the BBC.

"He asked people to gather round and then he started shooting, so these young people fled into the bushes and woods and some even swam off the island to get to safety."

One 15-year-old eyewitness described how she saw what she thought was a police officer open fire.

"He first shot people on the island. Afterward he started shooting people in the water," youth camp delegate Elise told AP.

Mr Stoltenberg had been due to visit the camp on Saturday. Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, who visited the camp on Thursday, praised those who were attending.

"The country has no finer youth than young people who go for a summer camp doing politics, doing discussions, doing training, doing football, and then they experience this absolutely horrendous act of violence," he said.
'Despicable violence'

In Oslo, government officials urged people to stay at home and avoid central areas of the city.

Shards of twisted metal, rubble and glass littered the streets of central Oslo left devastated by Friday's enormous explosion.

Windows in the buildings of the government quarter were shattered and witnesses described how smoke filled the atmosphere around the blast site.

There are also concerns that more victims may still be inside buildings hit by the initial massive explosion.

Emergency services have had difficulty accessing these buildings amid concerns about further possible explosions as well as fears the blast may have left buildings unstable.

Unusually, he was captured alive, Tony - for all his desire to massacre innocent people, he didn't have the b*lls to end his own life.
There are some stories of great heroism coming out now from survivors, and the young survivors have already made it clear they WILL be returning to the island - he doesn't get to take that from them.
