Planned refugee shelter in eastern German town of Bautzen set on fire
A planned home for asylum seekers has been burnt down in Germany's Saxony state. Police reported onlookers cheering at the burning building and preventing the fire brigade from doing its work.
A building meant to house refugees in Bautzen in Saxony caught fire on Saturday night, local officials said. The structure, known as the "Husarenhof," was originally a hotel and was being modified to shelter asylum seekers.
No one was hurt.
Local German public broadcaster MDR tweeted this picture:
Local police said they were still searching for reasons why the fire broke out. The criminal investigation department and a group specializing in right-wing crime were looking at possible reasons, police said.
Officials also reported that locals in Bautzen cheered as the building burnt. "Some people reacted to the arson with derogatory comments and undisguised joy," police said in a statement. Some onlookers were under the influence of alcohol, they added.
Several people present in the scene hindered fire officials from carrying out their work. Three people were expelled from the area and two were taken into police custody after they did not heed warnings, officials said.
Hate crimes on the rise
The incident in Bautzen comes shortly after a mob shouting anti-migrant slogans blocked a bus full of refugees in Clausnitz, also in Saxony. Saxony's Chief Minister Stanislaw Tillich condemned the incident in the two towns as "disgusting and hateful."
Nearly 1 million asylum seekers fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and Asia have arrived in the country last year. Public response has been largely positive, but possible migrant involvement in cases of sexual assault and a perceived threat to German culture has spurred resentment in some quarters.
There were more than 1,000 arson attacks on planned and completed refugee shelters across Germany in 2015.
Local police said they were still searching for reasons why the fire broke out.
Oh, I think I can hazard a guess.....

Belgium suspends Schengen, polices border with France
More than 250 officers allocated to stop Calais migrants from coming to Belgium.
By LAURENS CERULUS 2/23/16, 7:05 PM CET Updated 2/23/16, 7:12 PM CET
The Belgian government deployed extra police to the French border to prevent migrants from the Calais refugee ‘jungle’ crossing into Belgium, Minister of Interior Affairs Jan Jambon said Tuesday.
“We want to avoid that tent camps are created on our side of the border, partially because of the upcoming tourist season, and have started to deploy 250 to 290 police officers on a daily basis,” the minister said at a press conference announcing the measures.
The government notified the European Union Tuesday of the temporary suspension of the Schengen agreement on free movement.
If stopped, migrants will be ordered by the police to leave the country, Jambon said. “To be clear, we are not closing the border,” said Jambon, arguing that police will have to pick out migrants individually.
The move comes as France awaits a court ruling that could order French authorities to break up camps and settlements of migrants near Calais, known as the “Calais jungle.” Local and national politicians have expressed concerns that Calais’ migrants would move to Belgian coastal towns if removed from their current settlements.
“The reason why we’re taking these measures now is because we have seen thousands of people headed in our direction,” said Jambon’s spokesperson Olivier Van Raemdonck. “These people have to be dissuaded [to enter Belgium] in order to avoid issues of public order.”
Since New Year, police forces had encountered groups of up to a hundred migrants crossing the border at once, Van Raemdonck said. Belgian authorities found a makeshift camp of 32 refugees in Adinkerke, Belgium Monday.
The NGO Help Refugees this week estimated the number of refugees settled in Calais at 5,500, including 650 children.
Belgium is the seventh country to request the temporary suspension of Schengen rules over the past few months, after Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway (a Schengen but not an EU member).

Re: Hungary is new hot spot on migrant route into EU - Part 2
https://www.rt.com/news/333495-hungary-migrant-quota-referendum/
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced plans to call a referendum on mandatory migrant quotas proposed by the EU as a solution to the current crisis engulfing Europe. Orban hinted he hoped Hungarians would reject the plan.
Orban said that the referendum question would be: "Do you want the European Union to be able to mandatory settle non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary, even without the approval of the Hungarian Parliament?" The PM added that those who choose not to back the EU's proposal and reject the plan would thus be supporting Hungary’s independence.

"The EU has no right to make decisions that could change the lives of people without asking them," the PM told a news conference on Wednesday, adding that such EU action "equals an abuse of power." If introduced, the quotas would redraw the ethnic, cultural and religious map not only of Hungary, but of the whole of Europe, he warned.

A mandatory quota for the resettlement of migrants and refugees has long been rejected by the Hungarian government. By putting the issue to a national referendum, "the government is responding to public sentiment," Orban said.
Without specifying when the voting might be held, the PM said that the question had already been submitted for approval to the National Election Office.
The government-initiated referendum can be taken as a sure thing because the majority in the Hungarian parliament "surely support it," Mariann Ory, a journalist and political commentator from Budapest who was at the meeting where the statement was made, told RT.
The Hungarian governing party Fidesz has already started collecting signatures against the mandatory quota and have around 2 million so far, “so we can say that quite a lot of people in Hungary definitely do not support the quota," Ory said.

Orbán: government to call referendum on EU migrant quotas
By Hungary Matters
The government has decided to call a referendum on the European Union’s proposed mandatory migrant quota scheme, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Wednesday. Citizens will be asked: “Do you want to allow the European Union to mandate the resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary without the approval of the National Assembly?” the prime minister said.Orbán’s cabinet chief, Antal Rogán, has already submitted the question to the National Election Committee for approval. The prime minister said the referendum question means that no one other than Hungary’s elected lawmakers can make decisions on migrant quotas.
He said it is “no secret that Hungary’s parliament opposes migrant quotas”, meaning that by voting “No” citizens will stand up for Hungary’s independence and ensure the rejection of the quota scheme. “Democracy is one of the main pillars of the EU” and no decision that affects or changes people’s lives can be made without their approval. The quota scheme would “redraw Hungary and Europe’s ethnic, cultural and religious identity”, which no EU body has the right to do. The people need to be asked about the scheme just as they were about joining the EU, the prime minister said.

Let me also address the issue of Search and Rescue. The obligation to help people in distress at sea is a general, universal responsibility. It applies to all vessels. Regardless of whether they are part of a NATO or national mission. If Allied vessels encounter people in distress at sea, they have to live up to their national responsibility to assist.
In case of rescue of persons coming via Turkey, they will be taken back to Turkey. In carrying out their tasks, our nations will abide by national and international law.
So, no more getting 'rescued' 100 yards from their departure point, and getting a comfortable free ride into Europe?

Ali Arian, who's been living in the city of Magdeburg for some months, also wants to apply to be flown back to Afghanistan. "I failed to get a positive reply from the authorities," said Arian.
"Although I have a degree in pharmacy they told me they couldn't offer me an internship. I'm living in a fascist federal state and I just want to leave," he added. Arian said he was given no opportunity to discuss his asylum application. He argues his only options at the moment are to wait for years until his application is rejected anyway, or just leave the country now.

"Although there are no jobs in Afghanistan, it is better than here. I want to let young Afghans know that they shouldn't fall for empty promises. We mustn't expect anything from our government. Instead, we should take care of Afghanistan's future ourselves."
Precisely. Germany - and Europe - had to rebuild in 1945. It's about time these 'migrants' did the same in their own countries.

Re: Hungary is new hot spot on migrant route into EU - Part 2
Another day of chaos and misery, isn't it? I see Greece is now doing a lot of complaining about being left holding the 'migrants', but I don't personally see the rest of the EU paying too much attention to Tsipras.
The time for him to grow a backbone was last summer, when he let Germany trample Greece underfoot, and ignored the results of the referendum he himself had called. And as Greece has a remarkably large navy, they could have been doing much, much more to stop these people coming to Greece in the first place.
Every single person that has encouraged this mass migration, from those idiots holding up stupid #refugeeswelcome signs, to governments that have turned a blind eye to human trafficking in the guise of 'caring', has blood on their hands, IMO.

Macedonian police have fired tear gas after migrants and refugees broke through a gate on the country's border with Greece.
Thousands of people have been stuck on the Greek side of the border as Macedonian officials allow only a trickle of people through each day.
Frustration boiled over on Monday, with a few hundred people breaking through the gate, chanting "open the border" and throwing stones at Macedonian police, according to reports.
Police also used stun grenades to calm the crowd, Associated Press said, several migrants were nearly trampled and one officer injured.
Macedonian authorities have now sent special police reinforcements to the area by helicopter.

That's an excellent expose of the creatures making money out of this destruction - and no, they aren't all traffickers.
I seem to recall that American churches are also being paid tens of millions of dollars by Washington to import these people; scammers and criminals, the whole damned lot of them.

When you talk with journalists from Britain or the United States who think that Sweden's migration policy is a role model, you have to think of those journalists who once saw the Soviet Union as a model. Communism did not work; Sweden's migration policy does not work. That Sweden is a "humanitarian superpower" is truthfully nothing but marketing: the Green Party and some Social Democrats want to export Sweden's liberal migration policy to the rest of Europe.
Although a small clique in Sweden have become millionaires because of the migration industry, the schools, police, social services and taxpayers in Sweden have lost a lot and have a difficult and uncertain future. There will be major conflicts in Sweden. There is nothing "noble" in Sweden's migration policy. The Swedish migration model, far from being a good example of how a migration policy should function, is an embarrassment and a disaster, and its final result is chaos, conflict, and corruption.

More than 27,000 refugees have been stranded in Greece after countries along the migrant route created a bottleneck by following Austria's lead in introducing limits on the number they will let pass.
Troubled Greece is now set to be turned into a massive refugee camp as Brussels officials are today expected to agree to hand over £375million to Athens in return for it providing shelter for 100,000 people.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel last night performed a major U-turn as she told migrants trying to leave Greece they could not choose which European country they move to and should stay there. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said: 'We have come to the time when Greece is likely to be sacrificed'.
He said he had warned Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras: 'It will be your responsibility because you did not do anything on the Turkish-Greek border.'

'What I've seen in Europe is not what I dreamed about. It's not what [the smugglers] told me it would be,' Gazwan Abdulhasen Abdulla, a 37-year-old who had worked as a truck driver in Iraq, told the LA Times.
After paying a substantial sum to smugglers to travel to Europe, he is now returning to his wife and four children in Basra, along with 150 others on a one-way ticket to Iraq.
'The food was terrible, so disgusting that not even animals should be fed it. They made us sleep in these cold, empty buildings and when someone said they were sick, they just ignored us.
'You could feel it everywhere that Germans looked down at us like we were bums. I miss my family and can't wait to get home.'

Austria: Bulgarian convicted of human smuggling
A Bulgarian national arrested after Austrian police found 20 migrants packed into the nearly airtight back of his truck has been found guilty of human smuggling and sentenced to five years in prison.
Austrian broadcaster ORF cited police as testifying that they found 20 Syrian, Iranian and Afghan nationals pressed tightly against each other in a shared space of less than 7 square meters (about 7 square yards) when they stopped the refrigeration truck in August.
The court in the city of Linz, west of Vienna, didn't identify the 41-year-old, in keeping with Austrian confidentiality laws. He was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty. The truck was stopped only after a chase in which two patrol cars were rammed, injuring one officer.
Macedonia has intermittently opened its border with Greece to a tiny trickle of Syrian and Iraqi refugees, leaving about 10,000 more people camped on the Greek side, with more arriving daily.
The border bottleneck has left at least 25,000 people stranded in Greece, the first European country that migrants reach in smuggling boats from Turkey. As the prosperous but divided continent flails in search of a solution to the migration crisis, individual countries led by Austria have imposed refugee caps that have caused a domino effect down the Balkan migrant corridor, which was traversed by a million people over the past year.
Greek police say Macedonian police opened the Idomeni crossing at midnight Tuesday and at 7 a.m. Wednesday, each time for two hours. They admitted a total of 170 people from Syria and Iraq — the only nationalities allowed to continue north.
Macedonia says it will only allow in as many refugees as Serbia, its northern neighbor, accepts each day.

Foreign Ministry rejects referendum criticism from European leaders
By Hungary Matters March 3rd, 2016
The Foreign Ministry said it was “outrageous” that some European leaders have criticised the Hungarian government for “exercising a fundamental tool of democracy” by initiating a referendum on the EU’s mandatory migrant quota scheme The ministry responded to remarks Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland made to the UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday in which he implied that by holding the referendum, Hungary was “retreating from” European human rights principles. “States cannot simply opt in and out of their international obligations as they see fit,” Jagland told the council, referring to the referendum initiative.
Hungary’s foreign ministry rejected Jagland’s “accusations” in a statement and stressed that Hungary has always complied with all international conventions. The ministry said that “in line with international accords, Hungary provided care for 400,000 migrants last year”, but added that “the government sticks to the stance that no international agreement ensures illegal migrants the right to decide which European country they want to live in”. Hungary will protect both its own borders and those of the Schengen Area, the ministry insisted.

Events are proving Hungary's position to be right, IMO, LL. And of course the EU elites are screaming because the Hungarian government has dared to ask Hungarians what they want, instead of obeying orders from Merkel.

The Latest: Migrant sentenced to 4-1/2 years jail in Serbia
PARIS (AP) — A Serbian court has sentenced a human trafficker to four and a half years in prison for smuggling some 200 migrants over the border from Macedonia last year.
The Organized Crime Court ruled Friday that Rade Sivcev was guilty of "illegal crossing of the state border and human smuggling" between August to December last year. The migrants included Palestinians, Syrians and Pakistanis who sought to reach Hungary, which is a member of the 28-country European Union. Serbia is not.
Human smuggling has flourished in Serbia since the country became part of the so-called Balkan migrant corridor for hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Migrants are often transported in overcrowded vans or crammed in cargo trucks. Many get robbed or double-crossed by ruthless smugglers.
Hungary's prime minister says the European Union should not give up its power to "exclusively" protect its external borders even if an agreement is reached with Turkey next week on stemming the flow of migrants into the region.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Friday that "zero immigration is optimal" for Hungary, which has filed a lawsuit at the European Court of Justice against the quota plan to redistribute migrants from Italy and Greece.
Orban spoke after a meeting with Horst Seehofer, head of the Christian Social Union, the smallest party in Germany's governing coalition, and one of the most prominent domestic critics of Chancellor Angela Merkel's policies on migrants.
While Seehofer said he supported Orban's position of tightening national border controls as long as so many migrants were at the EU's external borders, both leaders said their meeting was not an effort to weaken Merkel or her government.
Croatia's government has proposed to Parliament to amend a law that would allow the army to be deployed to the country's borders to tackle the migration crisis.
Croatia's Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said Friday the measure would not mean that the army would be deployed "tomorrow, but would leave the possibility open."
He says Croatia's neighbor Slovenia has already deployed its army to the border, while Serbia is considering the option.
The Balkan countries and Austria have recently introduced tight restrictions to stem the flow of migrants. That has resulted in thousands of refugees and other migrants being stranded in Greece on the border with Macedonia.
According to the proposed amendment, Croatia's army would help the police in patrolling the borders.
Opposition parties denounced the government's plans, saying the deployment of the army would raise tensions among Balkan countries that are still reeling from the wars in the 1990s.
More than 1.2 million people applied for asylum for the first time in the European Union last year, more than double the number in 2014.
The EU's statistics agency said Friday that most people applying in the 28 EU countries were Syrian, Iraqi or Afghan nationals. It said 362,800 Syrians applied for asylum.
More than a third — 441,800 people — applied for the first time in Germany. In per-capita terms, the most people applied in Hungary, Sweden, Austria and Finland.
Only 140 people sought asylum in Croatia.
Eurostat's figures concern only first-time applicants in 2015. Almost half a million asylum applications were still being processed at the end of 2014.
