If - IF - there is any truth in that, it would explain why Cameron was the first to start shouting about terrorism. And I wish the media didn't keep calling these people 'British' - they're only British on paper.

As Russia bans flights to Egypt, the domestic tourism industry is at a crossroads. However, the closure of one of the most popular destination for Russian tourists has opened the door for the Crimea to attract more holiday makers.
A traditional holiday destination for decades, tourism to the Crimea is on the rise, with 3.84 million tourists visiting the peninsula through September. More than in the whole 2014.
Crimea could offer accommodation and entertainment as good as at Turkish and Egyptian resorts, says the head of the region Sergey Aksenov. He added that it would greatly boost domestic tourism.
At present, there are 262 hotels and resorts in the Crimea, some of them are all-inclusive. The authorities say the mild climate makes Crimea suitable not just for summer holidays.
Well, Crimea is stunningly beautiful, has good beaches and warm water, and is nutter-free....
Anyone sane, never mind Russian, would pick Crimea over the Middle East.

Sorry, no substitute for Egypt in my eyes, they don't have pyramids or 3000 plus years of history. IMO of course. LLlily wrote:Definitely at this point in time.

Agree, LL - except that Westerners are taking their lives in their hands at present if they visit the Pyramids. No doubt some intrepid travellers are still going there, but for the average sea and sunshine, family package holiday, there is sadly no-where in that area safe any more.

Sure, but there's nothing in the Crimea that remotelly makes me want to holiday there. My favorite country in the whole world has always been Egypt. The history is unparalleled to me.
However I understand that until this uncertainty is sorted out, I would not go there.

I wouldn't either, but I wouldn't consider the Crimea as a substitute. LLlily wrote:However I understand that until this uncertainty is sorted out, I would not go there.

Re: Russian jet crashes over Egypt
Remember, Lily, it's quite normal for Europeans to take off to the nearest beach with good weather, even in the winter, and until now that's often been in the countries now being attacked by terrorists.
Egypt was never fundamentalist moslem - except for that brief spell when bl**dy Obama regime-changed Egypt. Until recently, Turkey wasn't, either, but I can see Turkey being dropped by a lot of people as well.
It's one thing taking a chance when you're on your own, but if Mr and Mrs Ordinary Brit and their kids just want to get away from rain, then they won't go anywhere they are liable to be blown up by lunatics.
I doubt if Mr and Mrs Ordinary Russian are much different - why take the chance, when they have wonderful, safe resorts on their own doorsteps?

Re: Russian jet crashes over Egypt
I do know that most Europeans want to go where there is sun for rest and relaxation to get away from cold climates. They sometimes go where they can.
I will never forget arriving in Cairo from Riyadh. The locals were a delight after that horrible experience in K.S.A.

Bad news - it was indeed a bomb:
https://www.rt.com/news/322393-russian-plane-crash-terrorist-attack/
The Russian plane crash in Sinai, Egypt, was caused by a terrorist attack as traces of explosives have been found in the wreckage of the plane, Federal Security Service director Aleksandr Bortnikov told President Vladimir Putin.

Russian plane crash in Sinai
“We can say that that [Sinai plane crash] was a terror act,” Bortnikov told Putin. According to the FSB chief, experts analyzed passengers’ belongings as well as the parts of the plane. “After the examination on all these objects, we have found traces of a foreign-made explosive substance,” Bortnikov said.
“During the flight, a homemade device with the power of 1.5 kilograms of TNT was detonated. As a result, the plane fell apart in the air, which can be explained by the huge scattering of the fuselage parts of the plane,” he added.

This not the first time that Russia has faced “barbarous terrorist crimes, more often without apparent causes, outside or domestic, as it was with the explosion at the railway station in Volgograd at the end of 2013,” He added: “We haven’t forgotten anything or anyone. The murder of our nationals in Sinai is among the bloodiest crimes in [terms of] the number of casualties.”
But Russia won’t be “wiping tears from our soul and heart,” he said. “This [tragedy] will stay with us forever. But this won’t stop us from finding and punishing the culprit.”
Vladimir Putin has vowed to find and punish the culprits behind the Sinai plane attack. “Our military work in Syria must not only continue. It must be strengthened in such a way so that the terrorists will understand that retribution is inevitable,” he said....etc.
The only consolation is that Moscow will bide its time and then do something truly dreadful to the perpetrators. And it won't involve singing Imagine....

Russia is now using the Bear bombers - I think that's about the first time they've ever done anything more than wave at other pilots? Moscow will grind them into dust without a second's thought, Lily.

Re: Russian jet crashes over Egypt
http://news.sky.com/story/1588894/russia-and-france-to-join-forces-against-is
Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to set up a joint military operation with France to combat Islamic State.
Moscow says the move follows a telephone conversation with French President Francois Hollande.
Mr Putin has apparently ordered the Russian Navy to contact its French counterparts, to work together as allies.
I should think that means France will be acting legally, not only because it was attacked, but because Russia was asked into Syria by the government?

I would like some advice on this but on the face of it, it sounds like it is legal? Not only because France has declared war on ISIS?

Re: Russian jet crashes over Egypt
I think so, Lily - I think the key is that Russia was asked in by the legal government of Syria, so if France is working with Russia, they are included in the grand coalition which includes Iran and Iraq?
Now, I don't care if the UK joins in and wipes out every terrorist on the face of the Middle Eastern earth, but I would prefer them to do it legally this time.
And I hate to say it, but I simply do not trust Obama not to 'accidentally' bomb Assad's troops to 'accidentally' help his Sunni chums; I don't think anyone trusts the Obama regime - including European governments.

Re: Russian jet crashes over Egypt
That what I also thought, Bonny. It is a coalition which will expand further. As you say, it had better be done legally this time.
You have no idea how this morning the media has turned against O. It is too obvious even for them. He seems down today. I don't know if it is sinking in with him yet.
It is possible for presidents to be impeached for treason. The President takes an oath to keep the US citizens safe etc. When required, justice can move swiftly here.
