The Observer view on the new government and Labour in opposition
Observer editorial

As Theresa May lays out her vision, Labour needs to act like a real opposition

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jul/17/observer-view-on-labour-party

A good summation of the current state of the two main UK political parties. LL

Yes, that is worth reading, thanks, LL.

Here's the thing. I don't see Corbyn as this amiable old leftist duffer - I see him as one of the spoiled, progressive elite, with his safe seat with the rest of the progressive elites in Islington. He champions some seriously nasty people overseas, and does nothing to stop his hard-left Trot supporters abusing and intimidating anyone in Labour that isn't a Trot.

IMO, he is NOT a nice man. And I would still like to know why the Stasi let him and Abbott do their romantic road trip round East Germany.

,,,, why the Stasi let him and Abbott do their romantic road trip round East Germany.

Two answers to that:

1.   It suited the Stasi to let them roam - but they would have been closely monitored just in case they did something that could later be used as 'leverage'

2.   They were considered no threat - I leave you to read into that what you will.     LL

Yep. Neither of them were 'top notch' politicians so they were really not that much use at that time to the Stasi, not even as possible 'sleepers' as there was at that time no guarantee they would get any further up the political ladder. LL thumbsup

Angela Eagle Quits Labour Leadership Race
Ms Eagle's decision means Owen Smith will be the sole challenger to Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour party.

Angela Eagle is quitting the race to challenge Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour party.

It means Owen Smith is the only remaining contender to face Mr Corbyn.

Ms Eagle, Mr Smith and their supporters had been gathering nominations from Labour MPs and MEPs ahead of a deadline at 5pm on Wednesday.

Mr Smith's supporters claimed their candidate was ahead with around 100 nominations. Ms Eagle will now support Mr Smith's challenge.

Opponents of Mr Corbyn in both camps had agreed that a three-way contest would give the Labour leader an advantage and potentially wreck their campaign to remove him.

More follows...

Oh. Mrs May appears to have gone full Iron Lady and trampled all over the hapless Corbyn...

http://order-order.com/2016/07/20/remind-him-of-anybody/

Theresa May was sounding an awful lot like the last female PM, she opened with a jibe: “In my years here in this house, I’ve long heard the Labour party asking what the Conservative Party does for women. It keeps making us Prime Minister.”...etc.

Corbyn pushes the red button. Mandatory reselection. He's forcing a split if he wins. The wilful destruction of a political party. Tragic.

Yup. It won't matter how good a job a Labour MP is doing for his or her constituency (and they aren't all useless troughers) if they don't toe the Jezza Trot line, they will be chucked out.

And then get re-elected as Independents......

Wages

"It cannot be right that in some parts of Britain you earn more than in other parts of Britain."

Hello? Cost of living in London as opposed to further-flung parts of the UK? I'll warrant my own cost of living is considerably lower than someone in Greater London - and my quality of life is probably better too.

That's absolutely astounding; he clearly has NO concept of economics, how the market works, etc.

Though maybe such things are unneccesary when your idea of Paradise is for the plebs to work at the local tractor factory, with free State-grown turnips for all.

The campaign launch included one firm policy: Future Labour governments will require firms that employ more than 21 people to publish equality pay audits. Former Prime Minister David Cameron made this compulsory for firms with more than 250 staff.

More bureaucracy and red tape! Just what small enterprises need to thrive! Man's a wker
