Michael Flynn: Trump's national security adviser quits.

Donald Trump's national security adviser, Michael Flynn, has resigned over his contacts with Russia, the White House has announced.

Mr Flynn is alleged to have discussed US sanctions with the Russian ambassador before Mr Trump took office.

He is said to have misled officials about the conversation.

Earlier, US media reported that the Justice Department had warned the White House about the contacts late last month.

They said that Mr Flynn might be vulnerable to Russian blackmail.

Senior Democrats had called for Mr Flynn to be fired.

It is illegal for private citizens to conduct US diplomacy, and the calls happened late last year before Mr Flynn was appointed to the administration.

In his letter of resignation, Mr Flynn said he had "inadvertently briefed the vice-president-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador".

A White House statement said Lt Gen Joseph Keith Kellogg had been appointed as interim replacement.

Mr Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, initially denied having discussed sanctions with Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, and Vice-President Mike Pence publicly denied the allegations on his behalf.

However, Mr Flynn later told the White House that sanctions may have been discussed.

Russian lawmakers mount fierce defense of Flynn

MOSCOW (AP) February 14, 2017 — Russian lawmakers on Tuesday mounted a fierce defense of U.S. President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, who resigned following reports that he misled White House officials about his contacts with Russia.

Michael Flynn resigned Monday night, conceding that he gave "incomplete information" about his calls with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. A U.S. official told The Associated Press that Flynn was in frequent contact with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak on the day the Obama administration imposed sanctions on Russia after U.S. intelligence reported that Russia had interfered with the U.S. elections. The Kremlin has confirmed that Flynn has been in contact with Kislyak but denied that they talked about lifting sanctions.

Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the foreign affairs committee at the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, said in a post on Facebook that firing a national security adviser for his contacts with Russia is "not just paranoia but something even worse."

Kosachev also expressed frustration with the Trump administration. "Either Trump hasn't found the necessary independence and he's been driven into a corner... or Russophobia has permeated the new administration from top to bottom."

Kosachev's counterpart at the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, Alexei Pushkov, tweeted shortly after the announcement that "it was not Flynn who was targeted but relations with Russia." President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on Flynn's resignation, saying that "it's none of our business." Asked if Moscow still hopes that relations with the U.S. are going to improve, he said it is "too early to say" since "Trump's team has not been shaped yet."

The Kremlin earlier said that it was not expecting a breakthrough before the two presidents meet in person. Fyodor Lukyanov, chair of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policies, a group of Russian foreign policy experts, told the RIA Novosti news agency that it is not yet clear whether Flynn's departure could influence bilateral ties.

"There's nothing to influence yet, there are no relations as such. Our countries have relations shaped by the former administration which were awful, and Trump was going to change that," he said. "But who he is going to change it with — Flynn, or not him, (Secretary of State Rex) Tillerson — it is not clear right now."

I doubt if it was the actual communications with Russia that did for Flynn, LL, more the fact that he was less than honest about the extent of it. After years of trying to get the truth out of Crooked Hillary, I doubt if the new administration is in any mood for endless scandals caused by attempted cover-ups.

A fake tweet looks to have taken in two senior Democrats while they were attacking the White House over former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Both Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat who is the minority leader, and Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Maryland Democrat who’s ranking member of the House Government and Oversight Committee, referenced the tweet made from an unverified account purporting to be Flynn, who resigned Monday night over misrepresenting to Vice President Mike Pence what he discussed with the Russian ambassador.

I find this Russia-hate totally insane, Lily. The Soviet Union is long gone - but ironically, the very progressives that would, and did, sell their souls to touch Stalin's embalmed corpse, are now in hysterics about Russkis under the bed.

Of course the US and Russia are rivals, that is inevitable, but this constant beating of the war drums from the Left in the US is beyond all reason.
