US makes formal apology to Britain after White House accuses GCHQ of wiretapping Trump Tower.

The US has made a formal apology to Britain after the White House accused GCHQ of helping Barack Obama spy on Donald Trump in the White House.

Sean Spicer, Mr Trump's press secretary, repeated a claim on Thursday evening – initially made by an analyst on Fox News - that GCHQ was used by Mr Obama to spy on Trump Tower in the lead-up to last November's election.

The comments prompted a furious response from GCHQ, which in a break from normal practice issued a public statement: "Recent allegations made by media commentator Judge Andrew Napolitano about GCHQ being asked to conduct 'wiretapping' against the then president-elect are nonsense. They are utterly ridiculous and should be ignored."   More at link.

This is an odd business, LL. Someone has been bugging Trump and passing material to the New York Times, among others, and for a change, neither the Evil Russkis nor 4chan are in the frame.

Maybe it was some of Obama's other chums in the 5 Eyes? Like Canada? I don't know, and I doubt if we will ever hear the truth about this.

Donald Trump has deflected questions about allegations GCHQ spied on him, saying he was just repeating somebody else's claims.

In a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the US President was asked whether he regretted tweeting the claim that the Obama administration had wiretapped Trump Towers during the election.

In his reply, he made a reference to claims that Mrs Merkel had been the subject of surveillance by Mr Obama in 2010 and appeared to lay the blame for the original allegation on Fox News.

He said: "As far as wiretapping (gesturing to Mrs Merkel), this past administration, at least we have something in common perhaps.

"We said nothing - all we did was quote a certain very talented legal mind who was the one responsible for saying that on television. I didn't make any opinion on it.

"That was a statement made by a very talented lawyer on Fox and so you shouldn't be talking to me, you should be talking to Fox, ok?..etc.

Nice bit of diverting, but Trump does have a point - Obama was undeniably bugging Merkel, and other European leaders.

It's all very murky.

Even when Hillary Clinton is no longer running for president, laptop "accidents" continue to follow her.

As regular readers will recall, shortly before the election, the FBI revealed that a laptop containing some of Hillary Clinton's emails mysteriously disappeared in transit, while several months later, another laptop belonging to Anthony Weiner just as mysteriously was found to contain emails between his then-wife Huma Abedin and her boss, Hillary. The laptop in question prompted the FBI to reopen its probe into Hillary Clinton's emails just days before the presidential election.

Now, according to the New York Daily News which cites police sources, a laptop computer containing information about the Hillary Clinton email investigation, as well as floor plans for Trump Tower and other national security information, was stolen from a Secret Service agent's vehicle in Brooklyn.

The secret service agent reported the laptop contained floor plans for Trump Tower, evacuation protocols and information regarding the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server. The agent also told investigators that while nothing about the White House or foreign leaders is stored on the laptop, the information on the computer "could compromise national security."

The thief also took "sensitive" documents and the agent's access keycard, though the level of the agent's access wasn't immediately clear.

The laptop was stolen on Thursday morning and authorities have been "frantically" searching for it ever since.

Some items stolen along with the laptop — including coins and a black bag with the Secret Service insignia on it — were later recovered.

But the laptop, along with other documents described as "sensitive," were still being sought.
Describing the theft, the NYDN reports that the thief stepped out of a car, possibly an Uber, on a street in Bath Beach and stole the laptop from the agent's vehicle, which was parked in the driveway of her home. He was then seen on video walking away from the scene with a backpack.

NYPD cops were assisting in the investigation but had scant information on what’s on the laptop, sources said.

"The Secret Service is very heavily involved and, citing national security, there's very little we have on our side," a police source said. "It's a very big deal.”

"There's data on there that's highly sensitive,” the police source added. “They're scrambling like mad.”

Incidentally, I don't believe for one minute that a trained agent somehow 'forgot' to take her laptop, packed with sensitive material, out of her car, just when someone stepped out of an Uber, walked up her driveway and swiped it, and then disappeared.

I don't believe someone (a secret service agent) was that careless either.

Donald Trump says Germany owes "vast sums of money" to NATO, just a day after meeting Angela Merkel at the White House.

The president said the US must be paid more for providing defence in a tweet he posted while at his weekend retreat in Florida.

He reiterated his stance that Germany needs to meet its end of the bargain if it is to continue benefiting from the military alliance.

Be fair now, Donald! Germany owes vast sums of money to all sorts of people, from the looting they did in Greece during WW2, to the shenanigans to keep the euro artificially low, bankrupting smaller nations alone the way.
