Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
It's just a tiny house though, Sabot - and surely the police would have searched the attic? I am trying to avoid being ghoulish, but never mind dogs, I don't know why no-one was aware of it.
Oh, according to Brunt, Hazell is now in custody.

No? They sure did on Wednesday. I really think they would be well advised to keep quiet on the subject of dogs until more is known.

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
Surely there would be a smell of rotting flesh? Hasn't the weather in that part of the south been quite warm recently? Also, why are the police being so reticent over the body? You don't need an autopsy or post mortem to differentiate between a child and an adult. And didn't I read somewhere that the mother is missing, some remark the grandmother made? LL

I gather there has not yet been a formal identification, LL - one of Tia's relatives will have to face doing that.
Her mother's whereabouts are unknown, from what I can gather.
The whole thing is just...odd. It beggars belief that the poor child has been there for a week.

The Police might not have searched the attic on the first occasion, Bonny. Just her bedroom. After that he might have felt that her bedroom was a safe place while they search the whole of the rest of the house. And then moved it back to the attic.

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
Well, at least thanks to a member of the public, they have retrieved their prime suspect.
Again, it's all just conjecture, but Sources are claiming that senior officers are very angry indeed, as this appears to have been a complete ball's-up.
At present, no-one anywhere knows how on earth THREE searches, with dogs, can fail to find a body in a small council house.

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
Thank you, Pedro.
As well as a tragedy, this is, IMO, a complete bl**dy mess. Saturday's papers are just starting to come in:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/tia-sharp-police-find-body-after-third-search-of-house-8030809.html
Quote:
Scotland Yard is facing difficult questions after detectives searching for the missing schoolgirl Tia Sharp found a body yesterday at her grandmother's house, where the 12-year-old was last seen seven days earlier.
Stuart Hazell, 37, who is thought to be the last family member to see her alive, was in police custody last night.
The Metropolitan Police admitted its officers had searched the house in New Addington, Surrey, three times before finding the body, and were now trying to establish how long it had been at the address.
Martyn Underhill, who investigated the murder of the schoolgirl Sarah Payne, said: “It's a basic rule that you search the house where the child went missing.”

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
Hounder playing armchair defective:
He is allegedly a painter/decorator this Hazell chap, so has presumably in his working kit, tape and plastic sheeting? My guess is that some sort of DIY looked a little too fresh. I suspect it was the dogs alerting to a place that didn't look like a place, if that makes any sense.
Oh, so no-one else in the house would notice a wall had suddenly moved? And 'the dogs' DIDN'T alert. One was in today; we have no reports on whether or not it did any woofing. It was some hours later that the child's body was found.

Can these morons not read?
Glitter_Brain @glitter_brain
vIVA peros...without the dogs #TiaSharp s body might have been moved and never found...... Madeleine.... #mccann
The 'specialist dogs' FAILED to find the poor child TWO DAYS AGO. In a tiny council house.
At this point, no-one knows whether today's police dog had anything to do with it or not, or whether she was finally found by a proper forensic search.
It's very telling that their reaction is not sorrow for a young life stolen, hurt for her family, anything - just rubbish about dogs.

Tia Sharp: Salon worker tells how she led police to Stuart Hazell
Friday, August 10, 2012glenn_ebreyFollow
The partner of Tia Sharp's grandmother has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after being spotted by a teenage salon worker.
Stuart Hazell, 37, was detained after 18-year-old Bryoni Goodwin recognised him from TV news reports.
Bryoni, who works at Sculpture hairdressers, in Cannons Hill Lane, Merton, told the Advertiser: "He came in and said 'have you seen my Tia Sharp?' My boss took this at reception. He said 'I am the grandfather' We did not know at the time he was wanted,
"He said he was the grandfather and she went to Raynes Park School, so I'm looking around the area just in case.
"He said all he wants to do is find her in a McDonalds eating a burger, not in a field or woods.
"We said we had not seen her but when I was washing someone's hair, my boss checked the BBC and saw he was on the news and she ran into the shop next door and they said the same thing."
The salon worker then called the police and Hazell was later arrested on the common at Cannons Hill Lane, close to Joseph Hood Recreation Ground.
The area is currently cordoned off, with the police helicopter having been hovering over the site earlier.
The Met Police confirmed Hazell was arrested on suspicion of murder this evening (Friday) at around 8.30pm.
A spokesman said: "Police were called to a public place in Merton at 8.27pm this evening after a member of the public called 999.
"Officers near the scene deployed and arrested him on suspicion of murder.
"He is currently in custody at a South London police station. No updates are expected overnight."
A body was discovered by police searching the house of Christine Sharp - Hazell's partner - in The Lindens, New Addington, this afternoon.
The body has not yet been formally identified but it is believed to be that of 12-year-old Tia, who hasn't been seen since last Friday.

Good job the shop staff had a few more wits about them than the police.

I am sure no-one here needs reminded, but in the UK, trials by the Court of Public Opinion are frowned on, and any charges are up to the police and legal authorities.

I really do think the hounders are going to have to do better than decide the 'wrong kind of dog' was used..dogs don't actually need to be trained to find unpleasant things, to put it as un-ghoulishly as possible.

Pretty typical report:

NEIGHBOURS COMPLAIN ABOUT FAILURE TO SEARCH HOUSE AND WATCH STUART HAZELL
Saturday August 11,2012
By Anil Dawar and John Twomey
SCOTLAND Yard faced a barrage of criticism last night over the handling of the Tia Sharp case.
Neighbours were shocked that it took seven days to search the house where the schoolgirl was found.
Outside the home Tia shared with her parents one girl said: “I can’t believe she was in the house the whole time. It’s just sick. The police are telling us to calm down. It’s all right for them, they don’t know her like we do.” Another man said: “Where were the police? They were all at the Olympics!”
The delay may mean evidence cannot be recovered. The cause of death may be more difficult to establish and signs of injuries to Tia’s body may no longer be viable due to decomposition.
Senior police said 80 officers were working on the case – 40 of them specialist search officers.
Scotland Yard said homes in a 500 metre radius of Tia’s grandmother’s house were searched. But it was tragically clear last night that the house itself had not been fully searched until yesterday afternoon.
Former detectives joined in the criticism, one saying an immediate search of the house was “detective school training stuff”. He said: “You have to start at point A – the last place the missing person is seen. That’s your starting point, not nearby woods or gardens.”
Police had been to the house on a daily basis and a sniffer dog had been brought in days before.
“That’s extremely embarrassing and tragic for any police officer,” he said. “You’re on a missing person inquiry but the subject of it is lying dead just a few feet away.”
Experts said a watch should have been kept on Hazell. “You’ve got to keep tabs on him,” the former detective said.
On Wednesday, Commander Neil Basu said: “I have redirected some Olympic resources to help in the search for Tia. Over the last three days this has meant more than 100 extra uniformed officers.” But police wasted many hours examining CCTV footage for Tia when she was in her grandmother’s house.
Commander Basu last night defended the inquiry, saying: “When police investigate cases as difficult and challenging as this, it is important that we do not just focus on one line of inquiry. For example, we had over 60 reported sightings of Tia, 800 hours of CCTV footage to examine and 300 plus calls into the incident room.”
He added: “A number of searches took place at the address. When Tia was first reported missing, officers searched her bedroom, as is normal practice in a missing persons inquiry.”

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
That was certainly the line being taken last night, Sabot. There were no complicated maneuvres with bodies being moved, the police had relied upon the dogs to alert - which they failed to do on Wednesday.
So, instead of looking in the attic for themselves, the police took the dogs' non-alerting as proof the child wasn't there.
Whether the forensic people found blood or some kind of evidence yesterday, or the smell was finally noticed, is not known at this stage.
It's an appalling business, whatever happened.

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
Found this on Havern's. Yet another Cadaver Dog trained to detect Blood. And I did wonder at one point if one of the dogs had found blood. However, this doesn't necessarily point to Murder, any more than Decomposition does. Or even a dead body.
But I would like to say that The Police weren't wasting time checking CCTV Cameras because Tia could have been abducted.

Re: Manhunt after body found at Sharp home
Until we have police confirmation that it is Tia, the cause of death and when the person died, everything can only be conjecture. There are some interesting things re all this, the number of people who claim to have seen her, the absence of her on any of the CCTV cameras in the Whitgift Centre and in Croydon, the fact that, if the body had been in the house for a week, and the weather has been warm latterly, no-one, and that includes the grandmother, smelled anything - and don't mention freezers! Corpses smell and in a warm closed area, unless they are well wrapped up in plastic sheeting etc they will stink and believe me it is something you can't avoid smelling. That is what perplexes me, the lack of corpse smell. And all the digs I have ever known, from small yappy ones to large rottweillers can smell raw and rotting meat. Re the arrested man, if that had been me, I would definitely have done a fast runner, but he didn't. His picture spread all over the papers, TV etc and he was still around. I believe he was arrested in Morden, which is not very far from Croydon. LL
