The US Secret Service has intercepted a letter addressed to President Barack Obama that contained a "suspicious substance".

The FBI said preliminary tests suggested the letter was tainted with ricin. A law enforcement official said the letter is very similar to one recently mailed to senator Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican. That letter tested positive Tuesday for poisonous ricin.

The official requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

The letters were received at separate facilities that sort mail addressed to the White House and Capitol Hill. The mail facilities are not located on the main White House and Capitol Hill complexes.

Word of the suspicious letters comes amid already heightened tensions in Washington and across the country since the deadly bombings on Monday at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured more than 170. Law enforcement officials haven't said whether they believe the letters are related in any way to the Boston bombings. On Wednesday, there were also reports of suspicious packages at two Senate office buildings.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the letter to Obama was intercepted Tuesday, the same day congressional officials alerted the public to the letter sent to Wicker. Secret Service is working with the FBI, as well as U.S. Capitol Police, on the investigation, Donovan said.

A suspect has reportedly been arrested over the deadly Boston Marathon bombings and is set to be taken to court.

It comes after investigators believe they identified a suspect from CCTV video taken before the attacks, US media reported.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. I suppose....the whole thing was captured on camera from every conceivable direction....so, it might have been possible to reverse the films and see exactly who dropped something at what were to be the centres of the blasts? If that makes sense?

I am watching the coverage on CNN and the latest from the FBI is NO arrests nor do they have the name of the individual of the person they are looking for and the situation is very fluid. As usual someone seems to be upping the ante! LL

The U.S. police have identified a suspect has authored the explosions in Boston, last Monday. The identification was made possible thanks to a video that shows a man put a bag on the street, then fled. Suspicious packages were found on Wednesday in two buildings of the U.S. Senate in Washington, which forced the isolation of some areas of these buildings.

Even though CNN had reported the arrest of the suspect, based on sources of the process, a government source gave the lie that there were already some detained.

The authorities promised to reveal all the details during a press conference that will be held this Wednesday, in Boston, at 17 am local time (21 hours in Portugal).

However, suspicious packages were found in the U.S. Senate. When you leave one of the buildings, Sen. Ron Wyden (Oregon) said: "Apparently there was a package there."

The Capitol Police however confirmed that a man is being questioned.

"Right now, they are interrogating a person, but that person is not in custody. He was not arrested," he said, speaking to French agency AFP, an officer of the police force.

According to the newspaper "The Washington Post", a package was found on the third floor of the Russell Senate Office Building, where employees were advised to avoid the area until further notice.

Another package was detected in the Hart Senate Office Building, having been sent an e-mail to employees to avoid the lobby of the building, according to the same newspaper.

The U.S. secret services reported this Wednesday that a letter containing a "suspicious substance" was sent to U.S. President, Barack Obama, further indicating that the envelope was received on Tuesday by the postal House white.

Already on Tuesday, U.S. officials indicated that they had been detected ricin, a deadly poison, in a letter to Republican Senator from Mississippi (Southern United States) Roger Wicker.

The letter was detected during a routine inspection of a building outside the Capitol, so it did not enter the premises or in the office of Senator.

These letters and suspicious packages were detected at a time when the U.S. raised security levels after double bombing in Boston (Massachusetts, Northeast) who made three dead and over 170 injured. Those responsible for the blasts, which occurred on Monday, have not yet been identified.

MIT Campus Police Killed in Campus Shooting

(CAMBRIDGE, Mass.) — A police officer for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been shot and killed at the campus outside of Boston, authorities said early Friday. No arrests had been made and a manhunt was on for the shooter.

The officer was responding to report of a disturbance Thursday night when he was shot multiple times, according to a statement from the Middlesex District Attorney’s office and Cambridge police. It said there were no other victims.

MIT said on its website that police were sweeping the campus in Cambridge and urged people to remain indoors until further notice. People were urged to stay away from the Stata Building, a mixed use building with faculty offices, classrooms and a common area.

The shooting came little more than three days after the twin bombings on the Boston Marathon that killed three people, wounded more than 180 others and led to an increase in security across the city.

The shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building, according to state police spokesman Dave Procopio.

The officer, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead from his wounds.

About 11,000 people attend the prestigious university.

Do you know, it hadn't really hit me until I saw the photos of the two suspects. And now I feel really ill. But it looks like they've got them. One arrested and the other on the run after shooting a policeman.

Latest: one suspect has died in hospital after what appears to have been a gunfight, the other one is on the loose, police say he is armed and very dangerous. Report that the men threw explosives at the police. People in Cambridge, Mass and Waterton told to stay indoors. The dead suspect is the one in the picture with the black hat. LL
