I wasn't going to post on this thread but I see the French are banging the war-drums. LL
France’s Plan of Attack in Syria
Analysis from Slate France.
By Eric Le Boucher|Posted Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at 4:04 PM

French President François Hollande might be President Obama's only military ally in Syria.

“Punishment” against the Damascus government, as French President François Hollande put it, would consist only of aerial strikes on military units that have used chemical weapons, according to a source in the French Cabinet. Chemical ammunition warehouses would be spared in order to avoid uncontrollable explosions. The militaries of potential coalition forces believe they know exactly where these warehouses are.

Therefore, it’s not a question of attacking Syria’s entire army, as was done against Saddam Hussein’s army in Iraq and Muammar Qaddafi’s in Libya. Hollande made that clear in an interview in Le Monde.

The idea is “punishment,” in the French president’s words, or “a shot across the bow,” to use the American president’s phrasing, in response to Bashar Al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons, particularly on Aug. 21, which undoubtedly resulted in about 1,000 deaths. Western forces don’t want to destroy Syrian airplanes, tanks, or command centers—destruction that would surely change power dynamics on the ground—they just want to send a reminder that chemical weapons are a “red line” for the international community.

Military forces will be ready to strike by Saturday, Aug. 31, but the strikes will probably be postponed because of the British Parliament’s having vetoed an intervention. The Labour Party said no to David Cameron to live down Tony Blair’s participation in attacking Saddam Hussein alongside George W. Bush. The challenges and failures of the Iraq intervention cost Blair dearly, and Ed Miliband, the current Labour leader, clearly wants to rehabilitate his party’s image in the eyes of a public very reluctant and skeptical of the benefits of this kind of operation in the Arab world.

Foreign affairs minister Laurent Fabius spent lots of time on the telephone Thursday trying to convince Miliband to soften his position and to make only reasonable demands of the Cameron government in the Commons. If London doesn’t go to Syria, Paris can go—or so Hollande says—but to intervene alone with Washington would be seen as the opposite of what’s happening in Britain: the French government making a fool of both its own Parliament and the United Nations. And if America intervenes unilaterally, Europe will once again appear powerless and spineless.

France should therefore take its time and find a legal basis for action. In other words, we must expand the consensus on a strike, propose a resolution to the U.N., and clearly show that it has made every effort to get it adopted. Experts who have been on missions to Syria must also very quickly appear before the Security Council to testify about what they’ve seen: Such testimony could be sufficient legal grounds. All this could take a week to 10 days.

Funny how none of the war-mongers can produce anything resembling proof, LL. And now this:

http://news.sky.com/story/1136479/russia-two-missiles-fired-in-mediterranean

Russia: Two 'Missiles' Fired In Mediterranean
A missile early warning system identifies two launches heading towards Syria - although no signs of explosions have been reported.

Russian radar has detected two ballistic "objects" fired towards the eastern Mediterranean from the central part of the sea, the country's defence ministry has reportedly said.

Interfax news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying the launch was detected at 10.16 am Moscow time (7.16am UK time) by an early warning radar station at Armavir, near the Black Sea, which is designed to detect missiles from Europe and Iran.

The Russian Embassy in Syria said there were no signs of a missile attack or explosions in capital city Damascus

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had informed President Vladimir Putin of the launch, according to Interfax.

"The trajectory of these objects goes from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea toward the eastern part of the Mediterranean coast," Interfax quoted the spokesman as saying.

Russia opposes any outside military intervention in the Syrian civil war and a ministry official had earlier criticised the United States for deploying warships in the Mediterranean close to Syria.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said they were not aware of any missile launch in the eastern Mediterranean.

"We are not aware, at this time, of such an event having occurred," she said.

Sky News' Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall said: "There is very little information available, but the most likely explanation would be that the US is test firing some of its ship defence systems."

========

No prizes for guessing which trigger-happy morons would do that. Frankly, it's the US that is looking more and more like the rogue state - and that's something I never thought I would say, but their conduct over Syria disgusts me.

The BBC News has said that Israel admitted to the launch of a rocket so they could test their defence systems. As Assad has issued threats against Isarel if the USA attacks Syria they are on extremely high alert and are tesing both Iron Man and David's Sling defence systems. LL

...........Many analysts had assumed the strikes would be fairly limited in scope.

But Gen Jack Keane - a retired US Army vice-chief of staff who spoke to key Republican senators after a White House briefing on Monday - told the BBC they had been given the indication that strikes would go far beyond targeting Syria's alleged chemical weapons.

And this has just appeared on Sky:

The US has a plan to help Syria's rebels bring down the Assad regime after launching military strikes, President Obama has said.

More follows...

Someone, please arrest Obama for treason. He is actually planning to overthrow a secular regime and arm Jihadists, cannibals, priest-killers and Al Quaeda, courtesy of the American taxpayer. And thereby guarantee that minority Muslims, Kurds and Christians in Syria who are currently protected will be massacred.

PS- How would he feel if Mexico launched an attack on Texas because it didn't approve of the way the Feebs handled the Waco siege?

Is there nothing in this headline that tells Obama what a dumb idea this is?

http://www.foxnews.com/index.html

FOX NEWS FIRST: Despite Obama's promise to arm Syrian rebel forces after first use of chemical weapons in that country's civil war in 2012, no US equipment has reached Islamist fighters backed by administration, report says.

There really is a Big Clue in that story.....

Just listened to the radio interview in your link, Bonny. It sounds so controlled and rational and then you think about what the reality will possibly be.

The crazies who cannot be controlled by the West aka unintended consequences. Then what?

They're insane, Lily, I can see no other explanation. I suggest Obama cancels any 9/11 commemorations this year, as courtesy of the US taxpayers, he is about to arm and otherwise aid the very people who were behind it.

I don't have the words for my disgust at him over this - never mind the implications for the Middle East and the wider world.

How many Syrian civilians, minority Muslims, Christians and Kurds has he just sentenced to death? Shameful. mad

If Barack Obama decides to attack the Syrian regime, he has ensured – for the very first time in history – that the United States will be on the same side as al-Qa’ida...- End of story!

I can see the way this is going down in the States, Lily - like a lead balloon. It's insanity, self-destructive insanity at that. Has Obama learned nothing from history? Does he even know what 'history' is - that that region has been at war for thousands of years?

Eta, that the only time it quietens down is when there is someone rather horrid in charge who can keep the warring factions under control?

Let's go back almost a week. Cameron, Hague and co were spouting off about how only limited airstrikes were planned, before the Commons thankfully kept the UK out of this.

Were they lying to the Commons, or did Obama lie to them, as he is making it clear now that he wants regime change?

Am not sure if that was as planned then, Bonny. However, it makes a person think that they were just handing out sound bytes to make it more palatable? Then when involved and some of the *cough* unintended circumstances happened, come back and say they had no alternative but to xy or z because of new events?

Don't know.

And who is it Omaba imagines is going to be on the receiving end of his missiles? Poor bl**dy Syrian soldiers, who are ALREADY defending their country from the murderous barbarians Omaba is supporting.

The cannibals, Jihadists and priest-killers must be delighted - the President of the US has given them the green light to slaughter even more innocent people.

Why isn't Obama outraged about civilians having their heads sawed off with breadknives? Why is he even thinking about helping savages who eat their enemies' internal organs?

If Kerry wants to see scary things on YouTube, he should take a look at the atrocities being committed by the very people he and Obama are now supporting.

It utterly disgusts me. I am just as sorry for the ordinary US citizens who are not only going to be expected to pay for this betrayal, but who can look forward to getting their sons and daughters home in body-bags, with limbs missing, etc - all because Obama wants to play Macho Man, instead of acting like a statesman.

As the Obama administration's national security team prepared to make its case to Congress for a strike on Syria, and President Obama spent his morning doing the same in private meetings, it appears the key phrase being employed as their rationale for a missile attack is "it's in our national security interest.

From the UN

http://www.voanews.com/content/un-chief-discourages-further-militarization-of-syria-conflict/1742713.html

Margaret Besheer
September 03, 2013

UNITED NATIONS — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging a political solution to the crisis in Syria, saying Tuesday that military force is legal only when it is in self-defense or is authorized by the U.N. Security Council.

The U.N. chief is headed to the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, where Syria is certain to top the agenda.

Before departing, he told reporters he appreciates that U.S. President Barack Obama is consulting his Congress before launching any military strikes on Syria, following a suspected chemical weapons attack on August 21 near Damascus that killed hundreds of people. Ban added that he hopes any action is handled in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

“The use of force is lawful only when in exercise of self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and/or when the Security Council approves such action. That is the firm principle of the United Nations,” said Ban.

Ban said that if confirmed, any use of chemical weapons “by anyone, under any circumstances” would be an “outrageous war crime.”

While he said there should be no impunity, he also called for nations to consider the impact of any punitive measures and said further militarization of the Syria conflict should be avoided.

He said the turmoil in Syria and across the region “serves nobody” and he appealed for renewed efforts to convene a political conference in Geneva as soon as possible.

A U.N. team of scientific experts has just returned from Syria and Ban said the biomedical and environmental samples they have collected would be at laboratories by Wednesday for analysis.

The team, which spent two weeks in Syria, is mandated with determining whether chemical weapons were used in Syria, but not by whom. The focus of the investigation shifted from earlier allegations of chemical weapons use to the suspected gas attack at Ghouta near the capital August 21.
