Re: Gardening Thread.
You can imagine the numbers in one month then?
Will this sink into their skulls that the people are sick of paying foreign aid and being duped themselves? Maybe it's time for them to rethink how they treat the very people who pay their salaries?

Frantic families fight over 'gold dust' sandbags: Desperate homeowners plea for more after 'shambolic' floods response
Guards had to be posted to protect deliveries because of looting
Many complained they arrived too late as homes were already swamped
A landlord in Datchet, Berkshire, labelled the provisions a 'disgrace'
Keith Sanders, 78, had to defend a substation because from thieves
Around 1,600 troops were deployed across Southern England last night

Fighting over sandbags in leafy Tory suburbs - unbelievable. Ah well, Margaret Thatcher was fond of preaching that there's no such thing as society, and now we can all see it in action.

http://news.sky.com/story/1210542/wraysbury-ea-staff-removed-after-abuse
The Environment Agency has removed staff from flood-hit Wraysbury after they suffered abuse, the GMB union says.
A spokesman for the union, Justin Bowden, lays some of the blame with Communities Secretary Eric Pickles for the hostility towards EA workers in the Berkshire village.
"This report of hostility from the residents on the Thames is a direct result of the irresponsible attack by Eric Pickles and others on the EA," he said.
"His incitement has led to the very people on the frontline who are actually helping to alleviate the situation bearing the brunt of people's frustrations."
"For more than seven weeks since Christmas the Environment Agency's staff have been run ragged helping and supporting the victims of flooding. GMB members have been working double and triple shifts around the clock to protect and assist.
"It is noted by these staffs that the Prime Minister has repeatedly refused to say the proposed cut of another 1,700 jobs at the EA will be reversed."
Efforts to deal with the flooding have been overshadowed by a bitter clash between ministers and the Environment Agency, after Mr Pickles issued a barbed apology for relying on its advice to the crisis.
Wraysbury has been heavily hit by the floods and is among the communities warned that the flooding may cause danger to life.

Re: Gardening Thread.
I don't blame people for being angry, Lily, watching this from a dry-ish distance, it's a complete and utter shambles. The great and the good have been shamed into action by Prince Charles, the Sikh community and Sky News - and the fact that now, the Tory heartland is going under water.
But the environment people at ground level have been doing their utmost to help, practically - the fat cats in offices are the ones who should be on the receiving end.
I wouldn't be surprised if parts of London itself aren't under water before much longer, the flooding and chaos seem to be spreading.

Re: Gardening Thread.
I wonder if some at the top will be asked to resign after this is all over? I appreciate that those at the low levels are doing what they can and what they are told to do.
The people of Wraysbury are exhausted after battling alone for too long. I don't think leaving those people to continue on was the correct thing either. It's understandable that they were angry but do you know what constituted abuse?

Re: Gardening Thread.
I haven't seen any mention of what actually happened, Lily.
Of course the people at the top won't resign; if it gets too hot for them, they will just be moved to a Eurocrat job with a fancy title.

Re: Gardening Thread.
People must love to have the inefficiency shuffled off elsewhere, Bonny. As it is, that guy gets around 170,000 pa for a 3 day work week?
They talk about value for money?
The people have a right to be angry and the Union and the EP have the duty to try to work out the solution with the people. It's a communication breakdown and everyone is worn out? Pickles and Smith have a lot to answer for IMO.
How is the weather where you are?

No idea where the rumour we are leaving #Wraysbury came from. We are still here & residents are fantastic. Helping them as best we can do.
.@youngy0102 Staff were advised by police on Monday to leave after they were vebally abused. We are now back & working with the community
============
Good it is resolved. Phew was really concerned for those people.

Re: Gardening Thread.
A spokesperson for Oxfam said: “We wouldn't respond to an emergency in the UK.
“It's the sixth richest country in the world and the government has said there is enough money to cope.
"We only intervene in countries were there is no infrastructure or resources and people would die if we didn't go there."
And for how much longer do they think the infrastructure in the flooded areas in southern England is going to function? This is turning into a UK version of Katrina.
The water is coming out of the ground; sewage is coming UP toilets, etc.
