Re: Gardening Thread.
Bonny, I thought a couple of days ago that this could be the UK's Katrina - so I think you are right. That's what it seems to be turning into. The help WAS NOT THERE then and it awaits to be seen if it will be in the UK.
Yes, there is structural damage and it will become more apparent as time goes on. Yes, there is filthy water which people will not be able to drink etc and that will become apparent. There is sewage water added into the mix and where are they pumping dirty water from and to where?
There seems to be something wrong with some of those er 'charity' types?

Re: Gardening Thread.
That's a disgraceful remark to make - and why the HELL is the UK giving anything to nations with space programs, like India?
People are getting angrier by the day; the fall-out from this is going to be spectacular.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Oh, and what's not helping one bit is the growing evidence that the Somerset flooding was as good as deliberate to suit the Green lobby.

Re: Gardening Thread.
This isn't just a disaster, it's also gross negligence. I don't really know how it all began beyond the fact that the rivers weren't dredged because some bunch of pillocks decided it didn't need to be done. But it is basic common sense that water won't flow away properly if the rivers are silted up with a load of crap.
Or am I over simplifying this?

Re: Gardening Thread.
No you're not Sabot. Obviously it is not just dredging that needs to be carried out but that is a step in the right direction.
growing evidence that the Somerset flooding was as good as deliberate to suit the Green lobby
ORLY Bonny? My oh my........
When you think about this.....a large amount of money is required from the people? They are already taxed too much. So, in order to make them cough up, make them think it is something they are responsible for? Is it something like that Bonny?
I will stand to be corrected, obviously.

No, it was to do with providing wetlands for birds.

Re: Gardening Thread.
From where did The Environmental Agency get it's funding? Did they perhaps just want a little flood along the river banks, sort of.
Although this isn't the first time there has been a problem. Just not quite so bad as this.
I just don't understand it. Rivers need to be clean for what wild life that lives in rivers.

Depressed mussels? Why aren't they farmed for food, to give them something to be depressed about?

Re: Gardening Thread.
Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary Ed Davey has used the floods crisis to launch an extraordinary attack on ‘diabolical’ and ‘wilfully ignorant, head in the sand, nimbyist’ Conservatives who question climate change.
He insisted the disaster that has befallen much of England demonstrates ‘the possible consequences of a world in which extreme weather events are much more likely’.
Mr Davey said climate change denial and Euro-scepticism are a ‘diabolical cocktail’ that threatens efforts to tackle global warming.

What a complete arse! Are the EU and 'global warming' some kind of new religion, and anyone who doesn't worship at their altars heretics?
The climate changes constantly, and it is stunningly arrogant to think that humans single-handedly cause it.
PS - whatever happened to the Hole In The Ozone Layer?

Councils Charge Flood-Hit Families For Sandbags
Councils are limiting the number of sandbags they give to residents suffering floods, with some people being forced to pay
So much for Cameron and money being no object. What a surprise!

Re: Gardening Thread.
The Mirror's take on this is a bit different. LL

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/flooding-sandbag-bandits-charging-flood-3139989
Sandbag bandits are charging flood victims up to £50 a sack as councils struggle to keep up with demand.
Police said bags are being swiped from outside people’s homes in Surrey and there are reports of them being sold on for £10 to £50 each.
Neville Wooden, 88, of Egham, was hounded on his doorstep by rip-off merchants demanding £25 for four bags.

That about says it all - many people are scared to leave their property because of looters, and who can blame them?
There's a distinct air of panic and spreading chaos coming from the Thames floods. And why haven't the Gurkhas got waterproofs? They're wading in that filthy water without even wellies.

Never mind though. Stiff upper lip as they can take pride knowing that they send around 12 billion GBP in overseas aid every year.

It doesn't seem to be working this time, Lily, not least because no-one actually seems to be in charge. Sky News seems to be the main means of communication right now.
Perhaps Cameron should declare martial law in the Thames area, let the Gurkhas and Sikhs deal with anyone caught looting or stealing sandbags?

That would be better than what he's got at present. Will he make sure they are properly equipped first? Wellies are not that expensive, are they?

Re: Gardening Thread.
Weren't you shocked that photos of the military who were helping were not wearing wellies? Although he backtracked, the PM did say that money was no object.
The clean up, repair and defense operation will cost in the billions so he must be okay with that?

I got the impression that the military were sent in to give the impression that Cameron was Doing Something - anything.
Now, undeniably they will make a difference, but I find it pretty shocking that no-one thought about their footwear. That water is filthy, it has sewage, oil, God knows what else in it.

Re: Gardening Thread.
It appears many political types look like they may not be very practical? Used to phoning people to do it for them?
Yes, the military will get a lot done. Can you imagine the operations that will be needed when the floods subside? Is that when heads might roll?
