My stairs are very steep, Bonny, so I can't actually get any of them down the bloody stairs. I once had to drag Romulus down the stairs by his neck. And we both suffered.
Yep, I would have a dog on my bed, and bugger the mud and horror. But they have to effing get down again. I can't carry them.
I once had this LLasa Apso, and she could get up and down the stairs. I never had a problem with her. Or the bloody cat.
But I have had too many nice Cats killed on the road. I just can't cope with that anymore.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Looks like much of the US is in for some very cold weather again:
Explosive superstorm more powerful than Hurricane Sandy batters Alaska – setting off polar vortex that will blast U.S. with snow and temperatures as low as -34C next week

Arctic blast: An explosive storm will cause temperatures as low as -34C (-30 degrees Fahrenheit) to sweep across the U.S. next week. Above, predicted temperature departures from normal from November 13 to 18
It's still just wet and windy here.

Re: Gardening Thread.
We've had enough rain for three months here in the last three days. Most of it in the footwell of my van, because I forgot to cover the bonnet gap.
But that's normal for The Vallee du Blavet. And at least Brittany doesn't have a water problem. We have never had a hose pipe ban in twenty years.
Still warm enough to stave off putting on the heating, but then what I think is warm is often different to others. And 200 Pounds Winter Fuel Allowance doesn't go that far. It actually barely covers the cost of ice in my Gin during the Summer.

So, it never rains in Vienna? But I just don't pay too much attention. I am, thank God, eternally healthy.
It is of no importance that both of my knees are shot. I did one of my knees in when I fell off a horse, and the other one when I was racing around in a Triumph Spitfire and having an affair. Chasing Pheasants and Rabbits in the middle of the night. Oh what glorious fun we had. All in Scotland.
Now, I just handle my bad knees. They both have good memories, and I am not sorry. I would have to negate every bad thing I ever did if I ever cared about that. And it didn't seem bad at the time.

Re: Gardening Thread.
I am referring to where I actually live, ma petite, we have little rain here and very short winters, last year we had exactly 7 days of snow and no ice to speak of. Vienna does get rain, snow and ice but nowhere as much as the UK gets. LLSabot wrote:Lamplighter wrote:No way, José!! No arthritic crises, very little pain and Vienna just a drive away. Heaven!! Don't cut off my posts, Sweet man. There is a bit more than the weather to do with it. We are all getting old. Some of us manage it better than others. But always by chance.

Re: Gardening Thread.
All that I managed to grow this year was Flowers yet again. But you can't eat flowers. I don't know why I go on trying to grow vegetables. I have never been any good at this.
The Bay Tree is definitely going to get seriously topped very shortly. I never use Bay Leaves, so God knows why I grew it. It is ever the most boring thing. And it cuts out the light. Bye Bye Bay Tree.

I like them Sabot. They are great in some dishes. Mine typically die.
I'll swap you a banana tree (with fruit) for it.

I grew mine from a cutting, Lily. Actually, I am probably just going to Bush it.
Spent the afternoon hacking at my own grown Quinces, also grown from a cutting.
Bloomin Hell, talk about hard work getting the peel off and the cores out. But they fairly quickly simmered down into superb Quince Jam, or Quince Sauce. Please yourself which. The taste is really nice and nothing like Apples. They seem to go to jelly very easily.
Next year I shall chuck a few crushed up Cloves in.

A certain amount of sugar and water, Bonny, but not that much of either. And not that long to cook. I expected them to go to slush so I left them to cool off, and half an hour later they were solid jam.
Not much like anything I have ever tasted before, but really nice.
They are not a very attractive fruit and quite hard work to prepare, so I suspect they get neglected. But not by me ever again.
They are also in bush form, very good ground cover. Not many weeds grow underneath them. Bright red flowers in early Summer, so pretty with it.
I feel as thought I have discovered a hidden bonus.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Yes, a cold front has arrived from...somewhere or other. It may even be the US, as the East Coast had bad weather about a week ago, I think?
I saw one US reporter announcing that one of the main airports was struggling because of what he described as, A nasty mixture of rain, snow and hail.... I instantly realised, That's sleet!

Yes, Bonny. They don't say sleet here. There was a horrid storm which caused more havoc than usual although I wouldn't know.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Absolutely horrible weather today - I gather it's the 'weather bomb' that hit NE America last week.
http://news.stv.tv/scotland/302803-ferries-cancelled-after-wet-and-windy-weather-batters-scotland/
STV weatherman Sean Batty said: “It’s going to be a very unsettled week, with stormy conditions on Wednesday.
“Winds will pick up across the country during Tuesday afternoon with heavy rain spreading east. Gales are likely across the north and west, with severe gales or even storm force winds by Wednesday in the far north.
“The storm system has a very long and straight north-westerly fetch all the way from southern Greenland. This will bring a very large swell and heavy seas to the north and west of the country.
“The waves could top sea walls and wind could peak with gusts up to 80mph in north-western areas. The winds are expected to ease slowly during Thursday as the storm centre drifts towards the Norwegian coast.”
