Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
Thanks, LL. So it would be appropriate if I'm fending off plague carriers down at the local Intermarche or Bar Tabac.
I am pleased to discover that I've learned something really useful during my sojourn here.
PS. What's a Bagel?

A bagel is a bread product, traditionally shaped by hand into the form of a ring from yeasted wheat dough, roughly hand-sized, which is first boiled for a short time in water and then baked. My favorite style of bread roll. LL

You should be able to buy them chez vous, they are a Jewish invention. Maybe in a town rather than a village, or somewhere like Carrefours. You slice them open, spread cream cheese on them, top with lox (smoked salmon) and enjoy! LL

Thank You, LL.
I buy Lidl's excellent cheese topped rolls, which I toast, for my smoked salmon. But I will try a Bagel if I see one.
Not going to the big city till I get my burka and beak. But I've got my sword stick at the ready if anyone comes to the front door.
Bugger. Just remembered that I double kissed the frozen food delivery man this morning. He's my BFF, you see. Don't know his name so I shall have to ask him, if I'm still alive the next time he calls.

Ebola Outbreak: Four Quarantined In Spain
As the number of people placed in quarantine in Madrid grows, EU chiefs demand "clarification" from Spain over the virus' spread.
The Madrid nurse who became the first person to contract ebola outside of Africa is being treated with antibodies from survivors of the illness, hospital officials have revealed.
Four people, also including the nurse's husband, have been placed in quarantine at the hospital over fears they may have the deadly virus.
She was part of a medical team at the city's La Paz-Carlos III hospital that treated two Spanish missionaries who died shortly after returning from Africa with the disease.
A nurse who also helped treat the infected priest is among the four being monitored by health workers, as is a man who arrived on a flight from Nigeria displaying symptoms.
Spain's health authorities say a total of 22 people are thought to have been in contact with the 40-year-old nurse, whose name has not been released but is in stable condition.
They say that although she began a holiday after one of the missionaries she had been caring for died on 25 September, she did not leave Madrid during this time.
Spanish officials say she began feeling ill on 30 September and was diagnosed with ebola on Monday.
EU countries have demanded an explanation from Spain's health minister as to how the the nurse caught the disease, despite all the precautions taken
An EU spokesman said the letter sought "to obtain some clarification" from Spanish authorities, adding: "The priority remains to find out what actually happened."
Spain's health minister, Ana Mato, says an emergency protocol is in place and that authorities are working to establish the source of the contagion at the Madrid hospital.
"We are working to guarantee the safety of all citizens," she said.
That is extremely bad news. A nurse incubating Ebola, wandering around a European capital, comes under the general heading of, OH, SH*T.

Hmm, don't know what to say, except we can be pretty sure she caught it from someone. Not much help, I know, but what on earth do they think they are doing?
You catch Ebola from coming into contact with someone who's got it.

Ah, but we know who she caught it from - the priest that caught it in Africa, and was flown home to die. That's not the mystery; the mystery is how she caught it despite using every possible safety precaution. The big worry is that it may become airborne.

That's what I meant, Bonny. But surely it must be airborne. A cough or sneeze is airborne. You don't have to climb into bed with them.
Too bloody late now, if you ask me.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
As if to emphasize his priorities, President Obama has ordered thousands of American troops to go into Ebola-stricken Liberia, disregarding the dangers to those troops and to other Americans when the troops return.

Sending thousands of troops in is, IMO, insane, Lily. Other nations have sent doctors and health professionals, who have been of great help. But troops? In such numbers? It's an appalling decision, and I would not blame a single soldier that deserted on being given such an order.

"As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." -H. L. Mencken (1920)

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/07/us-military-personnel-on-ebola-mission-to-handle-blood-samples/?intcmp=latestnews
Quote:
The U.S. military mission to combat Ebola in West Africa is facing questions about the serious health risks American troops will encounter in heading to the epicenter of the deadly outbreak.
According to officials, a small group of trained military medical technicians on the ground will not be required to make direct contact with patients infected with the Ebola virus. However, they will have to handle infected blood samples, which Pentagon officials acknowledged Tuesday could be just as dangerous, if not more.
Already, three mobile-testing labs, staffed by three or four technicians each, have been deployed in Liberia as part of Operation United Assistance, the U.S. military's effort to combat the Ebola virus. Four more labs have been requested.
Pentagon officials say the service members on these small teams are the only individuals who will be intentionally handling any raw material that could be infected.
Look at that weasel word 'intentionally'. If the 'small teams' get swamped, then GI Joe will HAVE to handle the raw material.
Also, troops aren't famous for being happy to be confined to barracks. How are they going to be prevented from socialising with locals? I know no-one in their right mind would want to, but young men have never been known for their common sense.
I find this latest decision by Obama horrifying and it's impossible NOT to see some malign purpose behind it. I wouldn't blame the troops one bit for refusing to obey.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
Some small comfort, Lily, yours isn't the only nation currently being run by idiots:
This is how a spanish hospital is isolating an ebola-infected nurse
Quote:
"It was reported at the outset that no protocols or realistic training to address this situation because they are procedures for which you must train: you can not teach a person to put on a suit that costs so much to put it in 20 minutes , "
Who needs conspiracy theories when crises are being dealt with by complete morons?

Ebola Dead Abandoned On Streets After Strike
Workers stop rounding up the dead and demand their pay, saying they don't care if bodies are "littered all over the city".
Ebola victims are being left on Sierra Leone's streets because of a strike by burial teams, according to media in the country.
The workers, who arguably have one of the world's most dangerous jobs, complain they have not been paid.
The situation is "very embarrassing", said health ministry spokesman Sidie Yahya Tunis.
He promised money was available for the workers.
"We haven't been paid for two weeks, so we need our money right now," said one angry worker.
"We don't even care if dead bodies have been littered all over the city - all we want is our money. We've been stigmatised in our communities, so let the government pay us our money."
Sky's Alex Crawford saw first-hand the extreme precautions burial teams in the region have to take as they retrieve corpses.
She said teams in neighbouring Liberia - the worst affected country with more than 2,000 deaths - were overwhelmed, with "not enough hours in the day for them to track down the dead".
Any temporary halt in collection only adds to the risk of further infection because the virus can stay on the bodies, said Sky's Health Correspondent Thomas Moore.
More horror at link.
Mind you, I seem to recall that 'plague nurses' and grave-diggers reacted in the same manner in London in 1666 - you don't pay, we don't aid or collect.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
Look now, this has to be air borne. It would simply not have been possible for so many people to have become infected otherwise. They can't all have been in direct physical contact with each other in the beginning. Families, perhaps, but not other people on the streets.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
I won't pretend to know much about horrid infectious diseases, Sabot, but I think at least one strain of it is airborne. The CDC and similar 'experts' aren't helping one bit, with their constant declarations that everything is under control, which generally leads to another disaster by the end of the day.
And governments and 'experts' have caused so many foul-ups, that when they say there is no need to panic, the wisest thing to do is...panic. Especially if you've read The Stand.....
