Army bomb disposal experts have moved an unexploded World War Two device found near Wembley Stadium and plan to detonate it this afternoon.
The military was drafted in to defuse the explosive, which they have said poses "a genuine risk to life".
Weighing 50kg, the bomb is thought to have been dropped during Nazi raids in the early 1940s and was unearthed by builders working near the stadium on Thursday.
It triggered the evacuation of around 300 homes and businesses, including the studio in which Britain's Got Talent is filmed, outside a 400m police cordon.
Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Mickey Gallagher said more than 70 people had been looked after at an evacuation centre and most should be able to return to their homes and businesses on Friday evening.
I think it's pretty clear how it got there:
Royal Logistic Corps disposal teams from Northolt and Ashchurch excavated the Luftwaffe Sprengbombe-Cylindrisch general purpose bomb.
I really don't think that 'thought to have been dropped during Nazi raids' applies. I can't think of any other way it would have got there....

A long, unobstructed bomb bay meant that the Lancaster could take the largest bombs used by the RAF, including the 4,000 lb (1,800 kg), 8,000 lb (3,600 kg), and 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) blockbusters, loads often supplemented with smaller bombs or incendiaries. The versatility of the Lancaster was such that it was chosen to equip 617 Squadron, and was modified to carry the Barnes Wallis-designed Upkeep "Bouncing bomb" for Operation Chastise, the attack on Germany's Ruhr Valley dams. Although the Lancaster was primarily a night bomber, it excelled in many other roles, including daylight precision bombing: in the latter role some Lancasters were adapted to carry the 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) Tallboy and, ultimately, the 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) Grand Slam earthquake bombs (also designed by Wallis).[4]
Those were HUGE bombs, even by modern standards of destruction.

Didn't they find a bomb when they were digging the Jubilee tube line? And as I remember many unexploded bombs have been found over the years in Greater London/suburbs. LL

Yes, it happens fairly regularly - from earlier this year:

And, of course, in Germany, too. And it doesn't always go right:
Germany is mourning the loss of three bomb disposal experts killed yesterday by a 2,000lb World War II aerial mine.
Three others were seriously injured by the explosion which occurred when a bomb disposal team was cutting through the acid fuse of the bomb buried 24ft down in the university city of Goettingen.
Fire brigade spokesman Frank Gloth said, 'Evacuation measures were far advanced for 7,200 people in a wide radius from where the bomb lay.

Re: You couldn't make it up....
The bomb which went off in Goettingen is of a type containing a vial of acetone which bursts on impact and is meant to trickle down and dissolve a celluloid disk that keeps back the cocked firing pin that then ignites the TNT inside.
Hans-Jürgen Weise, one of Germany's most experienced bomb disposal experts, retired two years ago after four decades spent making Germany cities safe.
He warned in 2008 of the danger of rotting detonators. 'The last few years we’ve found that the detonators we take out of such bombs are increasingly brittle.
'We had three extracted detonators go off with a pissssh sound while they were being transported away, all it took was a bit of vibration.
'One day such bombs will be so sensitive that no one will be able to handle them.'

Those bombs dropped by Lancasters were huge by anyone's reckoning.
It's quite chilling thinking about all those UXBs dropped.

There is unexploded ordnance all over Europe, Lily. Not just WW2 bombs, but shells from WW1 are still turning up in Belgium and France - and just about anywhere between Berlin and Moscow, from both wars.

WW1 bombs still a serious danger
20 March 2014 Last updated at 13:35 GMT
The danger of handling unexploded World War One ammunition was demonstrated on Wednesday when two Belgian workmen were killed by an unexploded shell which was dug up on a building site.
More than a billion shells were fired in the conflict and as many as 30 percent did not explode. After spring ploughing on the former battlefields of France and Belgium potentially lethal ammunition is brought to the surface.
Despite the dangers, there is an illegal trade in this lethal ammunition. Some "collectors" search for the shells, defuse them at home and then sell them at collectors markets.
Angus Crawford visited one area in eastern France which was the scene of fierce fighting. Historian Maarten Otte showed how common the remnants of potentially dangerous ordnance are in the area.

It is, IMO, wrong to think of all this as ancient history, Lily. From unexploded bombs to arbitrarily-drawn national borders, people are still suffering and dying because of events 100 years ago.

TBILISI, Georgia – Tigers, lions, a hippopotamus and other animals escaped from the zoo in Georgia's capital after heavy flooding destroyed their enclosures, prompting authorities to warn residents in Tbilisi to stay inside Sunday. At least 12 people have been killed in the disaster, including three zoo workers.
An escaped hippo was cornered in one of the city's main squares and subdued with a tranquilizer gun, the zoo said. Some other animals also have been seized, but it remained unclear how many are on the loose. Bears and wolves are also among the animals who fled from their enclosures amid the flooding from heavy rains and high winds.
There were no immediate reports that any of the fatalities were due to animal attacks. The zoo said one of the dead was Guliko Chitadze, a zookeeper who lost an arm in an attack by a tiger last month; the Interfax news agency said her husband also died in the flooding.
As of mid-afternoon Sunday, it was unclear how many animals remained on the loose or what species they are.
"Not all the animals who ran away from the zoo have been captured. Therefore, I want to ask the populace to refrain from moving about the city without" an urgent need to, mayor David Narmania said.
A full accounting of what animals were missing wasn't immediately possible because a large part of the zoo remained underwater, zoo spokeswoman Khaati Batsilaishvili told The Associated Press.

CNN Mistakes Sex Toy Flag for ISIS Flag at Gay Pride Parade
The cable news network aired an "exclusive" report after one of its international reporters claimed she saw terrorist propaganda during the London event.
CNN reported Saturday that a man was flying an ISIS flag at London's gay-pride parade, but it turned out to be a banner covered in sex toys.
CNN International reporter Lucy Pawle called in to the network after spotting the flag.
She reported that a man dressed in black and white "was waving what appeared to be a very bad mimicry but what appeared to be a very clear attempt to mimic the ISIS flag, the black-and-white flag with the distinctive lettering."
But both Pawle and her CNN colleagues, including anchor Suzanne Malveaux, don't seem to notice that the flag actually consists of images of dildos and butt plugs, rendered in the style of ISIS. Even Pawle noted the writing on the flag wasn't in Arabic, adding "It looks like it could be gobbledegook. But it’s very distinctive, the ISIS flag.”
"I seem to be the only person who has spotted this, and nobody seems to be raising any questions," Pawle added, saying that neither event organizers nor the police knew about the flag. She suggested later that it might be a "subtle" joke.
"It was very subtle and us Brits known for our subtle sense of humor but I'm not sure that everyone, if they had spotted it, might have thought it was particularly amusing," Pawle added, with Malveaux saying, "it may be a parody."
CNN also brought in national security analyst Peter Bergen for its "exclusive" report. Bergen seemed puzzled by the sight, saying that it's unclear who was waving the flag or what his motivations were and repeatedly noting that a gay-pride parade is a strange place to wave an ISIS flag given the group's anti-gay views.
Malveaux at one point wonders out loud if the flag could be a warning of a London attack: "This is our next location, this is our next attack," she suggests.
Internet commentators quickly pointed out the gaffe.
In response to tweets mocking her report, Powle wrote, "I reported no such thing." However, she did retweet those who identified what was really on the flag.
