The German Chancellor's decision to open her arms to a million migrants is about to be tested as Germans head to the polls.

It has been dubbed 'Super Sunday'; judgement day for Germany's leader as one in five Germans head to the polls in regional elections.

Voters in three states are casting votes today in elections widely seen as a test of how the German people really feel about Angela Merkel's policy to welcome refugees.

It was early September last year when Chancellor Merkel made a decision that would become the most controversial of her decade in office.

She was watching television images of hundred of refugees stuck at Keleti station in the Hungarian capital on their odyssey through Europe. Her decision was made: they were all welcome in Germany.

It was a moment of moral conviction; a decision made with almost no consultation. She didn't ask her electorate and she didn't tell her fellow European Leaders, with the exception of the Austrian chancellor.

Mrs Merkel had set in motion an experiment based on her assumption that the European Union which she champions would stand together in solidarity for those seeking help away from war. ...etc.

Her 'experiment' went badly wrong then, didn't it? Horrible, bullying, corrupt creature.

A SUSPECTED car bomb has detonated in the centre of Berlin, killing at least one person.

The blast struck at 8am local time in the Charlottenburg neighbourhood, leaving parts of the car strewn across the road.

Police believe the explosion was caused by a device inside the vehicle although the exact cause is still being probed.

The Volkswagen estate exploded while it was driving through rush hour traffic heading in the direction of the city centre...etc.

From early reports, it looks like the asshole blew himself up before he got to whatever - or whoever - was his intended target. So, no loss there, and no innocent people harmed.

Strange area to attack - the main big attraction is the Berlin Opera House and the area is very affluent, I think he/she was on their way to possibly a more obvious target, perhaps the Reichstag, which has many foreign embassies close at hand. LL

Police do not believe there was a terrorist motive to the explosion.

Berlin police sealed off the area. Bomb experts were also on the scene investigating whether there were any further explosives and officers told residents in the area to stay indoors and keep their windows shut.

Local media reported officials saying that it was not believed to be terror attack but an organised crime hit. The driver is believed to have started the car and drove a few metres before it exploded.

My kids' god-dad, who is in law enforcement, say that organised crime is more than likely the cause - there is a large criminal element in the eastern part of the city who are controlled by 'bosses' who live in areas like Charlottenberg and there are deep resentments and rivalries between them. LL

Lily, the Berlin police seem to think it is gang-related and could be that an 'execution' was arranged, the bomb in a car scenario being a well-known way to wipe out a rival gangleader/member, an old Mafia routine. LL

German newspaper Bild now reports the victim was known to police as being involved with drugs and violence, and the killing is being potentially linked to Berlin’s immigrant drug gangs. The car is reportedly registered to a woman with a “Turkish sounding name”.

Explosion under car killed convicted Berlin drug dealer

Police say that an explosive device placed under the car killed a Berlin man as he was driving in the west of the city on Tuesday morning.

The blast occurred during peak-hour traffic on Bismarckstrasse, within sight of the Victory Column monument, leaving the front of the car severely dented after collided with another car, while debris was strewn a few metres away.

Eyewitnesses told Tagesspiegel that the driver initially managed to escape from the car but then collapsed due to his severe injuries. Attempts on the part of emergency services to resuscitate him proved futile. At 8.40 am he was announced dead. No one else was injured in the incident.

“We suspect that it was an act of homicide carried out by placing a bomb under the car,” Berlin prosecutors told Bild newspaper.

The Berliner Zeitung reports that the victim was Mesut T., a 43-year-old man.

Prosecutors confirmed to Bild that the victim had previous convictions for drug dealing, falsifying currency and illegal gambling.

Police say they believe the attackers came from the world of organized criminality. Earlier on Tuesday they said there was no indication terrorism was involved.

Yep. Everyone's immediate reaction was 'terrorism', which was probably what the crooks were hoping would be the case which would then give them a chance to cover their tracks while the bomb squad searched for the 'jihadists'. But their plan seems to have come unstuck. LL
