Jeremy Corbyn has been warned Labour’s biggest hitters will not return to his frontbench team unless he brings back shadow cabinet elections for MPs.

The Mirror understands Mr Corbyn’s team hope to lure at least six former shadow cabinet members back to the fold if he retains the Labour leadership as expected this month.

Back-channel talks have been underway for several weeks between the leader’s office and former frontbenchers who quit en masse in June following the EU referendum defeat.

Jeremy Corbyn has called on companies to end after-work drinks, claiming that "early evening socialisation" benefits men while discriminating against mothers.

The Labour leader made his comments at an early evening event which launched a document detailing how Mr Corbyn's flagship 10 pledges would advance gender equality for women, and tackle gendered violence and harassment.

Following the event, held at Unison's offices, a drinks party was held.

According to Mr Corbyn an after-work drinks culture "benefits men who don't feel the need to be at home looking after their children and it discriminates against women who will want to, obviously, look after the children that they have got".

Labour crushed in Sheffield by-election just weeks after Jeremy Corbyn rally attracted thousands



Labour suffered a crushing defeat in a local by-election tonight, losing a seat just three weeks after a Jeremy Corbyn rally attracted thousands of supporters.

The election was to replace Councillor Isobel Bowler, a longstanding and popular Labour councillor in the Sheffield Ward of Mosborough, who died in June.

In May, Labour won all three seats in the Ward, with the Lib Dems languishing in fourth place behind Ukip and the Conservative Party.

But in tonight's by-election, Both Labour and Ukip's votes collapsed, and Lib Dem candidate Gail Smith won on an 11 point lead.....etc.

Crushed by the LibDems - how humiliating for Jezza.

Labour also lost a by-election in Maidstone tonight, where Ukip retained their seat on the council. Labour also held seats in Maidstone and Mansfield.

Labour MP Louise Haigh described the Mosborough result as "devastating."

It’s like he’s trying to prove he could destroy Labour faster than Corbyn…

We are long past the point where there is any value in trying to figure out what exactly it is Corbyn hopes to achieve other than shaping the Labour Party as a permanently unelectable left-wing sect. His shambolic leadership, his banalities and his weasel-words when confronted with unpalatable details of his political life paint a picture of a man who is both an idiot and an ideologue (an idiologue?).

But there was something entirely fitting about this tiresome event. Corbyn is currently breeding, among his supporters, a new wave of thwarted 54-year-old men who will, one day, sit in pubs on Wednesday afternoons and explain that they were done wrong by the powers-that-be.

The wide-eyed Corbynistas of today are the pub bores of tomorrow. When their man leads Labour to inglorious defeat, they will not examine themselves, they will not question Corbyn’s actions. They will sit at the bar and say that the establishment had it in for them from the start.
