When I watched this on the news last night, I immediately thought they would have not received any permissions for anything there.  

No common sense anywhere, it seems.

It's appalling, Lily, made worse by being entirely preventable. You can see from all the photos that the place was a death trap.

It's not just the building's owner who should go to jail, IMO, so should the city officials who did nothing to shut it down.

What can we expect from a possible bunch of fruitcakes?

I am afraid I prefer fire chiefs who keep a stiff upper lip and a calm head in horrible situations, to one who starts crying on camera. Though possibly she was crying because she knows that this is down to her department's failure to enforce the law - and the buck stops with her.

The more I read about that death trap, the more horrified I am, Lily. I'm one of those people who always checks where emergency exits are when I go anywhere new - I wouldn't have set foot two yards in the door of that dump.

It's absolutely tragic that some of the victims were in their teens, but others were in their thirties, supposedly grown up enough to have a bit of common sense. Accidents are bad enough, but this was completely avoidable, IMO - especially if the fire officials had done their job weeks ago, instead of worrying about gender quotas.

Meanwhile, in a separate report by the Detroit News we learned that in a parallel development the Michigan recount hit a major snag today, as Wayne County officials indicated that as many as half of Detroit’s precincts may not be eligible to participate in the recount. Under Michigan law, a precinct can't be recounted if the poll book and ballot box numbers don't match, unless there is a valid explanation. In such cases, the results from the original election night tally stand.

In the clip below, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum explains how entire voting precincts may be non-recountable in the presidential election recount that began Monday in Ingham and Oakland counties.



The officials announced that they are not yet able to reconcile 392 of the 662 precincts in heavily Democratic Detroit. A total of 610 out of 1,680 precincts in Wayne County cannot currently be reconciled. Comments by Detroit officials suggested that nobody is quite sure how to proceed in light of the widespread problems:..etc.

A magnitude-6.5 earthquake was reported early Thursday off the coast of Northern California.
The quake, downgraded from its initial magnitude of 6.8, was about 100 miles off the coast of Eureka, California, a city of about 27,000 people 100 miles south of the Oregon border. Shaking was reported along the Northern California coast, including Ferndale, Eureka and nearby seaside communities.

Donald Trump has spoken to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to discuss Scotland's "long-standing relationship" with the US.

The Scottish Government described the phone call as a "brief introductory conversation".

"The First Minister offered her congratulations and, reflecting on the letter she sent him following the election, expressed her belief in the values Scotland and the United States share," it said in a statement.

"The First Minister and the President Elect also discussed the longstanding relationship between Scotland and the United States."

Trump called Sturgeon today. She was apprehensive about calling him given what she'd said about him. Apparently he was gracious towards her.
