Re: Gardening Thread.
Have you ever noticed that even after a Torrent, the earth is still dry below about half an inch?
Not here it ain't
Temporary hault has been called to pruning as I managed to stick the pointy end of the garden shears in my arm, and am now trying to remember when I had my last tetanus shot
It's a pity water can't spread itself out a bit better, Sabot - Spain and Portugal are going up in flames, and we're squelching in the stuff.

Ouch! I hope you are okay, Bonny.
We don't get rain here except a tiny bit around the start of the year. I am relieved and happy to say that the temps seem to be dropping down to 110 F.

Well, it always is here, Bonny. And have you ever taken a trowel to see? I mean, who bothers? We all imagine that a deluge will saturate. But it doesn't.
I don't know why certain places get benefit while others don't, but I expect that there is a purpose, probably because Planet Earth needs to recover what ever it can, fairly easily. Planet Earth has no need to deal with a Species We are nothing. We are just here.
Until you can see Planet Earth for what it actually is, then you wouldn't know.
Planet Earth doesn't care about the likes of us. We are just a passing phenomena.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Southern England is catching up, Lily:
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/experts-predict-scorching-saturday-165450039.html
It was the hottest day of the year so far on Saturday as temperatures soared across the nation.
Most of the UK enjoyed temperatures in the high 20s, but at Cavendish, in Suffolk, the mercury reached 31.7C (89.06F), eclipsing the previous high of 31.4C (88.5F) recorded at London's Olympic Park on July 25.
Much of East Anglia and the South East of England saw the hottest temperatures with Charsfield in Suffolk basking in 31.4C and Santon, Downham, recording temperatures of 31.3C (88.5F). And the baking heat looks set to continue on Sunday, said Gareth Harvey, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the Press Association's weather division.
No doubt there will be thunder and lightning by Monday.

And you are doing an incredible job, sabot. Moi, I had to go and get some coffee, just to keep awake for a bit longer. LLSabot wrote:

It's very nice with Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Or Rhubarb and Custard.

Re: Gardening Thread.
I see there are indeed ground elder recipes, Sabot:
http://nami-nami.blogspot.co.uk/2008/05/ground-elder-and-vanilla-muffins.html
The comments are interesting - I suspect it hasn't managed to swamp the US yet?
I think it was introduced into the British Isle by the Romans as it was supposed to cure gout, or something?
Invasive isn't the word, Lily - you just cannot get rid of it. You may think you've dug out every last speck of it, but you haven't, it'll be back as soon as you turn your back on it.

Really? I had no idea there were recipes, Bonny. I was actually joking, but there isn't much you can't eat.

I'm sure there must be a use for it where you are, Lily. Maybe it could bind sand together, or something?

Does it require much water? If not, it could be a winner.

Ah well, that's the heatwave over. It's raining again....
Lily, as the dratted stuff can grown through concrete, or so it feels, I am sure it would thrive in the desert. Nothing else would, but at least it would be green.

Re: Gardening Thread.
One of my SunFlowers is not behaving according to the norm. It has got it's face permanently turned away from the Sun.
But the four others are behaving as they should.
I am now into Clean Up Mode and preparing for Winter. I know it's a bit early but it is easier to do this a bit at a time.
My Runner Beans have produced about five pounds of Beans from eight plants. I am content with this.
The French Beans were a bit of a waste of space. Hardly any Beans at all.
Not a single solitary Tomato. This has never happened to me before. Even if they did all turn to mush from Tomato Blight, I did at least have a couple of weeks of hope.
But, guess what. I have been meaning to buy more Strawberry Plants, but balked at paying 2 Euros a Plant. And then out walking with my dear old Boy I found loads of Strawberry Suckers growing outside someone's gate. So I helped myself to a few. Just the Suckers, not the Plants. All potted and growing now. Saved myself about 30 Euros. They probably won't produce next year, but I can wait.

Well done, Sabot, you've been a bit more successful than me. I am contemplating a rice paddy for next year.

English Runner Beans like lots of water, Bonny. Scotland does have a similar strain of Runner Beans. They are called Ecosse something.

A rice paddy would be unusual, Bonny.
We could read posts about runner beans and strawberries next year by Sabot and the types of rice that grow better in Scotland.
Looking forward to it.

Re: Gardening Thread.
It will soon be Chrysanthemum time here, Lily. When I go mad and but loads of cheap Chrysanthemum plants, grown for All Saints.
Last year I did buy a rather expensive one for 5 Euros, but it is now almost in flower and looking really good, so possibly worth the extra money. Normally I wait until after All Saints and then pay 1 Euro.
