God bless the Qatari merchant navy....
It might be time for Cameron to think the unthinkable, reopen the coal mines and build more power stations. He would solve several problems at once that way, and as far as I can make out, Britain's contribution to any supposed man-made 'climate change' was miniscule anyway.

Re: Gardening Thread.
It's not just the snow, LL. The temperature is sitting about 0c - 2c, which is unpleasant but not unendurable. It's the wind chill, a howling gale from Hell, or at least the Arctic steppes, is blowing too, making it feel much colder.
I am heart-sorry for the guys trying to get power back on to the worst-hit areas. You can see how badly some areas have been hit:
Struggling: A barn opposite the Stanley Arms in Macclesfield, Cheshire, is almost completely buried by a giant snowdrift after a night of high winds causes more havoc

Re: Gardening Thread.
I know what you mean, bonny, we are lucky in that we are south, on a line with mid-Italy and just off the Croatian border. But even here we are having a bad time, usually we only get snow in late December, January and early February. This is far later than usual, though we don't have any wind, thank goodness. Also the ground wasn't frozen when this started so it's lying on the paths and is brushable. LL

Re: Gardening Thread.
It hasn't rained here for TWO WHOLE DAYS. And it's been around 8 to 10 degrees. But minus 2 degrees tonight, and for the next three days. I don't care if it snows or not
The Broad Beans are doing fine
Finally got most of one half acre lawn cut. Not funny as I had to do it in three goes. Do I really need the money?

Re: Gardening Thread.
I am not complaining but I just want to say that we have had one day last week and today of strong downpours and thunderstorms. It makes a lovely change for us but it is just a bit weird.
Now, send us some of that snow and cold air. Thank you.

Effing Raining Again.
But I thought you all would like to know that the perfectly acceptable cheap Lasagne that I buy, and which was 1 Euro 58 centimes two weeks ago has now gone up to 2 Euros 50 centimes.
What I suspect has been happening is that they mince up big Vats of individual types of meat during the course of a day, and don't steam clean the Vats between each type of meat, because it isn't necessary. So you get left over residues accounting for about 1%
Thank you very much, and bye bye cheap dinner.

Re: Gardening Thread.
I think what's been in lasagne in the UK is a bit more serious than that, Sabot, I'll never eat one again.
I am happy to report that we have had a few dry days, and though it's chilly, we have
Everything's well behind, though. Mind you, it was warm this time last year, and it was downhill all the way after that.

On a lighter note, or not. Buds on The Wisterias. Please God, no more frost.
Buds on The Lilac which my son cut down over two years ago. But something had to be done about it because it was blocking the light.
The two Clematis are looking good. I cut those down to two feet every Winter because it says you should.
Wey Hey. Summer is a coming.

Yes, Lily. Just not quite so cheap. But honestly, it was really good before. So God knows what all of the fuss was about. This price is for 1 Kilo of Lasagne.

I did check the Ingredients Label on the old ones, Bonny, and it said 1% of other Viandes, in French, of course. And they were both bought before the big fuss broke. But The French are not generally liars and deceivers, so I wouldn't have expected anything else.
However, you have always been able to buy various qualities of these products, which do vary in price. A middle of the road Lasagne, made with Pur Boeuf is about 5 Euros the Kilo.
It's the poor families that I worry about because their food bill has just gone up.
So far, there have been no incidents of anyone dying from eating Horse Meat. In fact, if you've ever been into a Meat Market in Portugal you can buy a whole skinned Horses Head if you want to. And if you've never bought a Cows Head then you don't know what you have been missing.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Well done on the gardening front. Sounds like you are going to have lots of blooms, Sabot.
Bonny, you will get there.
First blooms on my gardenias, arabian jasmine and plumeria/frangipani bushes. All so fragrant and appreciated.

No, honestly, the meat from a Cows Head is amazing, And dirt cheap. The french eat a lot of stuff like that, but then so do I. They even eat Pigs Ears, although I haven't felt motivated to try those yet. But they are all there on The Butchers Counter. So no reason that I can see for an 'orses 'ead not to be as good.
And Pig's Brains on toast, I would die for.. Been eating them since I was twelve years old.

It's not amazing if you don't like meat, and only ate the occasional Findus lasagne because you assumed the 'meat' was soya protein with an Oxo cube waved over it....not one of the fallers from Doncaster races.

And where pray, did you think the Oxo Cubes came from. Apart from that, what would you do with the fallers from The Doncaster Races? Bury them?

Tins of Pal, I thought.....
I just don't like meat, Sabot, I've never been a big meat eater. I wouldn't thank you for a sirloin steak, I'd rather have some nice Brie and olives.
I do enjoy seafood and, bizarrely, prosciutto occasionally, which is definitely animal....

Re: Gardening Thread.
We don't get it cold here, Sabot, except some light snow on rare occasions, in the mountains.
We did have some excitement last week at night. We had these massive howling gales, sand swirling and whooshing like I don't know what, and lightening overhead that lit up the whole of the area as if it were mid-day. Went on for several hours.
It was so good to watch. Well it does make a change from heat. Sun. Humidity. etc.

Re: Gardening Thread.
Bonny, I am grossly allergic to most carbohydrates. I should not eat bread or potatoes or anything containing wheat because they make me feel ill and they make my face swell. This has not done much good to my face over the years. So even forgetting my face, if I wish to wake up in the morning feeling half all together then I have to stick to meat and vegetables.
I cannot eat Tree Nuts or Seafood because they make me vomit, and I finish up doubled over in agony in the middle of the night. A couple of months ago I ate FIVE Walnuts and was wishing I was dead by morning.
This is all incredibly boring, and no one believes me anyway. There are times when I don't eat at all because I don't know what set off the last the reaction. And I don't want to feel ill.
Fortunately, I don't appear to be allergic to alcohol. But that is no answer.
