Re: General news from Portugal
CM has catalogued a series of PSP ‘misdemeanours’ in recent years, all of them involving male agents: in 2009 a uniformed officer ‘kidnapped’ and assaulted an 82-year-old woman, in 2014 another was caught stealing from a supermarket in Lisbon and in December last year a policeman from Amadora was caught stealing two cheeses from Minipreço. - See more at: http://portugalresident.com/psp-policewoman-caught-on-camera-shoplifting-during-day-off#sthash.IvlsFtV9.dpuf

Cable hiding drug fortune head of Military PJ Torres Vedras is a key player in the whole scheme.
The cable head José da Silva, the GNR, would be a figurehead of Ricardo Macedo, trying to hide the illicit fortune of the Chief Inspector of the Judiciary, obtained in a corruption scheme that ran for favoring drug traffickers.
The military was the bridge with trafficking networks, who took the precious information that Macedo gave him about acting, or lack of it, of PJ - and paid the luxury expenses of the man who coordinated one of the main sections of combating trafficking .
a life that was not compatible with just over 2000 euros of salary of a chief inspector of the PJ, despite more than 30 years of service.
And what passed for luxury travel to destinations like Brazil, which were paid by the friend of the GNR of Torres Vedras, a property and money in the bank, all in the name of the military, who did the dirty work of Macedo and was working as treasurer .
It was the military who went directly to dealers the information was getting from his friend Macedo - on how to trafficking networks to circulate their drug in Portugal without being bothered by PJ - receiving in return thousands of euros for services rendered.
After distributing money by Ricardo Macedo and Dias Santos - PJ coordinator has already retired and would be the brain of the corruption scheme, the old links to traffickers from their service times.
But in the case of Macedo, due to the fact of being still active and can not display outward signs of wealth in his name, was the cable of GNR José da Silva who kept his money paid by traffickers.
Dias Santos, retired with mobility, less exposed - even though his name was the subject of complaints by corruption for years - not avoided displaying signs of wealth. Everything was spent fine-tooth comb by the Unit for Combating Corruption and framed, for example, wiretapping.

Eight Treasury inspectors arrested for corruption.
Suspects were arrested by the Judicial Police.
Eight heads of Finance, with functions in the Tax Authority, are among the fifteen arrested this morning by the Judicial Police for corruption and falsehood computer crimes.
The rest are businessmen and at least one lawyer, found the CM on suspicion of having paid bribes to the first to obtain various benefits within their tax liabilities.
active and passive corruption to tort, improper receipt of information advantage and falsehood are the crimes involved in Operation "Tax Free" in which they were detained 15 people, including employees of the tax authorities, informed the PJ.
Under the operation, said the Judicial Police, there were 120 searches in the region of Lisbon, aimed "to the consolidation of evidence" for the 15 detainees, among whom are officials, lawyers, business officials and accountants.
According to PJ, the operation resulted from a "complex and undercover investigation" of the National Anti-Corruption Unit (UNCC) that police, in collaboration with the Tax Authority (AT), and mobilized more than 200 members of the Judicial Police and judicial and public prosecution magistrates.
Detainees will be heard in the first judicial questioning for the application of enforcement measures. RMP identified the suspects.
According to the Attorney General's Office, among the suspects are technical tax administration, tax inspectors, finance chiefs, a director of services of the Tax Authority, a director's assistant finance, a member of the Center for Fiscal Studies and Customs, lawyers, certified accountants and businessmen.
"At issue are alleged links have been established between some suspects, officials of the Tax Authority, and official accounts technicians, lawyers, businessmen, other service providers in the tax area and taxpayers who show themselves willing to pay monetary amounts or other amounts to that they be provided tax information, bank or property of third parties and tax advice, "stated the press release from the PGR.
The Ministry of Finance confirmed the mega-operation that involves searching the offices of Finance and said that the Tax Authority is working with the Judicial Police.
"The ongoing operation is being carried out with the collaboration of the Tax Authority assisting the criminal investigation of the Judicial Police in this process," said source in the Ministry of Finance to Lusa.

Re: General news from Portugal
Portuguese victims of human trafficking soar
BY TPN/ LUSA, IN NEWS · 12-05-2016 14:08:00 · 0 COMMENTS
The number of Portuguese citizens suspected of having been victims of human trafficking abroad more than tripled last year, with 58 cases officially reported, according to the Observatory of Human Trafficking (OTSH), an offshoot of the Ministry of Internal Administration.
The organisation’s 2015 report indicates that 58 Portuguese were identified as presumed victims of trafficking abroad, 43 more than in 2014. Two of those cases involved minors.
The report does not specify how many cases of suspected trafficking were confirmed, on the grounds that the data is covered by “statistical secrecy”.
According to the OTSH, most of the cases of Portuguese being trafficked abroad (48) involved exploitative employment practices, particularly in the agricultural sector.
As in previous years the main destination is Spain (45 cases), in particular to farms in Navarre.
According to Spain’s Ministry of Interior, 28 percent of all 134 victims of employment exploitation of this kind identified in Spain last year was in agriculture.
Situations involving trafficking for adoption, sexual exploitation and some other purposes are covered by statistical secrecy, the report states.
That's an odd one.....
Thank you, Pedro, some interesting stories there!

Re: General news from Portugal
It is not a surprise, but the numbers are impressive. In the last 100 years, Portuguese men have gained, on average, 13.9cm, while Portuguese women have grown, again on average, by 12.5cm.
The findings comes from an international study which analysed the height of 18.6 million people in 200 countries, born between 1896 and 1996.
The research showed that the tallest people in the world are Dutch men (measuring an average of 182.5cm) and Latvian women (169.8cm).
But Portuguese counterparts have made leaps and strides.
In 1914, for example, the average height for men here was only 159cm.
With the last averages taken in 2014 (172.9cm), the data shows that these days Portuguese women are on average taller than men were 100 years ago.
Measuring just 150.5cm on average in 1914, Portuguese women are now nudging the measuring sticks at 163cm.
But it still leaves us at 75th position worldwide with many more ‘notable’ results peppering the findings, published in eLife scientific magazine.
What is interesting among the more predictable conclusions is that “greater height is associated with certain types of cancers such as colon, breast and ovarian cancers”.
For the full report on “A century of trends in adult human height”, see: http://lens.elifesciences.org/13410/index.html
That's an odd one, Pedro. Has the typical Portuguese diet changed a lot? More protein, or something?

Re: General news from Portugal
bb1, with all do respect, I don´t see nothing odd here, exactly the opposite, which is a good thing, it means that the Portuguese truly cares with their health, which is being improved through workout in gymnasiums, also with a more careful behaviour regarding food. I watched yesterday the news about this issue, and it was mentioned that due to workout in gymnasiums, also due to being careful with the type of food, the Portuguese have become taller.
