The Algarve’s environmental agency (APA Algarve) is warning people to stay away from clifftops after a huge rock fall took place at Praia da Luz on Wednesday morning (October 14).

“Luckily no one was hurt, but people must be aware that cliffs are even riskier when it rains,” APA Algarve president Sebastião Teixeira told the Resident.

Photos of the impressive rock fall were sent to us by reader Jackie Dawson.

“At the largest point of the cliffs, the rock face completely collapsed with a huge roar falling into the cove and sea at the end of the beach,” she said after witnessing the scene.

Teixeira told our newspaper that maritime police have closed off the area around the rockfall, and that it is expected that the sea will clear away the debris.

“This is how nature works. It’s a natural phenomenon that becomes more common during the winter. These kinds of cliffs can experience rock falls even five days after it has rained,” he explained.

Woman helps child trafficking

SEF stopped Angolan of 43 in Amadora.

The Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) arrested on Wednesday an Angolan, 43, on suspicion of co-authorship of a child trafficking crime.

In a statement, the SEF said that the detained is from the family of a woman who was caught in September at the border post of Lisbon airport. the suspect also from Angola, came to Luanda with a girl of 6 years. The woman claimed to be mother of the child and wanted to come to France with her.

Alliance of socialists and communists brings down centre-right coalition weeks after general election

Portuguese MPs have forced a minority centre-right government to resign after rejecting its austerity policies less than two weeks after it was sworn in.

The coalition of the prime minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, had emerged as the largest party in a general election on 4 October but lost its outright majority in a public backlash against austerity measures adopted following a €78bn bailout in 2011.

The vote to bring it down follows the moderate Socialist party forming an unprecedented alliance with the Communists and their Left Bloc allies, giving the grouping 122 seats out of 230 in Portugal’s parliament.

The Socialist party’s internal political committee announced late on Sunday that it had recommended its MPs support a motion to take down the government.

PJ captures mafia in Portugal
