As news spread that the gunned down policeman was a Muslim, the hashtag #JeSuisAhmed began spreading on Twitter in solidarity. One user, identified as @Aboujahjah, said: “I am not Charlie, I am Ahmed the dead cop. Charlie ridiculed my faith and culture and I died defending his right to do so.”

Two French nationals attempted to cross Hungary to reach IS

In December two French male youths attempted to cross Hungary with the intention of reaching the Middle East in order to join the Islamic State, the head of Hungary counter-terrorism centre (TEK) told commercial broadcaster TV2 on Thursday.

Janos Hajdu said that the centre had received information about the French nationals, and on this basis they were detained at the Hungarian-Serbian border crossing of Kelebia and handed over to the French authorities. He added that this had not been an isolated or single case.

Hajdu said he did not know of any Hungarian national with a similar aim as the Frenchmen.

Last November a young Dutch female was stopped attempting to join the IS at the same border crossing.

Orbán presses for new means of defense for Europe

Prime Minister Viktor Orban called for a new policy, pointing out the need in Europe for new means of defense and stabilisation to prevent upheavals and movements that threaten security, in a declaration issued on Sunday.

The declaration was sent to MTI by Bertalan Havasi, Orban’s press chief, before a Hungarian delegation left for Paris, to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attacks there. The delegation included Justice Minister Laszlo Trocsanyi and the head of Hungary’s Counter-Terrorism Centre Janos Hajdu.

Expressing his sympathy, Orban said the advance of terrorism in Europe is a reality today, and one that is growing day by day. European people are under attack, as well as their freedom and way of life; all of this threatens the security of our everyday life, he said. We cannot allow ourselves to fail to look the matter in the eye, he added.

Europe must be able to protect itself, Orban said. Political correctness no longer offers protection against savage barbarism, he added.

Hungary has committed itself to protecting European values and will play its part, on its own strength, in this struggle of vital importance, Orban said. It has come to light that the current European policy is incapable of protecting European people, he added.

Thus a new policy is required, Europe needs new means of defense and stabilisation to prevent upheavals and movement that threaten security, he said.

“We Hungarians are prepared to cooperate with any such European political force that proposes a solution and wants to fight against these new threats,” Orban said.

Orban is joining other heads of government and state at an anti-terror rally in Paris on Sunday involving more than one million people. In addition to commemorating the victims of the attack on the satirical paper Charlie Hebdo, the participants aim to stand up for freedom and democracy, and against terrorism.
