Re: 10 KILLED IN PARIS-shot dead UPDATE Fri morning more DEAD in shootout
Just another day for the religion of peace:
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/11/child-suicide-bombers-nigeria-market
After a week of bloodshed unleashed by Islamists Boko Haram left hundreds of civilians dead across north-eastern Nigeria, Ibrahim Abu wanted to try to forget. He and three friends had met for tea in an outdoor bar beside an open-air market in Potiskum, a small town in Nigeria’s Yobe state, when an explosion threw them to the floor.
“I looked up and saw body parts everywhere, then the body of a little girl cut in two,” he said, his voice still shaking as he recounted the incident. As traders scrambled around him, he felt paralysed with shock. The body of another child was being pulled out of the rubble. By the end of the afternoon, three other people were dead and 26 wounded.
The bombing by two suspected child suicide bombers in a crowded market on Sunday capped a week of horror and marked an ominous escalation in violence with elections in Africa’s most populous nation less than five weeks away.
A day earlier in neighbouring Borno state another young girl, who is also believed to have been about 10 years old, was stopped for a security check in the capital’s main market when bombs strapped to her detonated, killing at least 16 people.
Residents across Borno were already reeling after Boko Haram militants rampaged through remote villages for almost four days in what Amnesty International and the Nigerian army said was the group’s deadliest attack.
In Baga, a fishing settlement on the shores of Lake Chad, fleeing residents were unable to count the bodies that littered the fields. Amnesty put the number of dead at 2,000, although it didn’t say how it had verified the number. Other estimates suggested 600 was a more likely figure.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/01/12/kerry-announces-planned-paris-trip-says-criticism-for-missing-march-quibbling/
Secretary of State John Kerry called criticism that no top U.S. officials attended Sunday's massive march against terrorism in Paris "quibbling" Monday, even as he announced a trip to the French capital later this week for talks on countering Islamist violence.
Kerry announced his plans at a press conference in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, where he had made a long-scheduled appearance at an international investment conference Sunday ahead of President Barack Obama's planned visit to that country later this month.
"I would have personally very much wanted to have been [in Paris]," Kerry said, "but couldn't do so because of the commitment that I had here and it is important to keep these kinds of commitments."
When asked about criticism directed at the Obama administration for not sending a high-ranking official to take part in the march, Kerry said, "I really think that this is sort of quibbling a little bit in the sense that our Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland was there and marched, our ambassador [to France Jane Hartley] was there and marched, many people from the embassy were there and marched."
Nuland, in fact, attended a march in Washington.
Too late; the damage has been done. If not Obama himself, then a senior member of his administration should have been front and centre yesterday.

United world leaders in Paris today... But what exactly are they all looking up for?
Trying to spot Air Force One?

Sad. So unfair on The American People. But it all sounds like cowardice to me, on the part of Obama. Just about everyone else turned up, albeit in possible fear of being shot or blown up.
This was never going to happen, of course. It simply won't have occurred to The Terrorists that so many people would stand together against them.
And if they had tried anything then they would have been torn limb from limb.
Not that I approve of physical violence you understand.

Well then, Obama needn't be surprised if no one turns up to support America if America needs it.

I am tending to agree, Sabot. I cannot think of ANY other good reason for the US no-shows. The only other thing I can think of is that Obama was sulking because the French dealt with things so perfectly themselves, without any 'help' from him or Holder.
Now, I know perfectly well that all those leaders marching was a bit of political theatre, but it did send out an important message. The King and Queen of Jordan, Netanyahu, Cameron, Merkel, Lavrov, etc., would all have been massive scalps for the crazies to take - in many ways bigger than Obama, because let's face it, he's easy to replace with another empty suit.
He needs to explain himself, and sharpish. Either he and his administration did not support a millions-strong march condemning terrorism or he and his administration were too cowardly to attend.
And I am none too sure which is worse.

I doubt if many French people have forgotten his disgusting display of bad manners at the D-Day commemorations, Sabot, with the gum-chewing, etc.
Or if the Dutch have forgotten his Apocalypse Now helicopter gunship arrival in their capital for a conference, when their own PM arrived by bike.
I find him a disgrace to his high office, and I am deeply sorry for the US military with him as their Commander in Chief. I doubt if they will forget him saluting them with a coffee cup in his hand:

I'm a bit worried about the possibility of Obama being a Muslim. Could this have anything to do with his No Show?

Okay, why not send Bill Clinton? Despite all the scandals he is popular in Europe. Or either GHW or GW Bush? Jimmy Carter? There are 5 Vice Presidents still alive, Walter Mondale, George Bush (not sure which one), Dan Quayle, Al Gore and, if push comes to shove, Dick Cheney. Any of these would have been better, surely than second and third rate diplomats. LL

Unfortunately, he really did do that, in full view of the cameras, Sabot. On a previous occasion, he saluted the helicopter guard with one hand while talking on his cellphone with the other.
He really is one of the rudest, most arrogant creatures ever to sit in the White House - and he's incompetent with it.
He probably thinks these niceties don't matter cos he's The Prez. He doesn't seem to grasp that they matter very much in Europe and the Far East (remember the gum-chewing at a State occasion in China?) where ceremonial, diplomatic behaviour has evolved over centuries - since before America was even 'discovered'.
The US no-show yesterday sent out an appalling message to the world, though the crazies doubtless took some comfort from it.
Agree, LL, one of the ex-Presidents would have filled the bill if Obama couldn't or wouldn't attend. Jimmy Carter is respected world-wide these days thanks to the fine work his charitable organisation has been doing since he left office.
And yes, whatever he gets up to in private, Clinton at least looks and acts like a president in public.
Someone should have been there.

From what I have heard over the years, both Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are very much respected and admired in most of the world, and Bill Clinton personally knows most of the European leaders. And Bill Clinton comes over as just a bit raffish and naughty, which appeals to the French - and most of the rest of Europe, to be truthful! LL

I don't think anyone is, Sabot, I always try to separate normal people from their ghastly governments, everywhere in the world.
Apologies if I said 'American' rather than 'Washington' or the 'Obama admininstration'.

This is true, Bonny. I have seen some American Administrations in my time, but this one is The Pits. They it is who are a disgrace to The US of A. Obama could not have delivered a bigger insult if he had been trying. Which I don't think he was.

On CNN this morning someone said the reason given for no Obama was that it takes time to arrange a Presidential visit. As I remember GW Bush made at least 3 flying visits to the Middle East with no warning and Cameron has done the same. LL

That's nonsense, isn't it? All the other leaders managed to cancel whatever they were doing and get to Paris. I just don't believe NO-ONE from the Obama administration was capable of getting on a plane to France on Saturday.
And it goes with the territory, doesn't it? Crises don't erupt to suit presidential schedules, sometimes leaders have to change their plans.
Holder was even actually in Paris and didn't attend the march. I really can't think of a good reason for the non-attendance by the Obama administration, LL.

'France is our oldest ally,' Obama said during a speech Friday in Tennessee. 'I want the people of France to know that the United States stands with you today, stands with you tomorrow.'
But he wasn't standing in Paris as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas put aside their differences and linked arms.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov made the same unifying gesture in the march down the Place de la Concorde in defiance of the Islamist terror attacks that rocked the city last week.
According to an administration official, President Obama spent part of his Sunday afternoon watching a National Football League game on television. Both games were broadcast hours after the march.
Heads of state from every major European power, including British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, joined French President Francois Hollande.
But the U.S.A. was M.I.A.

Some may remember this:
President de Gaulle didn't hestitate to take the lead of the dignitaries at JFK's funeral, even though half of France and Algeria was trying to assassinate him.
And of course, the US president had just been assassinated.
Strangely, Lee Harvey Oswald forgot to give anyone advance warning so they could change their schedules.
There are times when real leaders have to stand up and be counted, or be damned forever. Even if it does upset their plans to watch sport on TV.
