Explosions and gunfire have been heard after armed police launched a raid on an apartment where the mastermind of the Paris terror attacks was believed to be holed up.

Police say two suspects wanted in connection with the terror in the French capital - a man and a woman who detonated a suicide belt she was wearing - have been killed.

A police official said he believed Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the mastermind of the attacks who was thought to be in Syria, was inside the apartment in the northern suburb of Saint Denis with several other heavily armed suspects.

Five people have been arrested, and five police officers have been slightly injured in the five-hour standoff.


French media has reported a suspect was killed by a police sniper.

Police have said one attacker is still in the apartment, although their identity is unclear.

The siege is ongoing.

he owner of the apartment involved in the Paris siege has insisted he did not know his tenants were terrorists.

Jawad Ben Dow, who was detained by police in Saint Denis during the raid, said he had been asked to accommodate two people for a few days as a favour.

He told BFMTV: "I found out that it's at my house, and that the people are holed up at my flat. I didn't know they were terrorists."

He added: "Someone asked me a favour, I did them a favour.

"Someone asked me to put two people up for three days and I did them a favour, it's normal.

"I don't know where they came from, I don't know anything. If I'd known do you think I'd have done it?"

Personally, yes, I do think he would have done it for his co-religionists. In the aftermath of a terrorist atrocity, two complete strangers turn up at his flat wanting 'a favour' - and he doesn't ask any questions? It's normal?

“Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Shepherd police dog from RAID, has been killed by the terrorists during the ongoing operation,” said a statement by the French national Police, which really broke the hearts of thousands of social media users.


According to French media, the elite forces dog was killed at the very beginning of the operation, which later led to arrests and the deaths of terror suspects.

Users of social media thanked the heroic dog, which had protected officers during the raid.

“This dog certainly had more humanity than these barbarians,” one Twitter user wrote.

Islamic hatred of dogs is well known, and well-documented.

The Isis (Islamic State) jihadist group has been operating a cell from the city of Winterthur, northeast of Zurich, according to a Swiss war correspondent and expert on Syria.

Kurt Pelda, was who was named Swiss journalist of the year in 2014, told local newspaper Der Landbote the terrorist group established the cell around the An’Nur mosque in Winterthur’s Hegi neighbourhood.

“A man from Winterthur became radicalized in the last few months and recently travelled to Syria,” Pelda said.

“We do not know exactly what he has done in Syria but there is every indication it has to do with Isis.”

This follows reports of four other young people travelling from the city to Syria.

Pelda told Der Landbote he believes someone is masterminding the cell from the mosque, “let there be no doubt”.

He added: “There is a whole bunch of preachers and prayer leaders who actively meet in the mosque or outside with young people and trying to radicalize them.”

However, Atef Sahoun, president of the An’Nur Islamic Cultural Association, denied such activity was occurring.

“If we discover radical tendencies in one member then the particular person will be immediately excluded,” he told Der Landbote.

'Excluded'? Phew, strong stuff, that'll learn them! So, where do the wannabee terrorists go after that?
