Re: AFTER BREXIT
One political school of thought goes:
1. Corbyn wants to nail Blair to the wall for the Iraq war.
2. Hence the Blairites desperation to get Corbyn out of office before the report comes out.

TELEGRAPH PULLED ARTICLE CRITICAL OF THERESA MAY AFTER CAMPAIGN PRESSURE
Guido understands that an article by Jonathan Foreman headlined “Theresa May is a great self-promoter, but a terrible Home Secretary” was pulled after pressure from her campaign. It has gone down the memory hole…
Foreman was given various excuses by The Daily Telegraph as to why they had changed their mind and pulled the article. Of course the internet never forgets. Now the story will be read even more widely. It is simply excoriating.
The article was a comprehensive list of her policy failures in office and argued she was better at projecting an image of being a safe pair of hands than actually keeping the country safe. So damaging did May’s campaign think it that they insisted it be removed or the newspaper would suffer consequences after her coronation…
Link to Telegraph piece at, er, link.....

Wasn't sure where exactly to post this, but as Blair is poking his nose into what happens after Brexit, Channel 5 are showing a documentary called 'The Blair Rich Project' on Monday 4 July at - I think - 20.00 UK time. LL

Re: AFTER BREXIT
That is indeed interesting, LL - there's so much going on, it's near impossible to keep track of it all.
Mr Blair's lawyers have claimed he set up the IIP for privacy rather than for tax advantages.
Aye, right.
Since leaving office, Mr Blair has earned tens of millions of pounds via his consultancy firm Tony Blair Associates (TBA).
His clients have included Saudi oil company PetroSaudi, the sovereign wealth fund of Abu Dhabi and the autocratic president of Kazakhstan.
Blair never saw a corrupt dictator he didn't like......

Re: AFTER BREXIT
They're causing utter havoc here, with rail strikes:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-36683683
ScotRail staff are to launch a fresh wave of strikes after talks to resolve a row over driver-only trains broke up.
Members of the RMT union were already due to take strike action over the long-running dispute, but extra dates have now been added.
They include two 48-hour strikes and two 24-hour stoppages, with the first due to start on Sunday.
The RMT described the move as "another round of needless, damaging strikes".
The Scottish government said it had contacted both parties, calling on them to "put their differences to one side and reach an agreement in order to minimise disruption for the public".
ScotRail staff have already staged four walkouts, causing disruption to rail services.
Talks have been taking place to resolve the dispute.
However on Friday, conciliation and arbitration service Acas said discussions between the RMT and ScotRail had adjourned "to allow both sides to consider their positions".
It added: "Our services remain available."
It's all over the presence of guards on the smaller, local trains. As anyone that looks at a map knows, these routes are lifelines to isolated communities - please note, this makes NO difference to the huge Virgin and other trains on the London route.
We've already had overseas tourists stranded on Rannoch Muir when trains failed to turn up; the unions are being complete pains in the ar@e - as usual.
So no, I don't see them as any kind of 'peacemakers'.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
I have a question - a harmless one!
Why does the US media, and others, call MPs and so on 'British lawmakers'? I always have to stop and think who they are talking about, because politicians are never described like that in the UK.
Is it simply because the whole UK system, and the different types and ranks of politicians, can be rather confusing?

Re: AFTER BREXIT
I think it depends on the definition of 'lawmaker'. Wikipedia defines it thus:
Using this I, as a lawyer, am not a lawmaker, It is my job to take the laws set down by the governments, past and present, and interpret them to the best of my ability. I thnk the confusion is mainly due to the vagaries of UK English v US English. Parliaments make the laws of the land, MPs make up those bodies, therefore they are lawmakers. Hope this helps, dear lady. LL
"A legislator (or lawmaker) is a person who writes and passes laws, especially someone who is a member of a legislature. Legislators are usually politicians and are often elected by the people of the state."

Re: AFTER BREXIT
Yes, it does, LL. Maybe US commentators don't realise how much of UK law meanders through committees, the House of Lords - all sorts of people and places, and it's not just MPs that actually make laws?

Re: AFTER BREXIT
From The Latest:
Members of a European trade alliance that Britain helped set up over a half-century ago say they're open to letting the UK back in now it has voted to leave the European Union.
Ministers from the European Free Trade Association met Monday in Bern for a previously planned gathering, but Britain's decision last week to leave the EU loomed large.
At a time when France actively blocked Britain from joining the EU's predecessor, Britain helped create EFTA as an alternative. It left EFTA in 1972 to join the EU, but English remains the official working language of its four current members: Switzerland, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway.
EFTA leaders noted that Britain has many issues to work through, but Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann told reporters that its return would strengthen the association.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
It is very complicated!! There are committes, subcommittees, special meetings, then dicussions, more committees, and on and on it goes. There are rejections, resubmissions, more yacking .... many times a possible law never gets past the committee stage. LLbb1 wrote:Yes, it does, LL.
