Do you have to prop them up? They look as though they will get top heavy.

You may have to, once they really get going, Sabot, you don't want them getting knocked down by wind, or anything.

ETA, I think they must lean on each other in fields?

I am actually planting mine up against fence posts, just in case. We sometimes get terrible storms in August.

That's why they must be good for falling in if you get drunk.

It has rained for two solid days here, and I caught a couple of whopper slugs last night, and a little one half way up a bean stalk. But I don't have nearly as many as I used to, probably due to me chucking them over the wall with monotonous regularity.

I have had a really good crop of Broad Beans from my Twelve Plants, all planted in cut off Parafin containers, back in early December. Much better than ever before, but I did change the type this year. They are Seville Long Pod if anyone is interested. Although this was accidental. I just picked up a packet in passing.
Three plants to a container, and they all survived that horrid frost, so perseverance has finally paid off. And of course, it is one of the few vegetables that you can grow in Winter for an early crop.

I have also had a vague prune at The Wisterias of all those long straggly bits that carry next year's flowers. I shall finish this off come Winter when the leaves fall and I can see what I am doing. But is is quite exciting to know that I am setting the flowers for next year.

All very strange because it is all about patience, for which I am not generally known.

I have had a horticulture-related mishap this evening. I try to grow small herby-type things indoors, on the window ledge. Including chillies...

So, I pulled off a lovely ripe red one, de-seeded it for my salad, chopped it.... Unfortunately, I then rubbed my eye without thinking what I was doing....

Yes, it did bring tears to my eyes..... Sad

Oooops, that looks bad. We are nowhere near a river so we don't get much flooding, though two years ago we had some as the fields were heavily frozen after a very bad freeze and the water that fell couldn't sink into the earth so there were pockets of flood areas. How's things north of the border, bonny? LL

Typical Scots June really, LL. We were dry and sunny, if a bit chilly in the breeze, last week when it was pouring in London. A couple of days rain, and now we've had a couple of non-rainy days, though it's overcast and dull.

Nothing dramatic - fingers crossed.

Just for Sabot - slugs get a look-in in this report on the British non-summer:

Now it's the South West's turn for a soaking as flood warnings are issued ahead of new storm sweeping in from the Atlantic
The Environment Agency is asking people in Devon, Cornwall, West Somerset, North Wales and parts of the Midlands to remain vigilant and prepared for flooding, after the Met Office issued a weather warning for heavy rain
Intense thundery downpours are expected this afternoon and further unsettled weather is predicted for the rest of the week
There are also 21 flood alerts for rivers across England and Wales, meaning that flooding is possible
Britain's washout summer has caused a slimy new problem for farmers - there has been an invasion of millions of crop munching slugs

Gardeners in England are doubtless delighted that their hosepipe ban has finally been lifted. This may be why:

Lapping waters: Felpham Way, in Felpham, Bognor Regis, was underwater today as were any unfortunate cars left parked on it

It's quite pleasant Up North, dry and sunny. Bit of a chilly breeze, but nothing major. I had to get the watering can out earlier.

I have lately taken to going to bed early and getting up at 3 am to catch the little buggers. And I caught a few this early morning, although my Beans are getting a bit beyond Slugs now.
I suppose you all realize that it will start getting dark earlier shortly. Very depressing because we have had practically no Summer at all here so far. And I was basking in 40 degrees this time last year.

Yer, yer. It must be hell. Don't you have Air conditioning? I used to stand in a cold shower in Singapore.
The problem for me is that I have never recovered from always being hot. And having servants helped, of course.

Yes we do have air con, Sabot. However......I went with another lady to look at an apartment. The elevator was not working so we had to walk up a few flights (no air con) in a small stairwell area. Then we went to look at an apartment in another place on the 10th floor.

The smoke detectors in the entire building went off. The elevators were not working, saying FIRE (okay its down) but then the lights went out. The stairs were in a very small, very dark place - all 10 stories.

I wanted to take a shower but the cold water was also hot - as it has been every day for a while...... So, took a cold shower that was too hot. Crying or Very sad

I have to turn on a heater in the bathroom when I have a shower, even at the moment. It's mid June, for Christ's sake. Whatever happened to Global Warming?
