Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
My considered opinion is that it would be best for The EU and Me if Britain Stayed. But best for Britain if they were to Leave. So I am putting Britain's interests before my own interests.
I have suffered some hard times on occasions, mainly because of Exchange Rates, But Britain is still my Home Country, despite the distinct probability that I will never live there again.

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
That's the paradox, Sabot, there are actually two different arguments going on.
1. Is the argument about money, which is generally being carried out at a higher level.
2. Is the argument about immigration and borders - plebs can see the effects of that by stepping out their own front doors in any large city.
I voted in favour of joining the Common Market as a trading bloc; no way am I voting to stay in this bloated, unelected, bullying Eurocracy.
If you ask many of us common types what benefits they've seen from the EU, the answer will be, None. We all managed to go on holiday in Spain, etc., perfectly well before, after all.

Oh, and Merkel's arrogance and stupidity hasn't helped Remain one bit; no-one voted for her to be Empress of Europe, she appointed herself.

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
I can't see any benefit to Britain by Staying In. And believe me, I have tried.
Money? Immigration? Borders? There are none.
At the moment I don't know what will happen to The Pound if Britain leaves, but it's not doing very well at the moment, just on the mere threat. So I suspect that The Pound will plummet. This will not be good for me, but I really don't care. I am so tired of Britain looking like a complete disaster. Where is the pride in who we were? The pride that brought me here and made me able to cope. And that's a paradox, if you like.
The EU, mainly Brussels, has gone raving mad. Fortunately, France ignores most of their shit if it doesn't suit them. Such a pity Britain didn't do the same.
Of course everyone will still go on holiday to Europe, although there were restrictions placed on how much money you could take out of the country, and it wasn't a lot. But if that sort of nonsense happens again then people will just spend their holidays in Britain. Nothing wrong with that.

Spot on - that has an awful lot to do with it.
One of the main reasons people holiday abroad has nothing to do with the EU - it's because British weather is so unpredictable.
I wouldn't worry too much, anyway, Sabot - I will be amazed if Leave manages to win, but if it does, two things are guaranteed.
1. It will take a decade to sort everything out.
2. Merkel and co will make us keep having votes until she and her cronies get the result they want, as they did to Ireland and elsewhere. Or they will simply ignore the vote, as they did to Greece not long ago.

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
I don't think that Angela Merkel is actually a bad person. Just a rather stupid one. But then so is Dave.
The absolute power has got to be removed from Brussels. Who are they, by the way? Who elected them? Why did Britain go along with this? I never voted for an MEP. I don't even know who they are. But then I haven't done ANY voting for a very long time. Long before I came here. Would it have made any difference if I had?
The fact of the matter is that Brussels has no Absolute Right to forcibly impose anything on anybody.
For twelve years now, I have ignored any demands to do something about my Septic Tank. It works, it doesn't affect The Water Table, it never smells bad, it never floods, and there is nothing wrong with it.
Okay, it is about fifty years old by now. But they did know what they were doing in those days. But they want me to spend 10,000 Euros and totally destroy my garden, for what?
Take me to Court. And then let's try The ECHR.
And while we are there, let's see if they can stop The French from striking and generally causing mayhem when they get a bit pissed off.
Everybody I know supports the strikes. The Peasants Rule, Okay.
Just as a matter of interest, my silly, sister who lives in Wales, was forced to employ a registered company to suck out her septic tank once a year, at the costs of 200 Pounds a time.
I pay a local farmer 30 Euros to empty mine, about every four or five years, whether it needs it or not. Which it mostly doesn't. If you all knew as much about Septic Tanks as I do, then you would know why.
The farmer then sprays it on his fields. The only requirement being that he leaves the fields fallow for six months. There is nothing illegal in what he does. Try taking him to Court.
Sorry about the diatribe. It has been a bit of a worry to me. But the more I see then the better I know how very little power these Bureaucrats actually have.

There is no problem with The EU in France. No one takes any notice. The only problem was ever with Britain.

And the games begin...
http://news.sky.com/story/1708699/extension-urged-as-eu-voter-website-crashes
MPs have called for an extension to EU referendum voter registration after "unprecedented demand" caused the website to crash.
More than half a million people registered to vote on Tuesday, with just over two weeks to go until Britain decides whether to stay in the European Union or go it alone on 23 June.
Traffic to the Government's voter website peaked at around 10.15pm, with more than 50,000 people on the registration page - but many were left disappointed after the service failed during a last-minute rush to sign up...etc.
What kind of halfwit leaves it to the very last minute to register to vote online? Do these stupid people even actually exist? Or is this a new twist on the 'postal votes' scam?

Around 132,000 of the people who registered on Tuesday were aged under 25, compared to around 13,000 from the 65 to 74-year-old age group.

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
Student Jordan Parker, 20, said he began trying to register from 10pm but the website had timed out after he entered his details. After 50 minutes he still had not been able to register.
He said: "It is annoying. They can't get anything right, can they? This is a massive vote for my generation, the website going down will affect more young people I would expect.
"They have got to extend the deadline."
No, 'they' don't, you entitled half-wit - you've had MONTHS to register. It's no-one's fault but your own.

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
I didn't use the online site, I used the good old-fashioned telephone landline to the area I used to live in, Westminster. i was helped by a very nice lady who passed me onto an equally pleasant young man who took my name and address etc; within 2 days I was in receipt of the application form which I posted back the same day. 7 days later my postal form and instructions arrived, was filled in and winging its way back to my electoral district office. A total of less than 2 weeks - maybe I am more savvy because I prefer person to person contact to an impersonal website? LL

Also, you take voting rather more seriously than a bunch of idiots who doubtless have NO problem posting selfies or pictures of their food instantly, but are incapable of registering to vote in good time?
Why the HELL should other people be inconvenienced because they were too busy posting snark on Reddit, or looking at porn on their Tinder app?

Normally i don't vote since I moved from the UK but this vote is, in my view, very important. I am eligible to vote in Austria and usually do so there. LLbb1 wrote:Also, you take voting rather more seriously than a bunch of idiots ....

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
I registered online months ago, LL - it really isn't rocket science. Any 'student' that left it to the very last minute is too stupid to be at college, and can look forward to a future career spent flipping burgers.
My only complaint about online registration is that my local authority was operating a system that acknowledged your application, and that was it....they only got back to you if they had any queries. Which they didn't in my case, but it is a slight flaw as I couldn't be 100% sure I'd been put on the up to date register.
I've had my polling card for weeks - and these clowns couldn't be ar@ed to register earlier?
Yes, it is important, whatever one's views - maybe this is a way of weeding out stupid people from the electorate?

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
Stupidity is NOT a requisite for disenfranchising voters. If they miss out then that's their punishment, imagine a rabid Laborite's reaction to the fact that his and others' votes might be the cause of the UKIP getting into power? Brits are notorious for leaving things like voting etc to the last minute - maybe enforced voting with fines for disobeying might be worth the UK government considering imposing on the electorate? Just thinkin'. LL.... this is a way of weeding out stupid people from the electorate?

What, like Jeremy Corbyn, who is now in full shriek about this? And assorted other political clowns who have jumped on the Outrage! bandwagon?
What is it they expect to happen? They cannot keep on extending online registration - registers have to be printed, etc.
It's not as if the referendum somehow sneaked up on them, after all....

The move to extend the deadline after a website crash could allow thousands of people who thought they had missed out to vote.
Sheer genius! Tell the entire world that, if you want to screw with British elections, all you have to do is DDOS the voting registration site!
All because Generation Special Snowflake were too stupid, or self-absorbed, to notice there was going to be a referendum.
This is banana republic stuff, IMO.

http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/politics/politics-headlines/man-secretly-glad-hes-missed-eu-vote-registration-deadline-20160608109410
A MAN who missed the deadline to register for the EU referendum last night is secretly relieved that it is no longer his problem.
Tom Logan attempted to register, following a day of reminders from colleagues and social media, at 11.48pm yesterday but found the website had crashed.
He said: “I suppose that’s it then. No point watching debates or reading up on the facts or arguing with my uncle about foreigners taking all the jobs.
“If anyone brings the EU up, I’ll have to explain I couldn’t register and that being locked out of the democratic process is very painful for me so can we change the subject to football or superhero films.
“Whether we leave or stay, it’s not my fault. And I no longer have any reason to acknowledge that Nigel Farage even exists. In fact I’m going to actively pretend that he doesn’t.”
Logan said to calls for the deadline to be extended were unfair, adding: “Me, and those like me, have had our chance.
“You go on and decide Britain’s future without us. We’ll stay here, ready to lay blame.”

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3630320/Voter-registration-website-CRASHES-just-two-hours-referendum-deadline-prompting-claims-extended.html
However, Mr Jenkin, chair of the Commons public administration committee, warned that pushing the deadline back could lead to judicial review of the result.
'It is probably legal to keep the site open for a short period, a few hours,' he said. 'But any idea of rewriting the rules in a substantial way would be complete madness and make this country look like an absolute shambles.'
He added: 'We are on the cusp of legality here. We are now outside the legal framework by keeping the registration open today.
'If they were to extend the registration for a period longer than this, they are really opening the possibility of a judicial review of the result if it is very close and people feel they have got a cause.'

From The Guardian: Can I still register to vote?
If you are reading this before midnight on Thursday June 9, the answer is yes. People attempting to register to vote in the EU referendum complained that the government website crashed in the hours running up to the original Tuesday night deadline. Strong cross-party support for extending the registration period came from MPs including Yvette Cooper, Tim Farron and Jeremy Corbyn, and after discussion with the Electoral Commission, it was decided on Wednesday that secondary legislation would be introduced to extend the deadline.
