Virgin Casts Doubt On Jeremy Corbyn's Packed Train Claim
The train company's images appear to show him walking past empty seats before filming a message about "ram-packed carriages
Virgin Trains has taken issue with Jeremy Corbyn after he complained in a video about "completely ram-packed" carriages on a service between London and Newcastle.
The Labour leader was travelling on the three-hour Virgin Trains service on 11 August for a leadership hustings in Gateshead.
A video then emerged which showed Mr Corbyn sitting on the floor, reading a newspaper, and saying "this is a problem that many passengers face every day", before calling for public ownership of the railways.
But Virgin Trains has released CCTV images which appear to show him and his team walking past empty seats before the filming began.
Footage from the train operator also shows Mr Corbyn sitting down in an empty seat more than two hours before getting to his destination.
The firm said there were additional empty seats on the train which were reserved but not taken, meaning they were available for other passengers to sit on.
A Virgin Trains spokesman said: "We have to take issue with the idea that Mr Corbyn wasn't able to be seated on the service, as this clearly wasn't the case.
"We'd encourage Jeremy to book ahead next time he travels with us - both to reserve a seat and to ensure he gets our lowest fares - and we look forward to welcoming him on board again."
Billionaire Sir Richard Branson, who co-owns Virgin Trains with Stagecoach, posted a link to the images on his Twitter account.

#traingate latest:
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/aug/23/jeremy-corbyn-virgin-trains-disputes-claim-over-lack-of-seats
]A Labour source said Corbyn’s recollection of why the Labour leader walked past seemingly empty seats, as shown in one CCTV still, was that there were no vacant pairs of seats, and he wanted to sit next to his wife, Laura, for the journey.
The source said when Virgin staff spotted Corbyn sitting in a vestibule they offered him a complimentary upgrade to first class, which he refused. The staff then upgraded a family to first class so Corbyn and his team could sit in their seats.
Other passengers sitting in corridors were also found seats during this period, as Virgin staff moved some people to booked seats which had not been occupied.
Is he married to a child, that his wife is incapable of sitting by herself on a train?

Fascinating. Corby announces he wants to renationalise the raiways and suddenly he's sitting on a floor in a Virgin express train unable to get a seat? Does he think we are as gullible as his adoring, fawning Trotskyites? Pull the other leg, it's got bells on!!!! Lamplighter

The silly fool surely didn't realise that Virgin has CCTV. Oh, and it turns out that the female who was trotted out to agree with him is a Momentum activist. You couldn't make it up.
Oh wait, they did.
Oh wait, they did.

“We’ve got to get two million people who actually voted Tory, 12 months ago, to vote Labour, in 106 seats. And what you won’t get from me, is some, you know, lunatic at the top of the Labour Party, you’ll have someone who tries to form a coherent narrative about what’s wrong with Britain.”

Carry On Up The East Coast
Virgin East Coast users would scoff at Jeremy Corbyn’s claims of overcrowding
Yes, there are serious problems with overcrowding on commuter trains, but the 11am from London King’s Cross to Newcastle customarily carries a grand total of zero commuters
Indeed, it is difficult to think of a less appropriate departure on which to pull a stunt like “Floorgate” than the 11am from King’s Cross - or the Hogwash Express, I shall call it.

Re: Anti-Corbyn coup fails - so far!
That hadn't dawned on me, LL - why on EARTH would people be commuting from London to Newcastle at 11am?
I have actually just checked the timetable, and that appears to be one of the Virgin trains that heads on to Scotland. I can assure you, those trains are HUGE. Also, anyone with a grain of sense books online.

Re: Anti-Corbyn coup fails - so far!
I have done that journey many times, ie from London to Scotland. I would point out that any reserved seats that are not taken within 5 minutes of the train leaving each station have the reservation tickets removed so that anyone can use the unwanted seats. LL

Exactly, LL. Also, suppose you are travelling from London to Newcastle, and you see a seat reserved from Newcastle to Aberdeen - then of course it's OK to use it.
Corbyn is a liar and an incompetent fool. IMO, of course.

Usually, as I remember, reservations tickets were removed from seats once they were occupied by the seat holder.bb1 wrote:Exactly, LL. Also, suppose you are travelling from London to Newcastle, and you see a seat reserved from Newcastle to Aberdeen - then of course it's OK to use it.

Can I reserve a seat?
Yes, you can reserve a seat on all East Coast services, unless all the reservable seats are booked already. If you book an Advance or First Class ticket, you'll automatically have a seat reserved, and you can use our Seat Picker to change which seat, if you like. Reservations are available with all types of ticket.
Season ticket holders can reserve a seat for free. Once you’ve picked a seat, print the details to carry with your ticket. You can check on your reservation by logging into the My Account pages of this site.
You’re only able to make one seat reservation per single journey and bear in mind that when our trains are busy a ticket without a reservation won’t guarantee you a seat. Most of the time, you’ll be able to board a train without a reservation if you have an open ticket, but there can be exceptions on very busy days like Christmas or Bank Holidays.
You can pick your favourite seat using our VTEC train seat maps on the desktop version of the VTEC website. You’ll also be able to see the seat map when booking a ticket. Don’t worry if you're indecisive, you can always go back and change your seat later.
I do not understand why Corbyn did not reserve a seat, he is well paid as an MP. LLA former Labour transport spokesman last night accused Mr Corbyn of “bizarre antics” in the latest skirmish of Labour’s bitter civil war.
Michael Dugher MP, who was sacked by Mr Corbyn last year, said: “Many of us campaigned hard for big changes to our railways to help long-suffering passengers, including more public control. Jeremy does rather appear to have undermined our case by his latest bizarre antics. The bigger problem for Labour though is that the voters can spot a bullshitter a mile away.”

I prefer politicians who will happily sit on trains and enjoy themselves #TrainGate
See, that's the difference between them. Portillo not only enjoys himself on trains, he makes money out of it, and by encouraging other people to use trains, see new places, etc., he increases trade and makes money for other people, too.
Stupid old beardy lefties just whine and moan.

Portillo is far easier on the eye, clean shaven, casual but neat - as different from Corbyn the professional scruff, unshaven, rumpled clothing and probably whiffy to boot, as chalk from cheese. LL
