Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
I would reckon that's perfectly possible, Lily. And as for those of us further down the food chain - always remember, it was the Black Death that did the most to end the feudal system..
Because anyone that survived it became a valuable labourer, not a mere peasant.

However the vote goes, that scumbag will make money from it.

Thing is, that with referendums, etc., conventional wisdom states that the status quo wins, Lily. What makes this different is that leaving the EU is restoring the status quo. It's somewhat irritating to see Remain trying to brainwash young people into thinking that life without the EU is impossible.

I wonder, could Remain please find some poor people who want to stay in? All I've seen is a procession of lefty luvvies, currency speculators, champagne socialists, corrupt politicians, and the likes of Toynbee, worried for the future of their Tuscan villas.

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
The EU Parliament itself is to blame for a lot of the dissent, with it's hideous gravy train. If only they had been reined in and cut the dictating.
Who wants to be ordered about by a bunch of champagne swilling morons who have no idea of how the common man survives.
The power went to their heads decades ago. It's not for them to worry about how I am going to afford 5,000 Euros for a new septic tank on my 600 Euros a month pension. There is nothing wrong with the old one, thank you very much. It works just fine.

See, you too are one of the plebs, Sabot - the EU isn't for the likes of you and me. The EU simply doesn't care about the little people. Oh, they talk down to us, patronise us, tell us they know what's best for us, but actually care? No, not for an instant.

I doubt if people in the West Country have forgotten this:

Flooding: Somerset Levels disaster is being driven by EU policy
EU directives actually require certain plains to become flooded
Quote:
It was in that year that Baroness Young explained in an interview that creating wildlife habitats could be very expensive, but that by far the cheapest way was simply to allow natural flooding. As she gaily put it: “Just add water.” Around this time she was heard to say of the Somerset Levels that she would like to see “a limpet mine attached to every pumping station”.

Soros Warns Of Brexit Threat To Sterling
Billionaire investor George Soros says there will be "serious consequences" for jobs and finances if the UK leaves the EU.
Not to him, though - filthy, corrupt, bloodthirsty piece of sh*t.
Developing his argument, Mr Soros observes that what happened in 1992 helped the economy: "That devaluation was healthy because the government was relieved of its obligation to 'defend' an overvalued pound with damagingly high interest rates."
Well, it certainly helped his economy - didn't do much for the ordinary British people who had to foot the bill, though. Scumbag.

The PM said "future generations" would be "hit hardest" by a vote to leave, adding such a decision would be "irreversible".
Mr Cameron said: "For you, for your family, for the future of our country, vote Remain."
Yes, because 50% youth unemployment, and Merkel's EU army is soooo much for young people to look forward to.

Corbyn: We Are Ready For Snap General Election
Jeremy Corbyn says he is ready for a General Election battle if a snap vote is called amid the fall-out from the EU referendum.
NOOOOOOOO!
North of the Border, since September 2014, we've had:
1. The independence referendum.
2. The UK general election.
3. The Holyrood election.
And now the EU vote.....
People have been fighting and arguing here for the last two years, nothing else is getting done, other matters are being neglected because of this endless bunfight.
For the love of God, not a General Election to finish things off!

Re: EU referendum set for June 23rd
I came from nothing and know the other side to life.
I see both sides of the leave/remain issue. I know the greed side from some and the desperation side of others. One thing that people who know me will say is that I am not a snob. I don't want to be. I prefer compassion.
I hope with all my heart that LEAVE wins.

As an investor, an entrepreneur, a father & grandfather, I urge the UK to #VoteRemain http://virg.in/EUr
~said the billionaire, from his home in non-EU Switzerland. Or is it the Bahamas at this time of year? It's certainly nowhere like Newcastle or Bradford.

http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/14570729.Sturgeon_opens_door_to_post_Brexit___39_discussions__39__over_Scotland_adopting_euro/
NICOLA Sturgeon has opened the door to the possibility of Scotland adopting the euro if a new independence referendum is triggered by Thursday's EU vote.
The First Minister, speaking after her senior MP Joanna Cherry claimed that a long-standing SNP commitment to retaining the pound could be ditched, indicated that she would be willing to discuss the possibility of joining the European single currency should Scotland be dragged out of the bloc against its will.
While pointing out that using the euro is not SNP policy currently, Ms Sturgeon said: "These are decisions and discussions that, yes, we will have if we are in the scenario of a Brexit".
It follows Ms Cherry claiming that Scotland may no longer want to use sterling should its value plummet if the UK votes to leave this week. Asked about whether an independent Scotland would use the euro in a BBC debate on Monday evening, the SNP's justice and home affairs spokeswoman at Westminster said it would depend on "situations pertaining at the time," adding: "We probably wouldn't want to be tied to the pound if it nosedived after a Brexit."
...more insanity at link.
If anyone wonders why I left the SNP - that delusional pish explains everything. They've lost the plot, I swear it.

I realise my views will probably be unpopular here, but no problem.
There is a problem in Europe, but this is not specifically to do with the EU.
You are quite right that there is a very serious youth unemployment problem in Europe. This is worse in what can be loosely termed the ClubMed economies, whist some of the northern European countries unemployment rates are in the 5+ region. Which is low.
There is economic imbalance between countries. Some countries are economically successful (tending to northern European) , some are less so (tending to southern Europe).
The EU has adopted a blunt instrument (the Euro) as a way of eliminiating a facilitating trade between member countries.
It has allowed countries freedom to redress some of the imbalance by different tax rates.
The most important measure is free movement of labour and capital between countries - this allows those who are unemployed in one country the right to move to another county in search of work - without restriction.
It allows capital to move - and thus bring work to those countries without it. An example is car factories moving to Hungary and Romania.
Eventually (and painfully) things will find their own level.
The USA is a reasonable model - some states are more economically successful than others, some have higher unemployment, some have better weather and are better for retirees etc etc. US citizens have the right to move, live and travel freely between states. It has taken a long time and a very painful transition to reach this position, but overall most would agree it works. Is that right Lily?
So eventually the same may / will happen to Europe. There are of course unique challenges - language, more marked cultural differences etc. But the principle remains the same.
I would hate to see the UK leave the EU, and damage its financial prospects on the grounds of concerns over immigration.
For a personal point of view, I will accept with good grace whatever my fellow citizens decide in a democratic vote, and move forward in a positive way.
But I just feel that doing it together with our European partners, and maintaining our hospitality and tolerance, is a better way. So I shall, possibly uniquely in this neck of the internet, be voting to Remain.
