Germany split on EU's future as some call for a European government

While Angela Merkel’s party wants stability after the Brexit vote, others debate whether the EU should now become more political

Haven't 'European governments' run by Germany been tried already? Didn't end too well? Oh wait, I know, this will be a fluffy, cuddly, Ode To Joy 'European government' run by Germany. It'll be different this time........

Attorney General: No Scottish veto over Brexit

Scotland does not have a "veto" over Brexit and the whole of the UK will be leaving the EU, the UK government's attorney general has said.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has suggested Scotland could stay in the EU and the UK, with SNP MPs asking if "remain means remain" for Scotland.
Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "willing to listen to options".
But Attorney General Jeremy Wright underlined that Holyrood has no "veto" and said "all of the UK" would leave.
Scottish voters backed remaining in the EU by a margin of 62% to 38% in June's referendum, while the UK as a whole voted by 52% to 48% to leave.
The Scottish government has set up an expert group to study Scotland's options for retaining links with the EU, with all options including a second independence referendum "on the table".
During a question session at Westminster, Mr Wright, the chief legal advisor to the UK government, was questioned by SNP MPs on whether Scotland should be allowed to remain in the EU while the UK leaves, and on whether Holyrood could wield a "veto".
'Held to ransom'
Glasgow Central MP Alison Thewliss then queried whether the government had the legal authority to trigger Article 50, the formal process of leaving the EU, without the legislative consent of devolved administrations like Holyrood.
Mr Wright said: "I think it is perfectly right that all parts of the UK including the governments of the devolved administrations should be able to participate in the process of developing the UK's approach to these negotiations.

"But this does not mean that any of the parts of the UK have a veto over this process - so consultation most certainly, but veto I'm afraid not."
The attorney general also insisted that "all of the UK" will be leaving the EU.
David Nuttall, the Conservative MP for Bury North, had voiced his concerns that the UK could be "held to ransom by the Scottish nationalists".
Mr Wright replied: "I think the prime minister has been clear that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union, and that means all of the United Kingdom.
"But I think it's very important that in the process of leaving the EU, all parts of the UK have the opportunity to contribute to the negotiations that we will engage in, and that is the spirit in which the UK government will approach this process."
At her first session of questions to the prime minister on Wednesday, Ms May told the leader of the SNP group at Westminster, Angus Robertson, that "some of the ideas being put forward are impracticable, but I am willing to listen to options".

Blame Corbyn. Or Brexit. Or - is it thundery where you are, Sabot? Along with several family members, I had a whopper of a sore head yesterday, until the air cleared.

If not, just blame Corbyn.

Robin Dominic is seriously doing my head in, And there is a distinct possibility that I might commit Infanticide some time soon.

God, these over privileged children sometimes defeat me.

Meanwhile, back at the Office de Cadastre. {Land Registry} they suddenly want to know the squared metres of every room that I own, despite not being even remotely interested for 23 years.
I can do this. It ain't difficult. Times whatever. But who needs it?

So I took to the the bottle. Robin Dominic passed out long before I am looking even remotely likely to.

No bloody balls. So much have I done for the rotten little horror stories that I failed to teach them how to hold their drink. This is a bad one, but it's too bloody late now.

IMF's Lagarde to face trial over payout court confirms

The head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, will stand trial over a state payout to the French tycoon Bernard Tapie, an appeals court has ruled.
She is charged with negligence over the award to Mr Tapie of €404m ($445m; £339m) in 2008 when she was France's economy minister.
Ms Lagarde had appealed against a lower court ruling from December.
She is now expected to appear before a special court for government ministers.
The case stems from Mr Tapie's sale of his majority stake in the sports equipment company, Adidas, which was handled by the state-owned bank, Credit Lyonnais.
The businessman sued for compensation after claiming he was defrauded by the bank and received too little from the sale in 1993.

AFTER BREXIT - Page 8 Empty BORIS THE DIPLOMAT ARRIVES AT THE UN

Post  Lamplighter Sat Jul 23, 2016 7:59 am

UK's Johnson says Britain wants greater role on global stage

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson who led the campaign to leave the European Union said Friday he came to the United Nations to show that far from withdrawing into isolationism the United Kingdom wants to play a greater role on the world stage.

The former mayor of London and journalist who prides himself on provocation responded with uncustomary diplomacy when asked whether his philosophy and Britain's EU exit vote bore any similarities to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's nomination acceptance speech announcement that "Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo."

Johnson said it would be wrong to meddle in American politics or the presidential election and the UK government will work with whoever is elected — "but I would draw a very, very strong contrast between 'Brexit' and any kind of isolationism."

On the contrary, Johnson said, one of the main purposes he came to New York and the United Nations was to show that "Brexit means us being more outward looking, more engaged, more energetic, more enthusiastic and committed on the world stage than ever before."

In a whirlwind day in New York, he met with corporate executives and business journalists and had meetings to discuss a UK initiative to counter propaganda by the Islamic State extremist group in social media and on the Internet.

Johnson then came to U.N. headquarters where he sat in Britain's seat at the U.N. Security Council and voted with the 14 other members to approve a British-drafted resolution calling on the international community to help Libya dispose of its last stocks of chemical weapons precursors. He met Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, spoke briefly to U.N. media, and then went to a reception for council ambassadors and others hosted by the British ambassador.

Johnson said he and Ban talked about Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and Somalia, "all countries in which the United Kingdom is playing a leading role in trying to bring solutions whether through diplomacy or politically or peacekeeping." He said they both strongly agree that tackling radicalization and extremism must remain at the forefront of the U.N.'s activities.

Britain is a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, along with the United States. Russia, China and France, which gives it a powerful position on international issues. "It was very much Ban Ki-moon's wish that the United Kingdom should play an ever greater role through the U.N. and be at the foreront of world affairs and showing leadership," Johnson said. "I was very glad to reaffirm our determination to work with the U.N. to deliver that."

Johnson stressed that leaving the EU doesn't mean leaving Europe. "We are going to be more committed than ever before to cooperation and participation and support for other European countries whether through defense policy coordination or foreign policy or counter-terrorism ... or intelligence sharing in which the UK is a superpower," he said.

Johnson said he has "absolutely no doubt" that a balance between British access to the EU's single market and entry to the UK can be struck, noting that this will be discussed in the next few weeks. "Be in no doubt that this is something where everybody wishes to make fast progress in the economic interest of both of Britain and the European Union," he said, "and I think there is very much a deal there to be done and the faster we can get on to do it the better."

Johnson told business journalists it's in the interests of "our friends" to keep an open relationship. "We buy a hell of a lot of French wine," he said. Johnson was on the hot seat after his appointment by new Prime Minister Theresa May about past criticism of the U.S., Russian and Turkish leaders, among others, but that has died down.

As he left the U.N. media, he said, "I hugely enjoyed my first week as a diplomat."
