Three huge businesses have announced further investments in the space of 24 hours – in some cases contrary to what their officials claimed prior to the referendum vote. Global pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline has announced £275 million of fresh investment, London’s City Airport is getting a £344 million expansion, and Deutsche Börse’s shareholders overwhelmingly approved its merger with the London Stock Exchange. A vote endorsing London as the enduring financial capital of the world post-Brexit…
All three firms contributed to Project Fear. GSK CEO Sir Andrew Witty signed a letter to the Observer in May that claimed “Leaving the EU would bring added complexity and uncertainty, which is bad for business and research.” London City Airport’s CEO Declan Collier claimed Brexit would “undermine the free flow of trade and travel.” The Financial Times warned of “advisers familiar” with the Stock Exchange merger claiming the day after the vote “The deal is dead. The German’s won’t allow it.” Willkommen in Großbritannien!

UK economy grew faster than expected in run-up to EU vote
LONDON (AP) — Britain's economy grew faster than expected in the run-up to the vote to leave the European Union, official figures showed Wednesday — little consolation for a country that is already seeing business activity decline sharply as a result of the referendum's outcome.

Supreme Court rules Named Person scheme breaches human rights

The judges found the scheme is 'incompatible' with children's human rights.
The UK Supreme Court has ruled the Scottish Government's Named Person scheme is "incompatible" with the European Convention of Human Rights.
The scheme was introduced through the Children's and Young People's Act passed by the Scottish Parliament in April 2013 and gained Royal Assent in 2014.
All children in Scotland from birth to their eighteenth birthday were due to be assigned a Named Person from August 31.
Justice of the Supreme Court Lord Hodge delivered the court's verdict.
He said: "We reach two conclusions:
"First, the information-sharing provisions of the 2014 are incompatible with the rights of children, young persons and parents under article eight of the European Convention on Human Rights.
"Secondly, this provisions may in practice result in disproportionate interference with those rights, with limited safeguards available to individuals affected. As presently drafted, they are at risk of placing those tasked with delivering the scheme on the ground in breach of importance regulations protecting privacy and confidentiality".
This is the second piece of legislation passed by the current Scottish Government which has been held up through the courts.
Minimum unit pricing of alcohol has also been found to be incompatible with European law.
Good news - but the crockery will be getting smashed in Bute House this morning.....

https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/politics/holyrood/987069/supreme-court-blocks-totalitarian-named-person-scheme-historic-ruling/
Quote:
Key extracts from the judgement:
“The first thing that a totalitarian regime tries to do is to get at the children, to distance them from the subversive, varied influences of their families, and indoctrinate them in their rulers’ view of the world. Within limits, families must be left to bring up their children in their own way.” [Paragraph 73]
So, it's not going to be compulsory for every home in Scotland to have a framed photie of Wee Nickie above the fireplace after all...for now, at least.
Worth remembering that one child in the 'pilot scheme' areas has already been horribly murdered by his 'parents', and a Named Person (a woman) has been convicted of child sexual abuse.
This scheme also wanted taxi drivers doing school runs to report on what children were saying. And during school holidays, if the 'named person/s' were unavailable, then other state employees were expected to step in.
Like the school janitor. With full access to confidential records.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
Brainwashing and control, LL - seriously. The current SNP is not what it seems, it's not even what it was 10 years ago.
It's infested with left-wing lawyers, career politicians that have never worked a day in their lives, ex-Labour that have jumped ship, and the usual troughers.
This is now a Party rule:
People wonder why there is never the slightest bit of dissent from the useless 50+ in Westminster - there's your answer. Disagree with the leadership, and you're kicked off the gravy train.
All they are interested in - apart from power and money for themselves - is keeping ex-Labour voters in the Central Belt sweet; a lot of the current MPs outwith that area would lose their seats should there be a snap election.
I am not alone in my disillusionment; the place is awash with furious long-time ex-supporters.
Ms Sturgeon makes NO attempt whatsoever to use the many powers Holyrood has efficiently, or to run the country - all she ever does is grandstand and pretend to be a world leader.
The Named Person scheme was never about the wellbeing of children; I know an awful lot of normal, decent families who have been genuinely terrified at the thought of a State snooper in every home in Scotland.

A legal case concerning an Austrian who gained then lost German citizenship might offer hope to British expats concerned about residency rights following the UK's decision to leave the European Union.
Full article at this link. LL.... the European court requires member states to justify any infringement of European Union citizenship rights. The court is clear that the consequences of such a decision for the person concerned need to be taken into account. This is where those who have been living abroad in Europe for years, who have retired there, who have raised their families there, should feel more at ease. The court will not easily allow their European Union citizenship rights to be withdrawn.

Initial Brexit shock is hurting UK - but sparing eurozone
LONDON (AP) — For years, the British government bragged about the country's economic performance, contrasting it with the neighboring eurozone which was struggling with a series of financial crises and stagnation.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
This may help explain the mess being created in Scotland, LL:
https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/politics/holyrood/982462/sturgeon-chastised-former-teacher/
Nicola Sturgeon’s former law lecturer has said the “obedient adulation” of her MSPs has contributed to Scottish legislation being among the worst in Europe.
Alistair Bonnington, a former honorary law professor at Glasgow, launched a stinging attack on the SNP hierarchy’s grip on their members, as well as their failure to grasp the basics of constitutional law.
He said SNP MSPs “slavishly” followed orders, meaning government bills were “afforded obedient adulation, no matter how flawed”.
And he added: “This results in Scotland producing the lowest quality legislation in Europe.
Mr Bonnington, who taught Ms Sturgeon in Glasgow, also argued that the Government had encroached on the independence of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry.
He added: “I seem to have failed to instil in her (Sturgeon) the most basic rules of how the institutions of government work in the free world.
An SNP spokesman responded that Mr Bonnington was “well known for his vitriolic and over the top articles”.
He said: “The SNP has an incredibly strong track record in government – which is why the party was just elected to an unprecedented third term, with the largest electoral mandate in the devolved era.”
Er no, you lost your majority, and now have to govern, when you can be bothered, with the help of the Greens....

That's a pretty good summary of today's f*ck-up; if the Evil Tories had done this, then the useless 50+ would be screaming for resignations.
I hope Anna Raccoon picks up on this, I've seen her comment on it before.
