Re: AFTER BREXIT
But while the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe represented a triumph for the West, Mrs Thatcher feared a resurgent Germany would dominate the Continent.
Mrs Thatcher's misgivings over the reunification ran so deep she even had to be cajoled by aides into issuing a congratulatory statement.
At the Chequers meeting the prime minister expressed concerns over the country's relatively recent past under Nazi control, the Daily Telegraph reported.
Among those who attended was Charles Powell, Mrs Thatcher's longstanding foreign adviser. According to a minute by Mr Powell, which was released today by the National Archive at Kew, west London, questions including 'Have the Germans changed?' and 'Who are the Germans?' were considered.
According to the Daily Telegraph, he wrote that a range of views were discussed and some 'asked how a cultured and cultivated nation had allowed itself to be brain-washed into barbarism. If it had happened once, could it not happen again?
Apprehension about Germany did not relate just to the Nazi period, but to the whole post-Bismarckian era, and inevitably caused deep distrust.'
He added there were 'no serious misgivings' about the then current political leaders but asked whether 'some of the unhappy characteristics of the past' could re-emerge in the future 'with just as destructive consequences?'

Given events since then, Maggie wasn't far wrong, was she? It didn't take long for Ma Merkel to decide she was Empress of Europe and start throwing her considerable weight around.
In a politically-correct, progressive way this time! Perish the thought anyone should liken her to previous bullying Chancellors!
And this time, she invited the barbarians in to trash Europe.

GERMANY AT BOILING POINT: Terror-hit nation sees over 1,000 attacks on migrant camps
DIVISION is spreading through German communities as fresh figures reveal attacks on asylum seekers remain a big problem - despite arrivals slowing down.
All Merkel's doing, as is the civil unrest and terrorism spreading across Europe. IMO, it's only a matter of time before the EU implodes, rather like the Soviet Union.
And that too will be the arrogant, bullying Merkel's fault.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
I hope not, Lily, but I fear it is inevitable, at least in the big European cities with all those 'no go' areas.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
Look what Merkel has done to Germany:
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/748495/Germany-security-armed-police-New-Years-Eve-Berlin-terror-attack-Cologne
That would have been unthinkable ten years ago. It's the same all over Europe - we are supposed to change, to live in fear, because of her party guests.
Sooner or later, something or someone is going to snap and all Hell is going to break loose. Contrary to the beliefs of many, 'European civilisation' is a very thin veneer - as a quick glance at history reveals.
Ironically, the EU under Merkel is causing the very things it was supposed to prevent ever happening again. No, France and Germany aren't going to go to war over the Ruhr, but resentment and real anger is bubbling up all over.
Merkel and co would be well advised to remember the Bourbons.

Re: AFTER BREXIT
I have absolutely NO idea about the significance of the Flouncing Ambassador; Remoaners think it's the end of the world, and Leaver seem quite happy.
Then there's this:
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/749681/EU-ambassador-Sir-Ivan-Rogers-Brexit-row-decade-trade-deal-Foreign-Office-Theresa-May
Nigel Farage backed for top Brussels role after Britain's EU ambassador QUITS
NIGEL FARAGE has been backed for a top diplomatic role following the shock resignation of Britain's ambassador to the European Union (EU).

Brexit leaves UK with ‘WORLD LEADING ECONOMY’ as Bank of England experts are HUMILIATED
ECONOMISTS have been left red-faced after admitting they were wrong in making doom-mongering predictions about the impact of Brexit as Britain ended the year with one of the healthiest economies in the advanced world.
Perhaps the 'experts' should have taken a look at an atlas? They might have noticed that there is a very big world outside the Merkel Empire.
It's a great pity that these particular 'experts' have added to the growing impression that nowadays, 'expert' = someone who will spout whatever nonsense politicians pay them to spout. It doesn't have to bear much resemblance to reality.

Haldane is unfair on Fish. The Met Office in 1987 was victim of a tiny nudge of air deflecting the course of the hurricane north of its expected path over the Atlantic. It had no interest in being wrong, any more than polling science has an interest in getting elections wrong, which it increasingly does.
The Brexit forecast was in a different category. It was like the “dodgy dossier” of the intelligence community on Saddam’s weapons arsenal. It was experts distorted by politics, consciously or unconsciously saying what they or their paymasters wanted to hear. It was “sexed up” science.
The reasons given by economists for their Brexit forecast are feeble. It did not take account of “inherent momentum”, of international factors or of government remedial action. That is surely inadequate. The true reason is that Project Fear, the Treasury-orchestrated attempt to frighten voters into the remain camp, consumed the political and intellectual establishment. It blighted the judgment of social scientists. It not only failed in its purpose of instilling fear, it appeared to validate a bogus reason for voting Brexit – that all experts are mendacious toffs.
This.

UK and USA are WEAK: Angela Merkel calls for German-led EU ARMY to defend Europe
ANGELA Merkel has renewed her call for the European Union to have its own army, warning the bloc will not be able to rely on others to guarantee its security with Donald Trump in the White House and Britain set to leave.
German-led armies 'defending' Europe didn't work out awfully well on a couple of previous occasions....

Re: AFTER BREXIT
You feel like shaking Merkel and co., Lily.
Look, what you're doing isn't working, so stop doubling down on what doesn't work. Step back, forget the political/financial union, be a friendly trading bloc, or the EU is going to collapse like the Soviet Union did.
And the very idea of a German-led EU army will drive even MORE Brits to Brexit.

Yes, Italy looks pretty shaky - or it could be something completely out of the blue that finishes the EU off. I just don't see it surviving, long term.
