The European Parliament's lead negotiators for Brexit talks has warned that discussions with the UK must conclude ahead of MEP election in mid-2019.

The vote was not supported by everyone in the Strasbourg Parliament after it narrowly passed by 369 votes to 255, with 70 abstentions.

And astonishingly it has been agreed that the EU should also be prepared to act autonomously in cases where NATO is not willing to take the lead.

However the EU is celebrating this victory claiming the security situation in and around Europe has worsened significantly in recent years, due to challenges like terrorism, hybrid threats or cyber and energy insecurity.

t says no country is able to tackle defence alone and “solidarity and resilience require the EU to stand and act together”.

European politicians have now guaranteed at least £420m-a-year in funding to set up their new European wide army which will be a "rapid response" team.

They suggest devoting an initial two per cent of the overall GDP to defence, establishing multinational forces and EU headquarters to plan and command crisis management operations, and enabling the EU to act where NATO is unwilling to do so....etc.


That would be the EU army the Remoaners were claiming was a fantasy just a few months ago? I hope Geldof, Clegg, Mrs Smug Rich and the rest of them are volunteering themselves and their children for it?

If not, why not?

Frankly, it's a ridiculous idea, anyway - hard to imagine anything more totally ineffectual than an EU army.

Their children?  They will be nowhere near an army....

Nicola Sturgeon’s Brexit Minister has been caught out making inaccurate claims to Brussels diplomats about the level of Scottish support for the EU and suggestions of non-existent talks with the Spanish government.

Mike Russell used a speech to EU officials to portray Scotland as separate from the rest of the UK, claiming that five million Scots had demonstrated in the EU referendum that “they do not want to give up their European citizenship.”

He also claimed that the only MSPs to vote for Brexit were four Tories and, pressed specifically about whether talks were taking placed with Spain over a special deal for Scotland, reassured the audience that “we would not be talking in these terms unless we were having conversations.”

But the Tories accused him of attempting to paint “a completely false picture” to a “sympathetic audience”, pointing out that fewer than 1.7 million Scots voted to Remain compared to more than a million who backed Leave.

The Telegraph disclosed that Alex Neil, a former Scottish Government Minister who served in Cabinet with Mr Russell, voted Leave and his allegations that other SNP MSPs have approached him confirming they did the same.

The Spanish Government further undermined Mr Russell’s claims by confirming they had held no talks about a special Brexit deal for Scotland. A senior government source said the EU has been clear there would be no negotiations until the UK triggers Article 50.

Any deal would have to be agreed by all member states, including Spain, which is wary of offering Scotland preferential terms for fear of encouraging its own separatist movements. Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Prime Minister, said in June that Scotland will have to leave the EU with the rest of the UK....etc.

About the only reason I can think of for this insanity is that the whole lot of them are in someone's pocket. Possibly even Soros'.

It could be, Pedro, it certainly doesn't look like a nazi eagle to me. But none of those books have been opened, and they are all history books - one of them is about the death of JFK. There's nothing sinister about books about the Lufftwaffe, military historians have them by the dozen.

And - they are all as immaculate as the day they came out of the bookshop - or from Amazon.

That Mair killed Mrs Cox is undeniable, but I don't think we've heard anything like the true story, and never will, because of the manner in which the trial was conducted.

Unlike most politicians, at least he's entertaining, and he doesn't whinge. And you can't help laughing at his sudden elevation to Britain's Most Important Politician.

If Boris can be Foreign Secretary, I don't see why Nige can't be our US Ambassador, it would liven things up.

I think he would fit into that post quite well.

That aside, I don't think there are actually any legal barriers to Nige being Ambassador, but I think he'd have to get a gong or something first, and he isn't exactly Flavour of the Month in Downing Street right now. Can't think why.....

No-one could be quite as bad as some of the US ambassadors appointed by Obama in return for donations....why there hasn't been an outcry about that, I do not know.

UK ambassadors have generally come up through the Civil Service and Diplomatic Corps, Lily, so aren't quite as tied to the government of the day. It probably goes back, again, to the PM not being the Head of State. Thankfully.

I must admit, when I am reading US progressive sites like Slate, Daily Kos, etc., I do chuckle at the bizarre ideas they have about Europe being a socialist paradise.

1. Europeans are even more argumentative about politics than Americans, IMO and the real Right is rising in Europe.

2. They're not socialist, they are social democracies, which rely on capitalism to function properly.

3. A great many of them are actually parliamentary monarchies......
