EDL leader calls Brevik a 'monster'

The leader of the far-right English Defence League has described the man behind last week's atrocities in Norway as a "horrible monster", saying the group condemned his "disgusting" actions.

When asked about Anders Behring Breivik 's alleged links with the EDL, which have been scrutinised by the media, Stephen Lennon told ITV's Daybreak: "The media are cherry-picking what they want to fit their agenda and demonising our organisation.

"But there is a warning and what happened in Norway is a wake-up call. The fact that so many people are scared - people have to listen to that."

Mr Lennon, 28, added: "What happened in Oslo shows how desperate some people are becoming in Europe. It's a ticking time bomb. If they don't give that frustration and anger a platform as such and a voice - and a way of getting emotion out in a democratic way - it will create monsters like this lunatic."

Mr Lennon said he is in touch with regional EDL leaders to find out whether the gunman had contact with members of the group.

"It could turn out that one of our members met with him but at this point we're not turning anything up," he told the Associated Press.

In a 1,500-page manifesto published online before the attack, Breivik said he planned to surrender to police so he could publicise his extreme nationalist and anti-Muslim views in court and inspire copycat attacks.

It has been revealed that just months before the attack, Breivik hailed the EDL as "a blessing", writing online of how he had visited the UK and wished to attend the organisation's rallies. Anti-fascist group Searchlight said Breivik was in touch with the EDL's Norweigian counterpart, the NDL, and used the pseudonym Sigurd Jorsalfare, after the 12th century King of Norway who led one of the Crusades. The group said he made postings on various EDL forums showing admiration for the group.

Breivik has admitted he was behind the bombing in Oslo which killed eight people and the gun rampage at Utoya Island that left 68 people dead. However, he denies criminal responsibility and has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces.

Norway's domestic intelligence chief Janne Kristiansen said no proof has yet been found to link Breivik to right-wing extremists in the UK. The intelligence chief added that she did not believe the killer was insane, but calculating and evil, and someone who sought the limelight.

Last time I looked, Norway was a democracy?
That is dangerously close to claiming provocation as justification.

Last I heard there was only one of him who was so upset. And he was a Christian who killed Christians.
No logic in that at all.

I live right in the centre of Eureope, and as far as I can see from the TV and thge papers, it is more the economy, people joining/not joining the Euro plus the ongoing Roma saga that is exercising the majority of the people. However, the right wing heree did receive a communication from the killer, mbut has reacted strongly against what happened:

Hungarian far-right leader says group received letter from Anders Breivik before Norway killings

The Hungarian far-right 64 Counties Movement was among the European radical groups which received a letter from Anders Breivik, the suspect of last week’s shooting rampage in Norway, the group’s leader told commercial TV2 on Monday evening.

Laszlo Toroczkai said the electronic letter was sent from Breivik’s personal email address and 64 Counties was the only Hungarian organisation which received it. Toroczkai said Breivik outlined his ideology in the letter, which he only read after the attacks, and that there was no information which could have predicted such an act was going to take place.

He added he did not recall ever meeting Breivik in person.

Toroczkai condemned the double attack which killed at least 76 people last Friday. He said “their ideologies have some common points,” but they firmly condemn the mass murder committed in Norway.

Authorities looking into potential Hungarian links to Norway killings

Hungarian authorities are examining whether last week’s shootings in Norway had any Hungarian connections, Agnes Vadai, head of the parliamentary committee for national security, told Tuesday’s Nepszabadsag.

Vadai, a Socialist, said nothing more is known at the moment about any potential links to Hungarian organisations.

The national police ORFK said it had been collecting information on the case from the start.

The Hungarian far-right 64 Counties Movement was among the European radical groups which had received a letter from Anders Breivik, the suspect of last week’s shooting rampage, which killed at least 76 people. Laszlo Toroczkai, the group’s leader, said the electronic letter was sent from Breivik’s personal email address and 64 Counties was the only Hungarian organisation which received it, and he only read it after the assault. Toroczkai said he never met Breivik and his organisation condemned the attacks, although their ideologies matched in part.

Gabor Vona, leader of the parliamentary radical nationalist Jobbik party, also condemned the shootings and said it was a “crime against humanity” and called for European efforts to prevent others to follow.

Norwegian massacre suspect Anders Breivik may die in prison if found guilty of the horrific killings of 76 people, it has emerged.
In the days following Friday's attacks it was revealed the maximum sentence that could be handed by a court under Norwegian laws for the mass killings was 21 years - equivalent to just three months for each person he killed.
People from across the world turned to internet social networking sites and blogs to express their outrage, with many demanding the law be changed.
But the country's Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg, has said there is legislation that allows them to apply for criminals to be held behind bars for longer.
"Twenty-one years is a long sentence," he told reporters.
"But in addition, we have a system of preventive detention which makes it possible to have people in jail longer if it is deemed necessary to protect society.
