And he did manage to shoot a Muslim - an Afghani refugee who had come to Norway for peace. Happily, Hussein Kazzemi is recovering in hospital despite being shot four times.

It is now being reported that the cowardly a**hole was using 'dum dum' bulletts, which he had acquired illegally.

Met To Probe Far-Right Links Of Norway Suspect

The Metropolitan Police have been asked to help the investigation into a massacre in Norway that left at least 93 people dead and more than 90 wounded.

Scotland Yard's counter terrorism chief, assistant commissioner Cressida Dick, has been requested to supply specialist officers to join a new European task force dedicated to investigating European-wide far right links to a bomb attack in Oslo and a shooting spree on Utoya Island.

Anders Behring Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian man, has admitted carrying out the twin attacks but denies criminal responsibility.

Breivik, who is in police custody, posted a 1,500-page manifesto online before carrying out the killings.

He is believed to have been motivated by extreme right-wing ideology, in particular his hatred of Muslims and anger at Norway's liberal immigration policy.

The request for specialist British officers to aid the Norway investigation has been made by the European law enforcement agency Europol .

It is drafting in senior counter terrorism experts from a number of European countries to work in its headquarters in The Hague.

Rob Wainwright, Europol's director of operations said: "As soon as it happened we opened our operational centre to connect the investigation with an international platform of counter terrorism analysts."

Mr Wainwright admitted the attacks had taken authorities by surprise but denied that was because resources were being channelled into fighting a perceived threat from Islamic extremists.

"It has taken a lot of people by surprise. We've been monitoring the right-wing extremists in Europe for many years.

"There is an active scene but until now there has been a fairly low intensity level of violence."

Mr Wainwright insisted the response from European agencies to the threat of right-wing extremism had been appropriate.

He said five attacks in the last four years had been recorded across Europe and only one arrest of a far right extremist had been made in 2010.

That compared to 180 arrests of suspected Islamic extremists, half of which according to him, had been planning a terrorist attack.

Mr Wainwright added that Friday's attacks in Norway, if proven to be the work of a far-right extremist or group, were out of character.

"The threat of jihadi terrorism is still out there. It is still a real and substantial threat, but of course at the same time we have to monitor other possible terrorist activities.

"Even early this year Europol issued a report warning about some emerging signs that this community was becoming more professional in its work.

"This was mainly on the internet where they were trying to mobilise a greater community, particularly youngsters using the internet in a more tech savvy way."

Security man Trond Berntsen, the son of Princess Mette-Marit's late stepfather, was among the 86 people killed when Anders Behring Breivik opened fire at a youth camp.

An off-duty police officer, Mr Berntsen had been hired to provide private security to the island retreat, and was one of the first killed by the white-supremacist gunman, authorities revealed.

This isn't actually any worse than the rest of the horror. But it does seem so now that individuals are being named. It is becoming so much more personal.

I can still barely express my thought. But this is no Martyr. He is a deranged lunatic who has been plotting this for at least nine years. Why did no one notice?

Norway can lock him up for life. They do have choices. And if they ever let him free then he could go somewhere else and do the same again. He didn't just dream this up on a disgruntled whim. Let that not be on the conscience of Norway.

Oh, and gag him in Court. There is no doubt of his guilt. And I for one don't want to hear his justification.

The maximum sentence is 21 years, sabot, set by Norwegian law. I don't know whether it can be over-ruled by the judge when sentencing; a possible way round would be to sentence him separately for EACH victim, ie a total of 1,953 years, but as far as I know all sentences are served concurrently in Norway, not added together as in the USA to make a grand total of years. As he is due in court very soon today, after the memorial one minute silence, we will then know if he is to be allowed an open trial, or whether the doors will be closed to everyone but the judge etc, ie no press or TV. But The Norwegian System does have an option to increase the sentence by five year periods, one after the other if they think it is not safe to release him.
Personally, I don't care if it will ever be safe. This one is just too much. At least 95 innocent children who never did anything to him. I can't tell you how I feel about him.

I have not supported The Death Penalty since I was old enough to make a reasoned judgement, and I still don't now. My retribution lies in permanent incarceration for some crimes, whether or not the person is likely to be rehabilitated.
Prison is about punishment, and some crimes can never be forgiven. And if he is ever sorry for what he has done then he should want to stay in prison.

Thou Shalt Not Kill innocent children. This is fundamental.

Apparently, the sentence can be increased, if it is decided that the prisoner has unresolved issues, or continues to be a danger to the public.

ETA, I can never make my mind up about the death sentence - I don't think it is a real deterrent, and the idea of the state cold-bloodedly taking life disturbs me.

However, there are some people whose acts have been so evil, they have less right to life, IMO, than a rabid dog, which is why I shed no tears for Bin Laden, and similar.

So, lock this cowardly barsteward away for ever, with no voice - and no martyrdom. Show up his cowardice, smash any illusion there may be that he is some kind of warrior of Christ.

He isn't - he is just a particularly cowardly spree killer, with a mindset similar to Manson.

Breivik to be remanded in custody for 8 weeks. 4 weeks in solitary confinement.

Judge Kim Heger has granted the prosecution's request for Breivik to be detained for eight weeks. He says four weeks of that must be in solitary confinement. He has also placed a ban on letters and visits.

Judge Heger told media that Breivik acknowledged in the court that he had carried out the attacks.

Breivik told the court the objective of the attacks was to produce the greatest possible loss to the Labour Party and give "sharp signal" to the people.

"The court finds it sufficiently proven that the accused acted with intent of terror," the judge continued.

Judge Heger said it would be an "immediate risk" that Breivik would tamper with evidence if he was released.
He added that it was important that the accused could not communicate with anyone therefore he would be put in complete isolation until August 22, 2011.

Charged as a terrorist, 8 weeks remanded in custody, 4 weeks of which are in total isolation, no papers or visits. The custody is in case he tries to destroy evidence, the no visits or papers to stop him trying to influence anyone. He claimed in court there were two more cells in his organisation. Reasons he gave for his actions were to punish for treason and destroy the Labour Party because it allows immigration of Muslims into Norway, and the slaughter of the kids in order to stop recruitment to the Labour Party.

If he was released? WTF. Is The Judge taking the piss? The barsteward killed nearly a hundred people, and everyone saw him do it. Messing about with the evidence is irrelevant.

I am beginning to fear for the rest of Europe if that is the only reason for why The Judge is keeping him in custody. He could be into France before I could say comment est ton pere.

He would not have been released, the judge is, as bonny says, sticking strictly to the letter of the law. There are, I understand, two kinds of pre-trial sentence, one is remanded and the other is remanded in custody, which is for terrorists, which is what he is being charged with. Plain remanded means he would have access to papers, TV, visitors, letters etc, custodial remand means no such access is permitted. I watched the whole conference on Al Jazeera with the judge giving his summatrion; I don't remember anything said about being released, but it was a very long item, being translated by a court official and an Al Jazeera voice over. The judge read out his conclusions in total, as is required by Norwegian law. Could have been in the translation, I suppose, but there was NO way he would be released, he is being tried for the ultimate crime in Norway, terrorism. Norwegian law is very strict, which is why the have one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. LL

Agree, LL - I was trying to watch a voice-over translation on Sky, so may have missed bits.
My personal feeling is that Breivik will be tried strictly by Norwegian law, for a few reasons...

It gives him no wriggle room.

It makes him a common criminal, not a martyr

And it demonstrates to the world that his vile actions have acheived NOTHING - he is not going to disrupt the normal, peaceful and law-abiding Norwegian society in any way.

I suspect that Norway is in a state of shock, but all I have heard so far is about how Liberal they are.

You won't like this, but I wouldn't classify him as a Terrorist. Legally it could be argued that he isn't a Terrorist, but just a crazed psychotic nutter. These people could have a wrongful arrest on their hands if they aren't very careful.

Ah, thanks, LL - yours probably makes more sense, as I was trying to watch/read, several different things.

Only the Devil knows why Breivik thought he would acheive anything; my personal feeling is that - apart from being imprisoned for the rest of his life - the best punishment will be to rub in what a coward he is, just another terrorist and no Aryan hero figure...not that any of them ever are.

I am not trying to be deliberately difficult. I just don't like the way it is going.

He has deliberately destroyed the future of Norway's Labour Party, so he has certainly accomplished something.

Sabot, under Norwegian law he is classed as a terrorist because he bombded Oslo and they have also, apparently found other unexploded devices in the city. He is also a murderer because he killed 93 people. I think the judge is the best person to decide these matters, and the police asked for the charges to be that of terrorism. LL
